Input sought on housing pilot in Kanesatake
Following an announcement in November that the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) had secured funding for new social housing, community input is being solicited on plans for a pilot project to build the homes with local labour. 'We want them to be part of the process because it helps buy in,' said MCK chief Amy Beauvais, who is on the housing portfolio. 'It helps them be aware of what's going on every step of the way, so we'll have less likelihood of people saying we had no idea. We don't want that. We don't want people feeling like they're left in the dark. We want them to feel like they're right there with us moving this forward.' The meeting takes place tonight, (Friday, May 23), and will include an overview of the project and a workshop. 'It's a pilot project, so we are proposing that we change from the typical stick homes to rammed earth. We will be identifying the benefits of it,' Beauvais said. When the idea was announced, Beauvais explained the material is durable, energy-efficient, and resistant to fire and mold. 'It's a solution that's been needed because of the housing crisis,' said Beauvais. 'Within that housing crisis there's mold issues and other things that the rammed earth is addressing, that's going to help. I think it's a very logical, viable, feasible solution for the community,' said Beauvais. 'I wish we could build more, but it's got to start somewhere, and I'm hoping it'll gain momentum and people will see how amazing these homes actually are going to be for the community.' The plans resulted in the project being moved to a different funding stream meant to support innovation, according to Beauvais, necessitating a feasibility study that is expected to wrap up around September. 'It's unfortunate, but it also gives us more time to prepare and more time for the schooling aspect to be set up too,' Beauvais said. The proposal includes an intention to bring a skills training certificate (AEP) program to the community that could serve to enhance not only the community's housing stock but also its labour force, according to Beauvais. This could prove useful in the long run if the project were to be replicated year after year, she said. The pilot project is expected to see two to three triplexes built, for a total of six to nine units. A location on MCK-managed land has been selected for these, Beauvais said, but she would not elaborate further. 'It won't be out of place,' she said. Prospective tenants may be asked to put in a certain number of hours into the construction. 'That idea was put forth to give the tenant more of a personal connection with where they're going to be living, so it's not just a house, it's a home,' said Beauvais. Tenants will be selected according to a points system, Beauvais said, which is currently being devised. It could include factors such as how many family members there are, how many children under 18 years old, whether there are disabilities, and other criteria. 'I hope that the community sees it for what I see it as. It's more than just a project. It's more than just housing. This is meant to unite our people again. It's meant to give hope, to show that there is a better tomorrow coming.' The meeting takes place at Ratihén:te High School tonight, May 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pizza and beverages will be offered, and families are welcome. marcus@ Marcus Bankuti, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans rally behind Garcelle Beauvais after dramatic reunion exit
fans have rallied around Garcelle Beauvais in the wake of her exit from the franchise. On Tuesday night, the third and final installment of the season 14 reunion aired on Bravo. Fans saw the season's drama conclude or, in some instances, get drawn out, along with Beauvais's time on the long-running reality show. After announcing her departure from the franchise in March, fans eagerly anticipated the end of the three-part reunion, which teased Beauvais saying 'I'm out' and walking off set without taking the cast photo. But before that, Beauvais — the first full-time Black Housewife on the franchise — raised eyebrows about 10 minutes into Tuesday night's episode when she agreed with a fan's comment that co-star Sutton Stracke 'throws tantrums' when she's 'called out for hypocrisy and bad behavior.' 'I would say sometimes it seems that way, yes,' Beauvais responded, prompting a surprised look from her co-star Erika Jayne. Beauvais and Stracke have been thick as thieves during the last few seasons, often pitted against the rest of the cast on one matter or another. 'It depends on who's pushing her buttons,' Beauvais continued. 'We all have our limits. We all have things that irk us. I'm really pissed right now.' This prompted host Andy Cohen to ask why, but Beauvais shot him down, saying she was pissed about 'all of it, since I've sat here on this couch.' She then told Cohen she didn't want to answer any more questions. When Cohen followed up a few minutes later, noting Beauvais was 'steaming,' she said: 'I don't think I ever get any grace in this group.' She went on to say that none of her castmates smiled at her during the reunion taping. 