Bestselling author and wife of Weezer bassist fired at police, authorities say

A bestselling author who was shot by police is accused of firing at officers as they searched for multiple hit-and-run suspects in her residential Los Angeles neighborhood, a police official said Thursday. An investigation revealed shell casing and video showed Jillian Lauren Shriner repeatedly ignoring police commands to disarm during an encounter Wednesday and firing her weapon, Los Angeles police communications director Jennifer Forkish said in a statement. She was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and booked on a charge of attempted murder. Jail records show she was released on bond Wednesday night. No one else was injured. Shriner, 51, who is married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, is a journalist and the author of several books, including 'Behold the Monster: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer.' She did not respond to a request for comment. Her manager declined to comment. A representative for Shriner has not responded to a request for comment. A source close to Weezer told NBC News that the band plans to play at the Coachella music festival this weekend. It isn't clear whether Scott Shriner will play. Authorities said the confrontation occurred Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles' Eagle Rock neighborhood after three suspects in a hit-and-run on a nearby freeway ditched their vehicle and ran into the residential area. The California Highway Patrol had sought help from the Los Angeles Police Department to find the suspects. When officers were directed to the backyard of a home where one of the suspects was seen, they saw Shriner armed with a handgun in a neighboring yard, the police department said in a news release. 'The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times,' it said. 'However, she refused. Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers." Forkish did not provide additional details about whether the video indicated Shriner said anything before she is alleged to have opened fire. The police department said in the news release that Shriner was not involved in the hit-and-run and that she was in the backyard of her home when authorities ordered her to drop her gun. After Shriner was struck by gunfire, she ran into her house, the police department said. She was later taken into custody and hospitalized. A 9 mm gun was found during a search of her home, according to the release. One of the hit-and-run suspects was found, cited and released, the police department said. The two others were not. Days Before Weezer Set to Play Coachella, Bassist Scott Shriner's Wife Shot by LAPD

New York Times best selling author Jillian Lauren Shriner - who is married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner - was in stable condition Thursday, a day after she was shot by the LAPD and arrested on attempted murder charges after a wild foot pursuit prompted by a three-car freeway crash led cops to the couple's Eagle Rock neighborhood. The Hollywood-action-style incident began around 3 p.m. Tuesday when California Highway Patrol responded to reports of a crash in the eastbound lanes of the 134 Freeway, west of Figueroa near Eagle Rock. Three occupants in one of the cars smashed up on the freeway fled the scene on foot, which prompted CHP to call the LAPD for backup. A foot chase ensued in the upscale neighborhood where Jillian Lauren Shriner lives with the rocker and their two sons. At some point the 51-year-old mom emerged with a handgun and approached a neighbor's yard where LAPD officers were about to apprehend one of the three men suspected in the hit-and-run on the freeway. That man, police say, had stripped down to his underwear, jumped into a backyard pool, and was watering plants in an attempt to blend in. As cops moved in on that suspect, the LAPD says, officers spotted Shriner allegedly armed with a 9-millimeter handgun in the backyard at her home nearby. Police say she pointed the weapon at officers and refused to drop it despite several orders from the cops. An officer then fired a round that hurled through her shoulder, what the LAPD calls a non life threatening injury, LAPD officials say. "During the search, officers encountered a woman armed with a firearm in the backyard of a home. After repeated commands to drop the weapon were ignored, an OIS occurred," the LAPD said in a statement. "The woman, later confirmed to be a resident, was struck by gunfire & taken to the hospital for treatment."Wounded, Shriner ran back into her home and emerged with her hands up alongside a babysitter minutes later where she was arrested on attempted murder charges. The weapon was recovered inside her home. Shriner's husband Scott has not made a statement about his wife's incident, which comes just days before Weezer is slated to play the famed Coachella festival on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Jillian Shriner, who advocates self defense on her Instagram page, was charged early Wednesday with attempted murder, with bail set at $1 million, according to the public arrest record. She posted bond Wednesday night. Shriner is the author of a true crime tome that she wrote alongside famed writer Michael Connelly, "Behold the Monster: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer" along with two memoirs that became New York Times bestsellers. "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem" is based on her time working for Prince Jefri Bolkiah, brother of the Sultan of Brunei and 'Everything You Ever Wanted' about her journey into motherhood through adoption. The couple are parents to two sons, Tariku Moon and Jovi Starshine. The man who stripped down to his underwear in an unsuccessful attempt to elude police after the freeway crash was taken into custody. The two other suspects who fled the collision alongside him remain at large.

