Bhubaneswar: A Nor'wester caused large-scale damage to properties in different districts across the state on Saturday night and caused the death of a woman at Niali block in Cuttack district when a tree fell on her during the thunderstorm.
Sources said the victim, Bebina Sahu (48), was trying to bring her cow to a shelter when a large coconut tree broke under the impact of the strong winds and fell on her. She was rushed to the Niali community health centre, where she was declared brought dead. The cow also died in the incident. Locals demanded compensation and assistance for the bereaved family.
After an official inquiry, compensation will be provided to the family of the deceased, said officials at the
Odisha State Disaster Management Authority
.
The fierce storm uprooted trees, snapped electricity lines and damaged houses and infrastructure in multiple districts. The squall struck with a peak wind speed of 74 km/h in Bhubaneswar, resulting in power outages and traffic disruption in several localities. Panic struck at the ongoing National Women's Business Mela 2.0 as the makeshift tents shook heavily due to the sudden thunderstorm and rain. People started running here and there and took shelter in bamboo shades, while the main gate of the fair collapsed.

A boundary wall collapsed in Phubani due to heavy rain and crushed several vehicles, including a bike, an auto-rickshaw and an SUV. Uprooted trees also caused disruption in electricity supply across the town and surrounding regions. The Nor'wester uprooted several large sized trees and a mobile tower in Boudh, disrupting communication services in the area. Fire service personnel have been deployed to clear the roads.
Manorama Mohanty, the director of IMD's Bhubaneswar centre, said, "The Nor'wester activity is expected to continue over the next couple of days due to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and rising surface temperatures. People are advised to remain alert, especially during afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm intensity is likely to peak."