'I was smiling when I first got here, and then it all changed.' Beauvais remained mostly quiet through the rest of the episode, with the cameras catching her occasional eye roll or scoff at the drama unfolding before her. But then, at the very end, she stood up and walked off when it was time to take the cast photo — a tradition she mentioned wanting to uphold during the first installment of the reunion. Cameras followed Beauvais as she walked to her dressing room. 'Guys, I'm not doing this anymore,' she said as she took her jeweled Yousef Al Jasmi gloves off. 'I don't want cameras here. I'm done. And I never say I don't want cameras. I'm always a team player. But this? There's no team. I'm just so f***ing sick of it. They're all f***ing assholes.' Typically, Housewives run after one another when they storm off upset about something. But in this instance, no one followed Beauvais — not even Stracke, whom Beauvais frequently stuck her neck out for during her time on the show. Instead, the remaining cast members — including Stracke, Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Erika Jayne, Bozoma Saint John, Kathy Richards, and Jennifer Tilly — took the cast photo without her while trying to make sense of her abrupt exit. Fans have been quick to rally around Beauvais, which isn't always the norm for Housewives exiting the show. 'The way Kyle, Dorit, and Erika dismissed Garcelle leaving the set and minimized her feelings is exactly what she has been talking about her entire five years on #RHOBH. It spoke for itself. Good for you Garcelle. Onward and upward,' one fan wrote on X. 'See when Garcelle said 'no one has smiled at me since we started' ... what she was REALLY saying was… no one is giving me any human to human 'I see you' energy. They were closed off & cold to her. They treat her and speak to her VERY differently,' one fan noted. 'Garcelle did everything RIGHT throughout the ENTIRE reunion ... she was honest, she spoke her mind & she took accountability when necessary unlike many. It's was so obvious she saw the rules only apply selectively & she was simply done playing this bs game so good for her,' another viewer shared. 'Garcelle did her job, stayed for the entire reunion, and left when she was done! She does not owe anything to these women that just went after her!' another wrote. Actor-producer-model Beauvais joined the long-running Bravo franchise during 2020's season 10. In her departure announcement, she cited wanting to spend more time with her family, and upcoming producing and acting projects. Just hours before the episode aired, Beauvais shared a straightforward Instagram post about putting herself first that also garnered praise and support from fellow Housewives and fans alike.

Garcelle Beauvais On Why She Quit ‘Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills' Reunion & Refused Cast Photo: 'They're All F***ing A**holes'
Garcelle Beauvais quit The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after five seasons, a decision she made following her storming off the set of the Season 14 reunion. With the conclusion of the three-part reunion, Bravo aired the moment that led to Beauvais storming off the show's set, leaving everyone shocked and surprised. More from Deadline Garcelle Beauvais Storms Off 'RHOBH' Season 14 Reunion In Explosive Trailer: 'I Am Just So F***ing Sick Of It' Bozoma Saint John 'Disappointed' In Garcelle Beauvais For Quitting 'RHOBH': 'I Don't Think It's A High Note' 'The Valley's Kristen Doute On Feeling Vindicated Coming Into Season 2 & Why She's Happy About 'Vanderpump Rules' Reboot The reunion was ending, as usual, with a toast to ending a season and hoping to start things fresh in the next one. However, after a toast, Andy Cohen asked the cast to take a group photo celebrating the end, but Beauvais wasn't going to continue pretending anymore. 'I'm out,' Beauvais said, leaving host Cohen surprised. Dorit Kemsley, who Beauvais clashed with during the reunion, said, 'Garcelle, that's not cool.' 'I don't want to be in the cast photo,' Beauvais said as she walked off the set. 'Garcelle, that's really unprofessional,' Kemsley added. RELATED: Cohen noted that at the beginning of filming the reunion, Beauvais was hopeful that the cast could get a group photo at the end, as they hadn't taken one the previous year. Cameras followed Beauvais to her dressing room, where she said, 'I'm not doing this anymore. I don't want cameras here. I'm done.' In a hot mic moment, Beauvais is heard saying, 'And I never say I don't want cameras. I'm always a team player. But this — there's no team. I'm not doing it anymore. I'm not.' RELATED: On the set, Cohen asked Beauvais' closest friend Sutton Stracke what was going on, to which she said, 'I don't know. She's really unhappy.' Cameras were able to catch Beauvais once again where she aired out her frustration with the situation. 'I'm just so f***ing sick of it. It's like, they're all f***ing a**holes. No one said, 'Oh, I understand what you're saying.' No one said anything,' Beauvais said. During the reunion, Beauvais admitted feeling Kemsley's house invasion was a setup. Bozoma Saint John jumped in, saying it was 'dangerous' for Beauavais to say this. 