New York Knicks' coaching hunt hits snag as Houston Rockets refuse permission to speak with Ime Udoka

Ime Udoka. Image via: Michael Dwyer/ AP The New York Knicks' search for a new head coach has already hit roadblocks as multiple teams have shut down their efforts to interview top-tier candidates. After surprisingly parting ways with Tom Thibodeau following their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers, the Knicks began exploring replacements. But their list of desired names has been met with firm resistance, especially from the Houston Rockets, who reportedly rejected their formal request to speak with head coach Ime Udoka. Houston Rockets reportedly shut down New York Knicks' approach for Ime Udoka As the New York Knicks move swiftly through their search for a new leader on the sidelines, they set their sights on Ime Udoka. But the Houston Rockets wasted no time in denying them access. According to SNY's Ian Begley, "Knicks formally reached out to Rockets for permission to talk to head coach Ime Udoka and Rockets denied permission, per people familiar with Rockets' stance." Begley also confirmed a similar response from the Minnesota Timberwolves when New York tried to connect with their head coach. '@MikeFrancesa said Knicks reached out to Minnesota and were denied permission to talk to Chris Finch,' Begley added. The Athletic's Kelly Iko previously noted that the Rockets had no interest in entertaining any Udoka-to-NY scenario. This isn't the only coaching candidate the Knicks have eyed. Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is also on their radar. While there's been no formal request made yet, ESPN's Brian Windhorst said, "There is mutual intrigue on both sides." Kidd, who ended his playing career in New York and previously coached the Brooklyn Nets, could be an ideal fit. However, insiders believe Dallas will push back if an official request comes in. 'Dallas... can simply refuse to grant the Knicks permission to speak with Kidd once formally asked,' wrote Marc Stein in his newsletter. James Edwards III echoed the sentiment in The Athletic, saying, 'When that time comes, per multiple league sources, the expectation is that the Mavericks will deny that request.' With Houston and Minnesota standing firm, and Dallas unlikely to cooperate, the Knicks' coaching search may be entering difficult territory. Regardless, the hunt continues.

New York Knicks set to acquire Kevin Durant? Insider reacts to blockbuster trade rumour

Kevin Durant is currently one of the most sought-after players in the market. The Phoenix Suns forward has already been linked with a potential move to the San Antonio Spurs, with reports suggesting mutual interest. However, the latest developments point to the New York Knicks emerging as frontrunners in a blockbuster trade. But how accurate are the reports? The Knicks have shown hopes of revival after their run to the Eastern Conference Finals, which could entice the two-time NBA Finals MVP to agree to the trade. Moreover, there is a school of thought that the dismissal of head coach Tom Thibodeau could be a step in the direction towards the Durant move. However, in a report in Athlon Sports, a reliable source, Ian Begley, made an honest admission about the potential blockbuster transfer. He said that he does not want the fans to get too excited over the idea, implying that it might not be certain. "My intel all along has been, it's very unlikely to happen," Begley stated. "So, if I'm guessing today, I would guess that that does not come to fruition." Begley continued with the following statement on ESPN New York. "Did they check in at the deadline? I'm not questioning that report. I think at the end of the day, getting something to the finish line, I would be very surprised if he ended up here in New York for many different reasons. So if I'm a Knicks fan and I'm wondering where are they going to go, are they going to trade for Giannis [Antetokounmpo] or trade for KD, ... I would not put a ton of stock in anything you see on Durant and the Knicks at this point. I think it would take a big change over there for them to be super aggressive and trying to get to the finish line on a Durant deal." While the Knicks have been the sort of team that loves hunting for big fish, the Durant move is unlikely to pan out this time.

Sources: Don't count the Knicks out on a potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade

NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo could be looking for a new city to call home this offseason – could that mean we see the Greek Freak in New York? According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Antetokounmpo, for the first time, is "open-minded about whether his best fit is remaining in Milwaukee – or playing elsewhere." Advertisement After trading for Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges and re-signing OG Anunoby, the Knicks - on paper - don't look like a team that could trade for Antetokounmpo. But league sources familiar with the dynamic say it would be foolish to count the Knicks out because of their roster construction, according to SNY's Ian Begley. If the 2024-25 season had gone poorly, the Knicks would have had strong interest in dealing for Antetokounmpo, Begley notes. The Knick focus at the moment is far from Antetokounmpo; they host Boston in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series and hold a 2-1 series lead. While Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to an NBA title in 2020-21, the Bucks have been bounced in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last three years. Advertisement Per Charania, Antetokounmpo and his representatives will meet with the Bucks front office at some point this offseason to discuss his future with the club. He is currently on his second super-max contract with Milwaukee, and is under contract through the 2026-27 season, with a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. "The Nets, it should be noted, have a bevy of assets to offer in a trade for Antetokounmpo – or another star," Begley wrote in April. "Brooklyn owns four first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft and has 13 tradeable first-round picks in the next seven drafts." Antetokounmpo was named to his ninth-straight All-Star team this season, averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists.

Amherst County Deputy vehicle hit by driver during traffic stop

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is grateful that a deputy is okay after being hit by a motorist during a traffic stop on May 9. The sheriff said that around 7 p.m. on Friday, a deputy was in their vehicle on the right side of Route 29N near the Tye River Bridge. While issuing a citation, they were suddenly sideswiped by a passing motorist. (Photo Credit: Amherst County Sheriff's Office) No injuries have currently been reported; however, the sheriff said the deputy had their vehicle emergency lights on at the time of the collision and is encouraging drivers to be alert while on the road. Amherst County Sheriff Chief Deputy and Major James Begley told WFXR News that the Move Over Law is for the protection of everyone. Hillsville Fire Department responds to rollover crash in Carroll County 'If you can't move over, slow down. You never know when an officer is going to be getting out of their vehicle,' said Begley. 'This applies to VDOT and emergency responders, tow truck drivers, and just people pulled over on the side of the road.' The best practice when approaching a stopped vehicle with flashing emergency or hazard lights is to change lanes or significantly reduce your speed. Failure to follow this law can lead to serious accidents, the Sheriff's Office said. In a social media post released online, images 'show the importance of the law.' (Photo Credit: Amherst County Sheriff's Office) Virginia State Police are investigating the crash, and charges have been filed against the driver. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
