Sarah Silverman Opens Up About Horrifying Death in Family

Sarah Silverman's new Netflix special is centered around the deaths of her parents, but Silverman recently revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of another family member. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Silverman said that she only learned the true circumstances of her older brother's death when she was an adult. After making a joke about her brother Jeffrey's death in her 2022 show "Bedwetter," Silverman says her father approached her after the final day of the show's run to make an admission. 'The story was that something happened with the crib, and Jeffrey's little body slid and he got suffocated. But if you look back, there was never a lawsuit with the crib company or anything,' Silverman said. 'My dad says, 'I always felt that he was crying or something, and my dad shook him. He shook him in a rage and killed him.'' Silverman said that the room went quiet and her manager gasped, but that she wasn't shocked by her father's admission about her grandfather. 'As soon as he said it, it was like, 'Of course, that's what happened,'' Silverman said. 'His mother always stood by her husband. She watched him beat the [expletive] out of her son. I couldn't ask my mom, because she was dead.' Silverman noted that her father dropping massive information casually was normal, mentioning a time that he told her he had been assaulted by a school priest while playing poker. "He always said he was the richest man in the world because of his family, and he was," she said about her father in a 2023 Instagram post following his death. The comedian mentioned that her father was her "best pal." Silverman was initially known for a brief stint on "Saturday Night Live" in the mid 1990s before starting her own show on Comedy Central years later. "The Sarah Silverman Program" ran for three seasons, working with Dan Harmon of "Community" and "Rick and Morty" fame. She's also appeared in several films during her career, including Disney's "Wreck-It Ralph" series and the critically acclaimed "I Smile Back." Silverman's newest stand-up special "PostMortem" is out now on Netflix.

Sarah Silverman recalls her dad telling her how he believed the comedian's brother actually died

Sarah Silverman is going public for the first time with the shocking story her father told her about her only brother's death. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the comedian and actor, 54, said she and her siblings grew up believing Jeffrey died as an infant because of a crib accident. All that changed when Silverman's dad, Donald Silverman, told her in 2022 that he believed Jeffrey died after his paternal grandfather, Max, shook him in a violent rage. 'The story was that something happened with the crib, and Jeffrey's little body slid and he got suffocated. But if you look back, there was never a lawsuit with the crib company or anything,' Sarah Silverman told the publication. The former 'Sarah Silverman Program' star said her father told her the truth three years ago after he heard her recount Jeffrey's death in her autobiographical off-Broadway musical 'The Bedwetter,' which was based on her bestselling 2010 memoir of the same name. The elder Silverman came backstage and told his daughter that Jeffrey's grandparents were babysitting him while he and Silverman's mom, Beth, were on vacation. 'My dad says, 'I always felt that he was crying or something, and my dad shook him,'' Silverman recalled. ''He shook him in a rage and killed him.'' 'As soon as he said it, it was like, 'Of course, that's what happened,'' Silverman recalled. 'His mother always stood by her husband. She watched him beat the s--- out of her son. I couldn't ask my mom, because she was dead.' Silverman described her father's childhood as 'heartbreaking' because of her grandfather's abuse. 'His dad beat the s--- out of him every day, just mercilessly. He had a younger brother who wasn't touched. His father made the kids call him Mr. Silverman,' she said. During a 2022 visit to TODAY, Silverman said her 'Bedwetter' musical revisited the challenges of her own childhood — which included struggles with anxiety and bedwetting — and their impact on her parents and her three sisters. 'I'm the youngest so I was kind of the joy. I made my family laugh,' she said, adding that her musical 'takes place in the '80s' when she was 10. 'The Bedwetter,' she added, is about 'a kid who is happy-go-lucky but falls apart, and the family kind of falls apart.' Silverman's new Netflix special, ' Sarah Silverman: PostMortem,' premiering May 20, explores how she's processed the death of her father, her mother and her step-mother, Janice, according to Variety.

Sarah Silverman Shares Shocking Revelation About How Her Brother Died as a Baby

In a new interview, Sarah Silverman opens up about her brother Jeffrey's death — and the shocking revelation her father once shared about what really happened. Silverman, 54, spoke with Rolling Stone about her brother Jeffrey's death, which happened before she was born, when he was 3 months old. 'I'm going to tell you a big bomb,' the comedian said during one point of her Rolling Stone interview, preparing the writer for the shocking news her father Donald Silverman told her after a show in 2022. Silverman told the magazine that her father Donald came to Manhattan to see her perform her autobiographical stage production Bedwetter in 2022, which included a joke about her brother's death in infancy. After the last show, Silverman's father came backstage and spoke with her. Jeffrey died while he was being babysat by Donald's parents, Max and Rose, while Silverman's parents were on vacation. 'The story was that something happened with the crib, and Jeffrey's little body slid and he got suffocated. But if you look back, there was never a lawsuit with the crib company or anything,' Silverman told Rolling Stone. Silverman always thought it was strange that her family never sued the crib company and that no consequence came from Jeffrey's death. But backstage after her show that night, Silverman says she finally learned why. 'My dad says, 'I always felt that he was crying or something, and my dad shook him,'' Silverman recalls to Rolling Stone. ''He shook him in a rage and killed him.'' (Max is deceased.) The I Smile Back star tells the magazine that her manager gasped when her father shared his true feelings about Silverman's brother's death, while the room went 'quiet.''As soon as he said it, it was like, 'Of course, that's what happened,'' Silverman says. 'His mother always stood by her husband. She watched him beat the s--- out of her son. I couldn't ask my mom, because she was dead.' Silverman tells Rolling Stone her dad was always 'dropping bombs' about his life unexpectedly. 'That was my dad,' Silverman says. 'We were playing poker once, and he just dropped in that one of the priests at his school fondled him. I was like 'Dad!'' Silverman's new Netflix special, PostMortem, deals with her parents' deaths. Her mother Beth died in 2015, while her father Donald died in 2023. Silverman has two sisters, Susan and Laura, the latter of whom once played her sister on The Sarah Silverman Project.