'I'm always honest, but nobody said, 'Oh, you have accountability.' Everybody jumped on me,' Beuaivais said in her dressing room. 'And I felt I was on an island by myself. I can't be friends with people like that. I don't trust them and they obviously don't trust me.' At the reunion set, Stracke said she didn't really understand why Beauvais was upset. 'I'm done,' Beuvais continued saying. 'It's been an amazing ride. I'm so grateful for the opportunity, but I'm done.' The RHOBH cast took the photo without Beauvais, who left without saying goodbye to her fellow castmates. Stracke would later go to Beauvais' dressing room, but she had already left. Beauvais had been a loyal friend to Stracke throughout their time on the Bravo reality series. The year before, Beauvais left the reunion stage after Stracke had a medical emergency during filming. However, when Beauvais walked off the reunion stage this year, Stracke didn't seem to make the effort to go find her friend to comfort her. Following the reunion filming, Beauvais released a statement saying she was leaving RHOBH to focus on her family and multiple film and television projects. Best of Deadline 'And Just Like That ...' Kathy Hilton, Garcelle Beauvais Attend Christos Garkinos and Etro's Beverly Hills Book Release Dinner Party
'People love a comeback,' said Christos Garkinos. The TV personality — seen in Bravo's 'Dukes of Melrose' and co-owner of L.A.'s famed consignment shop Decades — has reclaimed his life, and he tells the story in his new book 'Covet the Comeback: How a Son of Greek Immigrants Found Success, Lost Everything, Then Built a Fashion Empire,' out now. More from WWD Gai Gherardi, L.A. Eyeworks Cofounder, Dies at 78 EXCLUSIVE: L.A.'s Kinn Studio and Janessa Leoné Collaborate on Fine Jewelry Collection Sephora's 'Next Big Thing' Is a Dermatologist-approved Skin Care Brand 'I've seen the ebbs and flows of his career,' said actress and producer Garcelle Beauvais at his book release dinner party on Tuesday night, held in partnership with Etro inside Spago in Beverly Hills. The two have been friends for 23 years. 'So to see him now launch this amazing network, and the book, it's exciting,' continued Beauvais (who just revealed her exit from 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'). The network she's referring to is the community he's built selling luxury consignment on Instagram Live, recently passing $100 million in sales. 'Not only did he figure it out, he pivoted in a way that now he's created this network where women can be in the carpool lane and they shop, they can be at home and shop. It's become a cult following,' said Beauvais. Garkinos, born and raised in Detroit, moved to L.A. in 1990, working for Disney and Virgin Megastores with Richard Branson, before getting into fashion. With co-owner Cameron Silver, he turned Decades into a retail destination for celebrities and stylists, with carefully curated, in-demand pieces. 'I used to live at the top of Mulholland [Drive]. The whole cliché — the pool, parties galore,' said Garkinos. 'I turned 50 and everything fell apart. I lost everything. I lost my marriage. I lost my sobriety.' His finances had dwindled, and within four months he was living in a one-bedroom a few miles south. 'I would walk out my front door and see my house at the top of the hill.' Then came a chance encounter that changed his life: 'I was down to my last $1,000. Someone asked me to host a dinner in Detroit. I thought, 'How much? Great. I'll go and pay my rent for the next month.'' At the event he met the head of marketing of a Detroit hotel, who took him to breakfast the next day. 'She asked how I was, and I said, 'I'm just trudging my way through life,'' Garkinos continued. 'Trudging is a big A.A. word. She's like, 'Are you sober? So am I. How can I help you?' She literally set me up with all her hotels in these small markets, Omaha, Detroit, Minneapolis, for me to do my truck shows. If I hadn't said that word, I wouldn't be here today.' He began paying off his bills, he said. 'And then COVID happened. I was like, 'Are you kidding me?' I owed so many people money from consignment.' But he acted quickly and took the business online in March 2020, growing through the years. With the book, he's sharing lessons he's learned along the way. 'I've had a lot of pivots in my life, and so I wanted to talk about what to do when those pivots happen. 'You know what, in life, we have to go through some of those times to appreciate the wonderful times,' said Kathy Hilton. 'It happens to everybody.' She, like many in the room — including Beauvais, Selma Blair, Melanie Griffith, Karen Zambos and Monet Mazur (all in Etro) — met Garkinos during his days at Decades. 'He's got such an eye,' Hilton said of his work. 'He is fashion.' 'I think it's about people feeling safe to shop with me,' Garkinos said of his online business. Now 60, he's married to his third husband, Rolland Ryan. 'This book is a love letter to my parents, first, who were Greek immigrants, but secondly, a love letter to Los Angeles and Hollywood and that you can actually rewrite your story,' he added.
