Man shot in neck by boy's father during custody exchange at Publix: affidavit
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A man is accused of shooting a man in the neck during a custody exchange of an 8-year-old boy at a West Palm Beach Publix. According to an affidavit, 28-year-old Joseph Halford was waiting in the parking lot on Friday for his 8-year-old son to be dropped off by the child's mother, Brittany Ferguson, and her boyfriend, Carlton Matthews. Road rage may have led to shooting at Florida Publix, deputies say Ferguson told officers with the West Palm Beach Police Department that her boyfriend parked their vehicle next to Halford's, and got out to meet Halford, who was already standing next to his car. Halford claimed that the boyfriend used his index and middle finger to make a gun gesture and pressed it into his head. He told officials that he was only there to get his son and not deal with the boyfriend. When the suspect's son, Jacob, got out of the mother's vehicle, he grabbed the child and put him in the back of his car. That's when the boyfriend told him, 'I spared you because of your son,' according to the affidavit. Child finds mother dead in home after ex-husband flees: deputies That's when Halford pulled a semi-automatic 9mm Taurus out from his left armpit and fired a single shot, striking the man in the neck. The affidavit said the gunshot struck the front of his throat and exited the rear of his neck. Meanwhile, Halford claimed the firearm was pointed at his head and chest area and that he did not intend to kill him. Halford's cousin told authorities that he called her, appearing to be 'in a panic,' asking her to come to the Publix. He told her he fired the gun after the boyfriend reached toward his belt line. When police arrived, the victim was found with a gunshot wound and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Halford was arrested on a charge of attempted felony murder with a firearm. He is being held without bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

21-year-old mad at family drives dad's car into ocean, then walks away, Florida cops say
A 21-year-old who was upset with his family borrowed his dad's car and drove it into the ocean, then got out and went to his mom's, Florida authorities said. The dad is now pressing charges, according to an arrest report from the Jacksonville Beach Police Department. The dad told police he had let his son borrow his Subaru, but he never brought it back, according to an arrest report. Instead, the 21-year-old drove to the beach at around 1:15 a.m. on March 26 and put a cinder block on the accelerator to get the car to crash into the water, the son told officers. The cinder block kept hitting the brake, so the man made sure no one was around, got in the driver's seat, turned the lights on and drove the car into the ocean himself, police said. 'While driving, he grinned and wished he could point his middle finger at his father and aunt,' police wrote in the report after interviewing him. He left the Subaru floating in the water for police to find half an hour later as he walked about a mile to his mom's home, officers said. Police said they informed the father what had happened, and he estimated the car was worth about $6,500. The son was charged in Duval County with felony criminal mischief exceeding $1,000 in damage.

17 dogs rescued from hot trailer outside Ormond Beach hotel; owner charged with animal cruelty
The Brief Seventeen dogs were rescued from a sweltering, caged trailer outside an Ormond Beach hotel, with police reviving two limp puppies on the scene. Their owner, Neddrick Thomas, faces 17 felony animal cruelty charges as the Halifax Humane Society provides ongoing care. The courts will determine whether the shelter gains permanent custody of the animals. ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Seventeen dogs, including ten six-week-old puppies, were found caged inside a small trailer in the parking lot of an Ormond Beach hotel on Feb. 3, according to the Ormond Beach Police Department. What we know The Ormond Beach Police Department discovered the animals in distress, severely malnourished and thirsty, with no food or water, and firefighters helped transport them to the Halifax Humane Society for emergency care. Officers reported soiled newspapers lining the bottom of the cages as Ormond Beach Firefighters grabbed the pups and headed to Halifax Humane Society. They had to revive at least two limp puppies on the scene. The temperature inside the trailer was recorded at 98 degrees, authorities said. Animal neglect and abuse cases are not uncommon in Florida, particularly in extreme weather conditions. With temperatures inside the trailer soaring and no ventilation, the dogs faced life-threatening conditions. The owner, 36-year-old Neddrick Thomas, has been charged with 17 counts of felony animal cruelty. The Halifax Humane Society, which frequently handles cases of abuse and neglect, is providing ongoing medical care for the dogs. What we don't know Authorities have not confirmed how long the dogs were in the trailer, though hotel employees estimated about a week. It is unclear whether Thomas had any prior animal cruelty charges or if others were involved in the neglect. The courts will also determine whether Halifax Humane Society will gain permanent custody of the rescued dogs. What they're saying Halifax Humane Society CEO Sean Hawkins expressed frustration over the cruelty of the situation. "Your faith in humanity is questioned daily," Hawkins said. He also emphasized the dire conditions the dogs faced inside the trailer. "In an environment where the air is not moving, they can very quickly suffer from heatstroke and exhaustion. This was a situation that was intentional or was allowed to continue by people, and that's particularly hard." Hawkins assured the public that the dogs are now receiving the care they need. "Our veterinarians were with the pets throughout the night. They received exams and any immediate veterinary care. The pets continue to receive care by our medical team here at the shelter." What's next While the dogs are now safe, their future remains uncertain as the courts decide who will have custody of them.
