DCPS bike safety program expands to secondary schools after crashes where students were hurt, killed

It's an update on an initiative to improve the safety of Duval County Public Schools students. In January, Action News Jax reported on the district's launch of a new pedestrian and bicycle safety campaign. It came after a series of crashes, some fatal, involving at least 13 DCPS students. On Wednesday, in St. Johns County, a prayer vigil was held for a sixth-grade boy recovering after crashing his e-bike in St. Johns County on Monday night. The vigil started at 6 p.m. and was held at Plantation Park Turf Field. Monday's incident is just the latest example of the importance of programs like Be Safe Be Seen. Inside ZenCog Bicycle shop in Jacksonville, owner Garfield Cooper maintains around 25 bikes, part of a traveling trailer that teaches young DCPS students bike and pedestrian safety. 'It's super important for me that the bikes are safe enough for my grandchildren, somebody else's grandchildren,' Cooper said. The continuing work to educate and boost student safety is an expansion of the 'Be Safe, Be Seen' program to address the number of students being hit by cars. Albritton said there have been three student fatalities this year, all before February. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] 'The students that were involved in these incidents were secondary students. And so we felt the need to expand that curriculum and that instruction to our middle school and high school students to make sure that we reinforce what we have already taught them in elementary,' Albritton said. Back at the bike shop, Tocknell said there are plans to take this program in motion to other counties and school districts. 'We are very committed to teaching bicycle safety, any opportunity we can get. We hope we can get another trailer to supplement the trailer that the school system has and if it belongs to us, then we can use the trailer in counties besides Duval County, like St. Johns, Clay and Nassau counties,' said Tocknell, who is the President for Pedaling for Safety, and an advocate for bicycle safety. TxDOT launches new pedestrian and bike safety campaign

TEXARKANA, Tx. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Texas Department of Transportation is launching the 'Be Safe. Drive Smart' campaign to combat the rise in pedestrian and cyclist deaths on Texas roads. 'Pedestrians and cyclists are among our most at-risk road users, and too many of them are killed or injured in our communities each year,' said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. 'If everyone looks out for each other and follows the rules of the road, we can help prevent these terrible crashes.' Investigators seek man for alleged drug operation that crossed Texas state line According to the TxDOT, the campaign aims to remind Texans to follow traffic laws and share the road safely with people walking and biking. 'TxDOT's campaign aims to raise awareness among all Texans—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike—of the shared responsibility to help everyone get where they're going safely,' a press release stated. 'To support this goal, the 'Be Safe. Drive Smart' campaign is sending teams of 'walking billboards' around the state to share vital safety messages in crash-prone areas.' Community Update: Green Bay Police Department, Golden House promote ‘Be Safe' campaign

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis and Golden House Development Manager Marissa Heim stopped by the Local Five studio Thursday morning to discuss the 'Be Safe' campaign. Heim says the 'Be Safe' campaign was originally created years ago as an effort to promote local community resources for those experiencing domestic violence. Boy with cancer previously sworn in as honorary deputy in Wisconsin honored during President Trump's address to Congress She adds that anyone who calls the 'Be Safe' number will be rerouted directly to the domestic violence shelter Golden House and can access all of its services. Chief Davis says the Green Bay Police Department got involved with the campaign around right when it started and initially helped promote the campaign with bumper stickers on all of the department's patrol cars. We got involved really because domestic violence is a huge problem in our community. It's something aqll of our officers come into contact with on average more than once per day. Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis With the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaching, Heim says they are doing something unique with the campaign to attempt to use it differently. Instead of being for just domestic violence victims, Heim says they are using the 'Be Safe' to collaborate with all victim service providers to help support those affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking leading up to and during the Draft. We now want to use this as a platform to support the hundreds of thousands of victims or potential victims that might be coming to our area that need resources but might not necessarily know about which agency does what things. Golden House Development Manager Marissa Heim Heim adds that this is a great way to use an already up-and-running campaign to help promote available resources. March Law of the Month has the Wisconsin State Patrol urging drivers to secure trailers and cargo for safety The biggest message from this campaign, as Chief Davis mentions, is that if someone finds themselves in a situation that needs help, there is help and there are a lot of ways to get to that help.
