US flag on the ground at Beirut's airport sparks outrage ahead of Nasrallah funeral

Published February 23rd, 2025 - 08:16 GMT ALBAWABA - Lebanon's Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport now features the US flag on the ground alongside what seems to be the Israeli flag, for people to step on it, sparking outrage among American politicians on social media. This comes amid the arrival of Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi who landed in Beirut to attend the funeral of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. In addition to Araghchi, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf will also attend the funeral. The photo circulating across social media showcased the US flag on the ground in the arrivals or departures sections of the airport as people were seen waiting alongside the barriers placed. Several US politicians took to Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) deeming the gesture as disrespectful to the country. A Lebanese social media user claimed that it's Hezbollah that placed the US flag on the airport's floor and wrote, "As a Lebanese myself, it's the members of Hezbollah who placed this US flag on the ground. Most Lebanese are thankful for the support from the United States. Lebanon doesn't condone this message of hate towards the United States. It has been removed since then." Five months ago, Israel targeted Hezbollah and its former leader Hasan Nasrallah by dropping over 80 bombs on Southern Lebanon. Nasrallah died inside one of the military group's main operations rooms. Nasrallah was considered one of the most prominent figures of Hezbollah since he was the group's leader for over 30 years and one of its founders. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Senior Iraqi delegation to attend Nasrallah funeral in Beirut

Shafaq News/ A high-ranking Iraqi delegation is set to depart for Beirut on Sunday aboard a private aircraft to participate in the funeral procession of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, according to informed sources. The delegation is expected to include senior political leaders, government officials, and prominent party figures. Sources indicate that the Iraqi delegation may be the largest official contingent attending the funeral rites. Simultaneously, symbolic funeral ceremonies for Nasrallah will be held in multiple Iraqi cities, aligning with the official proceedings in Lebanon. The funeral is scheduled to take place at Kamil Shamon Sports City in Beirut on Sunday, with large crowds expected to gather. Hezbollah set the location for the ceremony in Beirut's southern suburbs after security concerns prevented the event from being held for months following Nasrallah's assassination in an Israeli strike on September 27, 2024. The official proceedings are anticipated to last approximately an hour, followed by a funeral procession to a newly designated burial site situated between the two main roads leading to Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport. According to Shafaq News' correspondent, extensive preparations are underway at the sports complex on the outskirts of Beirut's southern suburb to ensure the smooth organization of the ceremony. Hezbollah, in coordination with Lebanese security forces, has implemented a comprehensive security plan that includes a heavy deployment of personnel, security checkpoints, and regulated traffic flow around the stadium to prevent congestion and disruptions. Kamil Shamon Sports City, Lebanon's largest stadium, is expected to reach full capacity as tens of thousands of mourners from across Lebanon and beyond—particularly from Iraq and Iran—converge for the event. Shafaq News' correspondent reported that teams are finalizing preparations for the main stage, where official speeches will be delivered. Giant screens will be installed around the venue to broadcast the funeral proceedings to attendees gathered outside. Special seating areas have also been designated for official delegations and political and religious figures expected to attend. In light of the event, Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport will temporarily shut down for four hours on Sunday, as announced by Lebanon's Directorate General of Civil Aviation earlier this week. Additionally, reports suggest that a joint funeral prayer may be held in Beirut for Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah's second-in-command, who was also assassinated in an Israeli strike. His burial is expected to follow the completion of Nasrallah's funeral proceedings.

VIDEO: Tensions in Beirut after Iranian plane denied landing at airport

Beirut's airport road witnessed security tensions as a group of citizens blocked the road in protest against the prevention of an Iranian plane from landing at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport. The Lebanese army intervened and managed to reopen the road after hours of demonstrations. This development follows statements made by 'Israeli' army spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who once again accused Beirut's airport of being exploited by Iran's Quds Force and Hezbollah to smuggle funds for armament through civilian flights. Meanwhile, reports emerged that an Iranian civilian aircraft carrying Lebanese pilgrims to Iran's holy sites was prevented from departing Tehran International Airport due to a lack of authorization to land in Beirut. According to sources, dozens of Lebanese passengers were stranded at Tehran airport for more than four hours. The flight was scheduled to depart at 1:00 AM Beirut time, but passengers were later informed that they would not be able to return to Lebanon that day due to the denial of landing clearance in Beirut. Stranded travelers urged Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to intervene and facilitate their return home. Commenting on the incident, a Lebanese civil aviation source told An-Nahar newspaper that "no landing permits were granted to the Iranian airline for Beirut Airport, and the plane carrying Lebanese passengers has not yet departed from Tehran." The source clarified that "flight authorizations are issued by Lebanon's Directorate General of Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport." Amid the escalating situation, some protesters took to blocking the airport road in response to the decision, before Lebanese army units intervened to restore order and reopen the road.
