Washington baseball blanked by Stanford 2-0 in series opener

Washington baseball blanked by Stanford 2-0 in series opener The Washington Huskies fell to the Stanford Cardinal 2-0 in the opening matchup of a four-game series on the road at Sunken Diamond on Friday afternoon due to the heroics of Stanford third baseman Trevor Haskins and center fielder Charlie Bates. In a game that saw just 10 combined hits, Bates and Haskins had five of them. The third baseman went 2-for 3, led off with a home run against Husky starter Max Banks, drove in Bates with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, and added a double in the third inning. The center fielder went 3-for-3 with three extra-base hits, two triples and a double. Banks took the loss, his first of the season after working 6 innings and letting up 5 hits, 2 runs, and 4 walks with 2 strikeouts while Matt Scott was dominant for the Cardinal. In his second win of the season, Scott allowed just 4 hits and a walk over 6 innings with 10 strikeouts, as the Stanford pitching staff racked up 14 strikeouts in the ballgame. The Cardinal staff kept third baseman Trevor Kole off the basepaths for the first time this season. The senior transfer from Florida Gulf Coast recorded two hits in each of his first three games with the Huskies and was walked three times in Washington's 12-9 win over Saint Joseph's in the final game of the Beach Tournament. The loss dropped coach Eddie Smith's team to 2-3 on the season, while Stanford stayed undefeated and moved to 5-0. The two teams will play the second installment of their four-game set on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. PST.

Washington wins high-scoring affair 12-9 over Saint Joseph's

Washington wins high-scoring affair 12-9 over Saint Joseph's After Saint Joseph's got the better of the Washington Huskies in a 3-0 victory at the Beach Tournament in Conway, South Carolina on Saturday, coach Eddie Smith's team returned the favor with a 12-9 victory in a high-scoring affair in their final game on the East Coast on Monday. Washington's lead got a little shaky in the ninth inning when the pitching staff let up five runs, but the four runs they scored in the top of the inning proved to be enough of a cushion as Josh Emanuels came in to strike out Hawks first baseman Michael Pierson for the save. Third baseman Owen Petrich opened the scoring for the Hawks in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off of starter Bradley Gilbert, who lasted just 2 2/3 innings and allowed 4 hits and 3 runs with a walk and 2 strikeouts. All 3 runs came off the bat of Petrich, who added a two-run in the third inning. But, Gilbert got plenty of support from his lineup. The Huskies took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a double off the bat of catcher Colton Bower, who had a good day at the plate. He went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in the ninth inning to help pad the lead and scored 2 runs. Left fielder Cooper Whitton was another big part of Washington's offensive outburst, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double, 3 RBIs, and a run scored, while first baseman Carsen Taggert went 2-for-3 with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored, and reached twice on walks. Washington's lineup showed great plate discipline and drew 11 walks on the day. Isaac Yeager earned the win for the Huskies after working 2 2/3 innings, allowing 2 hits, a run, and a walk with 3 strikeouts. Nathan Stein took the loss for the Hawks after allowing 5 hits, 4 earned runs, and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings. The Huskies improved to 2-2 on the season and will return to the diamond on Friday at 2:05 p.m. PST in Palo Alto, California, against Rintaro Sasaki and the Stanford Cardinal.
