Women's Premier Division wrap: Wexford win big at Treaty United as rain takes toll on fixture list
Wexford enjoyed a commanding 4-1 win at Treaty United to tighten their grip on third place in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division on a Saturday heavily disrupted by weather-related postponements.
A powerful Leah McGrath strike opened the scoring for Wexford with the game just a minute old before Treaty drew level through Bella Flocchini's long-range shot which struck the bar and bounced down, although it was unclear if the ball had crossed the goal-line.
However, Republic of Ireland call-up Ellen Molloy proved talismanic once again for Wexford as she restored the visitors' lead in the 28th minute.
Kylie Murphy made sure of all three points with a late brace to give Wexford victory and move them up to 19 points in the table, four clear of Shamrock Rovers who have a game in hand.
Elsewhere in the basement battle, bottom side DLR Waves earned their first win of the season as Amber Cullen scored with her first touch from close range to seal a 1-0 win over second-from-bottom Sligo Rovers at the Carlisle Grounds.
Galway United came away from Cork City with the three points after a goal fest on Leeside.
Zoe Finnerty put the hosts ahead on 19 minutes, forcing home with her midriff from close range, but Niamh Farrelly levelled for Galway seven minutes later.
Galway went ahead in the 51st minute thanks to Ava Mullins' dipping long-ranger. Cork swiftly hit back again, this time through Ellie O'Brien, before Jodie Griffin prodded Galway 3-2 ahead on the hour mark. Aislinn Meaney made it safe in the 90th minute as a rollwecoaster encounter went Galway's way.
Earlier, while three games did go ahead, half of the fixtures list fell foul of the heavy rain with those in Dublin affected.
Shamrock Rovers were due to host Waterford in Tallaght but it was called off in the morning, as was the much-anticipated top-of-the-table clash between Shelbourne and leaders Athlone at Tolka Park.
