Paint spill blamed for stream turning white

Diluted paint is suspected to be the reason for parts of a stream turning white, the Environment Agency (EA) has said. The organisation is looking into any potential environmental impact following the incident near Belmont Brook in Hereford, on Sunday. The brook runs into the River Wye, but the EA does not believe there has been any effect on wildlife so far. In a statement, it added it would continue to keep an eye on the area, and urged people to dispose of paint at their local recycling centre and not down the drain. The stream runs through the Belmont housing estate and goes into the river opposite the city's rowing club. It is a popular angling spot with the fishing rights owned by Hereford and District Angling Society. The EA asked anyone who suspected water pollution to report it to its 24/7 incident hotline.
