Early Reactions to THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Hint at a Lovecraftian, Cosmic Horror MCU Film — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios just wrapped up some recent test screenings for The Fantastic Four: First Steps , and it sounds like they're taking Marvel's First Family in a cool and interesting new direction, one that leans into eerie, cosmic horror vibes. According to a new report from Murphy's Multiverse, this new take on the Fantastic Four is described as a 'straightforward' comic book movie, but that's not to say it plays things safe. One attendee from an early test screening said the film has a 'cosmic horror angle' that feels very 'Lovecraftian,' especially when it comes to Galactus. Ralph Ineson, known for his commanding voice and presence in films like The Witch and The Green Knight , reportedly steals the show as Galactus. According to the reactions, he's 'terrifying,' with one viewer calling him 'one of the best parts of the movie.' Considering how tricky Galactus can be to adapt, this sounds like Marvel might have finally cracked the code by going all-in on the existential dread he brings with him. But it's not all glowing praise. Some viewers weren't thrilled with how the characters were handled, particularly Reed Richards and Ben Grimm. Feedback from the screening mentions a 'lack of character development,' and there's specific criticism of how Reed's powers are showcased, as well as how The Thing is used in the story. That said, test screenings often reflect a film still in progress, there's time to tighten things up before the July release. But, a retro-futuristic style paired with cosmic horror? I like the sound of that! 'Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they face their most daunting challenge yet.' Directed by Matt Shakman ( WandaVision ), the film stars Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne, also appear in the film in undisclosed roles. Then there's Julia Garner as Silver Surfer, and Michael Giacchino is scoring the film, so expect the soundtrack to match the retro-future vibe. The film marks the start of Phase Six and hits theaters July 25, 2025.

Fantastic Four star Kate Mara reveals if she will watch the new film

'Fantastic Four' star Kate Mara says she and husband and co-star Jamie Bell will go check out the new movie 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps'. A decade ago, the 42-year-old actress starred as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman in the 2015 film 'Fantastic Four', while her 39-year-old spouse portrayed Ben Grimm/The Thing in the Josh Trank Marvel flick. And Kate has revealed she and the family will head to the cinema to catch Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic) and co in the new superhero film. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "I love going to the movies. It's my favourite thing to do, especially with my husband Jamie [Bell] and our kids. We have an 11-year-old. So I'm sure we'll go, especially for a movie like that where you want to see it on a big screen with an audience and popcorn. Absolutely. It's totally different than ours, so why not? I really love the cast. I love Pedro Pascal. Yeah, I would totally see the new Marvel." Ebon Moss Bachrach will play Ben Grimm/The Thing, with Vanessa Kirby starring as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. Pedro recently admitted he found playing Mister Fantastic "really intimidating". The 50-year-old actor always feels under immense pressure when joining established franchises, having had roles in 'Game of Thrones' and 'Star Wars', because he wants to make audiences "happy" while staying true to himself. He told Entertainment Weekly: 'It was really intimidating. 'I relied on the people that I was around to hold me to the experience and help get me through it. Stepping into something like Game of Thrones and then going into the early days of Netflix with Narcos and then Star Wars and the world of video games with The Last of Us, each time I've felt like I couldn't top how intimidating the last one was. They're all scary because you really want to make people happy, especially if it's something that's widely known with particular expectations around it because you want those expectations to be met. You also want to be authentic to yourself so that it can be the best that it can be for anybody who wants to be entertained by a story and travel with us into this world.'

Marvel's FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Gets a New Clip and TV Spot — GeekTyrant

Marvel just dropped new clip and couple of tie-in TV spots for The Fantastic Four: First Steps promoting the NBA Western Conference Finals. The retro-futuristic tone that I love about the film is front and center. The clip sees Reed Richards, Sue Storm and Johnny Storm in an elevator going to the top of the Baxter Building, where Ben Grimm and H.E.R.B.I.E. are making dinner. Johnny is eager to catch the start of the game, and considers "flaming on" to fly ahead. We already knew First Steps was going to take us to an alternate version of the 1960s, a world where technology has advanced far beyond even our modern world, but still looks and feels like the Space Race-era. That blend of retro optimism and bif futurism is what gives this film its unique pulse, and the latest TV spot leans into that aesthetic. We also get a shot of Ben Grimm jumping intot the drivers seat of the car. Much of this universe's progress is thanks to Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic whose mind-bending tech has reportedly reshaped the very course of human evolution in this timeline. Director Matt Shakman recently described the film's visual approach as 'a blend of Jack Kirby's vibrant artistry and Stanley Kubrick's epic, otherworldly vision.' That gives us a pretty good idea of the creative ambition behind this thing. It's cosmic, it's colorful, and it's daring in a way that feels like a fresh jolt to the Marvel formula. 'Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they face their most daunting challenge yet. 'Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus' plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren't bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.' Directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman, the film boasts a high-profile cast led by Pedro Pascal (Reed), Vanessa Kirby (Sue), Joseph Quinn (Johnny), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben), with a supporting lineup that includes John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Sarah Niles in yet-to-be-revealed roles. The script was originally written by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer, it was revised by Cameron Squires and Avatar: The Way of Water co-writer Josh Friedman, with Eric Pearson ( Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow ) giving it the final pass.

The First Fantastic Four: First Steps Lego Set Heralds the Coming of Brick-Built Galactus

We're getting closer and closer to the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps, which means, of course, aside from an eventual movie we're about to get oodles of Fantastic Four merchandise. Lego is no stranger to the movie marketing mayhem, as usual, so it's only fitting that we've already got a First Steps set that's mostly a doozy. Mostly. This morning Lego revealed its first Marvel Superheroes set, Fantastic Four vs. Galactus. It's technically our first proper look at the big G's movie design, considering we've mostly seen tiny glimpses of parts of him in the trailers so far, but considering that he a) largely just looks like Galactus from the comics, and b), is made out of Lego, so what you can really discern of any changes the MCU has made to the devourer of worlds is difficult. The simple set, clocking in at 427 pieces, lets you build up a 28cm tall Galactus, and of course gives you each member of the Fantastic Four to do battle with him. Johnny Storm includes flame effects to put on his feet and hands (and a small support stand so he can fly around Galactus being an annoyance), Sue has little invisibility field effects, and then… well, Ben and Reed get the short end of the Lego stick. Lego Marvel Superheroes Fantastic Four: First Steps Fantastic Four vs. Galactus Ben's clobbering hands and rocky minifigure head are necessary sacrifices to make a Thing minifigure over the beefy mold Lego usually reserves for larger characters like the Hulk, but it does make him look a bit less burly next to his fellow FF teammates. But Reed's elongated leg pieces make him look a little less Mr. Fantastic, and a little more Stilt Man. Outside of making unique pieces though, there's probably not much else Lego could've done to make extending parts for Reed's powers but surely there could've been ways to build legs that weren't so rigid? Still, at least the minifigures sans-power-parts look pretty nifty. And Galactus himself looks great. But is he $70 great? You'll be able to find out when the set releases on June 1.
