Bayer Leverkusen prospect Francis receives loan out to Bochum
The 18-year-old who became Bayer Leverkusen's eighth youngest professional this year will receive a chance to hone his skills in the 2. Bundesliga next season. Germany U18 international Francis Onyeka received a contract extension (through 2028) and loan out to VfL Bochum on Tuesday. Onyeka made two first-team appearances with Leverkusen this season in the DFB Pokal and Champions League. The versatile attacker – who has proven himself capable of playing at the six, eight, and ten positions – won the Fritz Walter Medal as the greatest talent in the DFB's U-17 division after 2023/24 season. He reached the final of the German A-Junior Championship with Leverkusen's U19 team this year. Advertisement 'Francis Onyeka has developed into an outstanding player in Bayer 04's youth ranks in recent years,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes noted in a club statement. 'He will continue to improve in Bochum through regular appearances at a high level. VfL gets a great talent who can then make the step up to a player with excellent opportunities at Bayer 04.' '[Onyeka is] one of the most talented players of his age group in Germany and has had an exceptional season,' Bochum sporting director Dirk Dufner added in his own statement. 'His technical skills and attacking instincts caught our attention, especially as he has already been able to acclimate to a high training level and playing with the pros and has also taken on responsibility as captain of the U19 team.' 'I've always been impressed by the atmosphere [in Bochum],' Onyeka himself said. 'I hope I can convince and get as much playing time as possible. The 2. Bundesliga is physically demanding and it will be a real challenge.' GGFN | Peter Weis

Bayer Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah in advanced talks to join Bayern Munich in free transfer
Jonathan Tah is in advanced talks to join Bayern Munich as a free agent after his Bayer Leverkusen contract expires this summer. The 29-year-old defender confirmed in April that he would leave Leverkusen following the expiration of his contract in June. If the deal is completed, he will sign a three-year deal with Bayern with the option of a further year. Advertisement The Germany international was the subject of an approach from Bayern last summer, but the German side's move did not materialise due to Leverkusen's €30million (£25.7m; $34.1m) asking price. Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been linked with moves for Tah. Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement with the defender over a potential move, while Real Madrid had been offered Tah several months ago but rejected the option of signing him. Bayern had been in the market for a centre-back prior to the news that defender Eric Dier is set to join Monaco as a free agent this summer, as reported by The Athletic. Leverkusen vice-captain Tah has made 401 appearances for the club during ten seasons at the BayArena. He made 48 appearances during Leverkusen's treble-winning campaign of 2023/24, where his side became the first team to complete an entire Bundesliga season without suffering a single defeat. Jonathan Tah! 🖤❤️ — Bayer 04 Leverkusen (@bayer04_en) May 11, 2025 He played in his final Leverkusen home game on Sunday, the 4-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. After the result, he was appreciated by the home faithful and spoke of his feelings ahead of his departure from the club. 'On one side, my heart is crying, while on the other, I'm happy for what's coming,' he told the Bundesliga website. 'I tried to enjoy this moment with the fans today, saying goodbye to all of them. 'I really appreciate the love they have for me and the support they gave me throughout this entire 10 years.' Tah will not be the only departure from Leverkusen this summer. Manager Xabi Alonso announced on May 9 that he will leave the club at the end of the season, with it looking likely that he will replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. Leverkusen, who will end the season in second place, conclude their Bundesliga campaign against Mainz on Saturday.

Xabi Alonso announces Bayer Leverkusen departure
Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso has officially announced his departure from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, concluding a historic reign at the club. The 43-year-old Spaniard, who took the helm in October 2022, is heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. Under Alonso's guidance, Leverkusen achieved historic milestones, most notably clinching their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season without a single defeat - a feat unparalleled in German football history. "I owe great thanks to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, my players and staff, all the employees of the club and last but not least the fantastic fans. Our success was the result of an outstanding team performance." "This club, who showed exceptional trust in me, very much deserved to win the German league title for the first time. My thanks and admiration go to everybody who helped to make this triumph happen including the DFB Pokal win in Berlin. Bayer 04 are ready for the future. The positive path will continue and I will be excited to follow it," said Alonso. The team also secured the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup, completing a remarkable domestic treble. Their unbeaten streak extended to 51 matches across all competitions, setting a new European record before a loss in the Europa League final to Atalanta. The 2024–25 season saw Leverkusen finish second in the Bundesliga, with notable performances including a Supercup victory and a Champions League Round of 16 appearance. "A milestone in the development of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Together with Xavi, we have put together a team that has impressed the whole football world through quality on the pitch and mentality. We are proud of the big steps forward and the standing of the club today and wish Xabi all the best in his future roles. I'm sure our paths will often cross again," said Sporting managing director Simon Rolfes. Alonso's departure, confirmed ahead of the season's final matches, aligns with reports linking him to the managerial position at Real Madrid, where he previously played. While an official announcement is pending, sources suggest he has agreed to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu.