Police shoot best-selling author, saying she pointed gun at officers

A best-selling author was shot by police and accused of attempted murder after authorities said she pointed a gun at officers who were searching for hit-and-run suspects in a residential Los Angeles neighborhood. Authorities shot Jillian Lauren Shriner, 51, Tuesday afternoon after repeatedly telling her to drop the handgun, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release. Shriner is also the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner. Shriner fled into her home and was later taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the department said. She was booked while hospitalized. Neither Shriner nor her manager responded to requests for comment Wednesday night, and a representative for Weezer did not respond to a request for comment. Police said Shriner was not involved in the hit-and-run incident and the shooting is being investigated by LAPD's Force Investigation Division. In a Wednesday night news conference, Detective Meghan Aguilar said that it was not clear from body-worn police video what happened in the moments before the shooting, or whether she fired at officers. "At that point there were some commands given, multiple commands to drop the gun, drop the weapon, unfortunately it did result in an officer-involved shooting," she said. Aguilar said that police body-worn police camera had not provided "a clear view of what she did with that firearm" or said it was "not clear if she fired at officers or not." Police are set to review multiple videos and seek access to any surveillance camera footage from the area. Shriner is a journalist and author of several books, including 'Behold the Monster: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer.' The department said officers encountered Shriner in the backyard of her home in Eagle Rock, north of downtown Los Angeles, Tuesday afternoon after the California Highway Patrol requested help finding three hit-and-run suspects allegedly involved in a crash on a nearby freeway. The suspects fled their vehicle and ran into the residential neighborhood, the department said. Weezer bassist Scott Shriner's wife shot by police, booked for attempted murder

Weezer bassist Scott Shriner's wife, Jillian Lauren Shriner, was shot and wounded by Los Angeles police officers after she allegedly pointed a gun at authorities Tuesday. According to a press release issued by the LAPD, multiple officers responded to a request for backup "locating three misdemeanor hit-and-run suspects who fled into a residential neighborhood" Tuesday afternoon. When the officers were in the rear of a home where a suspect was last seen running, they saw a female, who was later identified as Shriner's wife, in the yard of a nearby home. According to the press release, Jillian, 51, was armed with a handgun and was ordered to drop the weapon "numerous times" by law enforcement. "However, she refused," according to the LAPD. "However, she refused." Jillian then allegedly pointed her gun at the officers before police shot her. She retreated back inside her home, later exiting and being taken into custody, according to the LAPD. LAFD paramedics transported Jillian to a hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. According to the LAPD, Jillian was not involved in the hit-and-run and was booked in absentia for attempted murder. A 9mm handgun was recovered from her home, according to police. No officers were injured during the shooting. Jillian's bail was set at $1 million by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. Weezer, which includes Shriner, Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson and Brian Bell, was recently announced as a surprise performer at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival that kicks off April 11. The band is scheduled to perform Saturday. A rep for Weezer did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. Scott and Jillian tied the knot in 2005. They have adopted two children together, according to Page Six. Jillian is an author who has published books, including "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem" and "Behold the Monster: Confronting America's Most Prolific Serial Killer." In March, Jillian took to Instagram to share news about her health. "Yes, I have a little bit of the C word y'all. I know a lot of us do. I'm here to thank the incredible oncology team here, who pulled me through a complicated operation without a hitch. I am always so grateful for every second of the compassionate, and excellent medical care I receive in my life. Thank you to all the remarkable health care workers, who take our lives in your hands. And let's all breathe," she captioned her post.
