High school carnival promotes safety ahead of summer
POCONO SUMMIT, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Having fun at the carnival, but also learning about safety. How one local high school gets its students and area first responders together to prioritize being safe in the summer. Walking on a straight line is normally an easy task, but when you're wearing beer goggles, it makes it a bit harder. 'I couldn't see anything at all…Like I was looking at the floor and I thought I was on the line, but I wasn't,' said a freshman at Pocono Mountain West High School, Ronald Christian. The goggles mimic your vision while intoxicated, helping students recognize if they're not seeing straight. You shouldn't get behind the wheel. 'I don't know why people who drink and then decide to drive, when you could just call an Uber,' said Christian. This activity is all part of Pocono Mountain West High School's safety carnival, an annual event put on by the group, SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions. Woman shot by police while allegedly attacking civilian 'It's our first year that we have a BearCat coming this year. All the fire trucks and all the different police vehicles, it's all awesome,' explained the junior Brady Behr of Pocono Mountain West High School. Local law enforcement and first responders attend to show them the ropes. 'We're going to be demonstrating 'Stop the Bleed', CPR, and a lot of just first aid things. What to do in an emergency, how to activate 911, and just sort of training the students on what we do,' explained Austin Schrader, chief operating officer at Pocono Mountain Regional EMS. Leaving an impact, Coolbaugh Township volunteer firefighter Danyyil Rudey says he remembers attending the carnival when he went to school here. 'If a student has the opportunity to go here and come back and teach other people about what they learned, and all the benefits that come with it, it's huge,' said Rudey. How to drive safely is a top priority at the school event. 'This time last year I was just getting my license, and it just helps show all these kids, especially if they're just getting their license, different things that they can avoid and do to make sure that they're good,' said junior Madison Clark. Learning, while also having fun in the sun, before school lets out for summer. 'Looking at the different career paths and learning new safety options and being prepared for life and what could be thrown at you in any time,' said junior Hannah Bossuyt. 'It means a lot to me because I think it's really important to keep everyone safe, and considering I'm friends with a lot of people in S.A.D.D., it's really important we know safety precautions just in case,' explained junior Isabella Pavuk. The student organization tells 28/22 News the event takes all year to plan, and they work to make it bigger and better each year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rosemount: Public invited to tour new $58M Police and Public Works campus
Community members are invited this weekend for a behind-the-scenes look at Rosemount's new multi-million dollar Police and Public Works campus. The 20-acre campus, which cost around $58.2 million and officially opened in December after six years in the making, will be open to the public for tours and a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sunday. Rosemount began considering the development of a new campus in 2018 after a report from the Facilities Task Force found the city's police and public works facilities had 'reached their functional capacity,' according to city documents. Prior to the new campus opening, the city's Public Works Department had to lease storage facilities and operate from multiple locations, as a result of the limited space. At its previous location, the city's police department lacked sufficient workspace for its officers and facilities to address comprehensive wellness needs like physical fitness and mental health support, according to the city. Community members are invited to tour the new Rosemount Police and Public Works campus at 14041 Biscayne Ave., on June 1, 2025. The $58.2 million dual campus nearly quadruples the square footage of both departments. ‘Something that you don't expect to happen': DUI suspect crashes into La Vergne home
LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One La Vergne family got quite the shock when an SUV crashed into their home before backing up and speeding away Saturday night. La Vergne police said the driver did get away, but not for long. A home security camera captured the whole event. Homeowner Ericka Alvarado said they were in shock. La Vergne Police Department adds BearCat tactical vehicle to its fleet 'We saw the glass, concrete — everything on top of us,' Alvarado told News 2. 'My husband looked at me and we were just in shock. We couldn't believe [it] — what is this?' Alvarado and her husband were sitting in their living room when the SUV crashed through their front porch and into the home mere feet from where they had been. 'It was a terrible experience,' Alvarado added. 'Something that you don't expect to happen.' Their son was asleep upstairs. 'It was even worse when we saw the guy trying to get out and making all this noise with the tires,' Alvarado said. 'My son was upstairs and he runs — 'Mom!' And we were like, 'We're okay.'' La Vergne police said that Joaquin Morales Bravo was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Chief Chris Moews said that officers acted quickly to find him after the crash. 'They got a description of the suspect vehicle and within 15 to 20 minutes or so, they found the vehicle driving along Old Nashville Highway and they were able to make a traffic stop,' Moews said. Bravo has been charged with driving under the influence. Additionally, he had warrants out of Smyrna for driving under the influence and evading arrest. ⏩ 'This is a great example of La Vergne officers responding in a timely manner, saturating the area, finding a dangerous person and taking him off our streets,' Moewes said. Alvarado has a message for drivers. 'I just want to make everybody out there conscious,' Alvarado said. 'If you drink, please don't drive. You're not only putting yourself in danger; you're also putting other families in danger, too.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. La Vergne Police Department adds BearCat tactical vehicle to its fleet
LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new tactical vehicle will join the La Vergne Police Department's fleet. The BearCat is a tactical vehicle meant to help protect La Vergne officers and focus on public safety. Authorities said the new tactical vehicle would provide the SWAT team the ability to stay safe on particularly dangerous calls by providing mobile protection. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More Additionally, the BearCat provides the community with reassurance and confidence to show that La Vergne is committed to getting the job done regardless of situations that arise. 'Just the presence of a BearCat — it's an imposing vehicle,' La Vergne Police Chief, Christopher Moewes, said. 'The sight of it on somebody's street can actually be a deterrent to people raising a level of force against our officers or against members of the public.' Moewes said the department has been in the process of trying to get the BearCat added to its fleet since September 2023, but ran into a supply chain issue. He said that about two-thirds of the cost of the tactical equipment was covered by a federal grant the department received. Moewes added that while crime in La Vergne fluctuates, the new BearCat could be useful for certain situations. For example, Moewes described an incident where La Vergne officers had to respond to a subject who had fired multiple rounds in the air. ⏩ 'If we had had this vehicle, it would have provided greater safety for my officers and for the community,' Moewes told News 2. The La Vergne Police Department will perform a live demonstration of the BearCat's capabilities — as well as SWAT and K-9 officer capabilities — at this year's National Night Out, which is on October 7 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
