Fake news, hate posts prompt CID to hire 32 computer science professionals

1 2 3 Kolkata: The Bengal CID announced plans to hire 32 computer science professionals to strengthen its cybercrime-fighting capabilities amid rising concerns over fake news and hate speech on social media. The decision comes following a surge in fake news and hate content on the internet related to the Murshidabad violence, Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Combined efforts by Bengal Police, Kolkata Police and CID identified more than 1,500 social media profiles responsible for spreading misinformation and hate content. The primary responsibilities of these analysts will include gathering electronic evidence, monitoring social media platforms for hate speech and fake news, and coordinating with social media administrators to expedite content removal when necessary. Besides gathering e-evidence, they will be tasked with tracking down hate speeches and fake news round-the-clock. They will follow up with concerned authorities to take them down in the quickest time. They will also work to maintain liaison with these social media administrators to help CID gather leads. Perhaps realising the mindset of the young generation, even the job advertisements have been put out on CID's website for everyone to see. Applications will be accepted online from June 2 to July 1. According to the official notification posted on CID website, candidates must possess either a PGDCA, BSc in computer science, BCA, or DOEACC 'A' level course certification from recognised institutions. The selected analysts will be offered a monthly salary of Rs 21,000 on a temporary and contractual basis. The state CID earlier advertised for nine different posts of cyber forensics experts (CFEs) who will be domain experts in their own rights with actually no background whatsoever about traditional policing. Incidentally, this will also include crypto analysts. Though these will be contractual posts, the CID, claimed sources, was ready to offer a remuneration that matched the best in the industry. Cops claimed that the state probe agency already hired — or is in the process of hiring — two Cloud forensic experts, one crypto analyst, two disk forensic experts, two mobile forensic experts, one network forensic expert, and one malware forensic expert. The experts will be working in a modern cyber lab, first envisaged in 2017 when the agency decided to recruit 100 software engineers to detect and prevent the spread of rumours on social networking sites.

Fake Mexico video being spread as Shamsherganj incident, say cops, warn of action

1 2 Kolkata: Bengal Police on Thursday warned about a fake video doing the rounds that used visuals from an old clash in Mexico to pass them off as in incident in Murshidabad's Shamsherganj. The cops also cautioned that specific social media accounts were being used with an ulterior motive, with a direct plan to incite violence. In a post, Jangipur Police said: "Recently, it was observed that certain individuals with ulterior motives were posting on social media, referring to an incident from Mexico in 2023 as an event in Shamsherganj, Murshidabad, using fake and anonymous profiles. We urge you to verify the authenticity of such misleading posts before sharing them. Otherwise, legal action will be taken against the perpetrators. All relevant information regarding the fact of the incident has been shared. " Cops said that according to fact-checkers, "a disturbing video is making rounds on social media, alleging that in the Shamsherganj area of Murshidabad district, West Bengal, a Muslim youth brutally set a Hindu girl on fire after she rejected his proposal. This has turned out to be fake". Bengal Police said "the claim being made on social media by showing this horrific video is completely false and misleading". "The actual incident took place long ago, in May 2023, during a clash between two drug trafficking groups in Mexico. During the conflict, members of one group burned a person from the rival group in this brutal manner. This incident has no connection whatsoever with any religious sentiment or event in Murshidabad, Bengal. This misleading video is being circulated on social media solely with the intention of spreading propaganda against Bengal," the FB post by police added. Police said they have started an investigation to trace the source of these "misleading posts". An official said several social media accounts involved in spreading the false narrative have been identified and appropriate legal action would be taken. Senior police officials urged citizens to report any such misleading content on social media platforms. "We have a dedicated team monitoring social media round the clock to prevent the spread of fake news that could potentially disturb communal harmony," said a senior officer. Police have also announced plans to conduct awareness programmes about fact-checking and responsible social media usage across Murshidabad.

Accused of stealing packet of chips, made to do situps, 12 year old boy allegedly dies by suicide

A 12-year-old boy died by suicide after he was accused of 'stealing' a packet of chips from a store and made to do sit-ups by the shopkeeper at Panskura in Paschim Medinipur district, a police officer said Friday. Krishendu Das, a class 7 student, allegedly lifted a packet of chips from a shop at Gosaiber bazar in the Panskura area on Thursday evening after he failed to find the shopkeeper Subhankar Dikshit. He had called out 'uncle I will buy chips' repeatedly without any response and finally left the shop allegedly with one packet of chips, the officer said quoting his grief-stricken mother. He was allegedly chased by Dikshit who came back to the shop soon afterwards, slapped and asked to do sit-ups in full public view, the officer said quoting a complaint by the family. The officer said a probe is underway Das' mother was summoned to the spot and she also scolded him and slapped him while the boy claimed he picked up the junk food packet lying in a heap before the shop and would have come to pay later. He even offered to pay immediately apologising for lifting the packet without the consent of the shopowner but the shopowner accused him of lying. A sulking Krishnendu then returned to his house with his mother, bolted the door of his room from inside and did not open the door. After some time his mother along with neighbours broke open the door and found him dead, the officer said, adding that a note purportedly scribbled by him in Bengali was found lying on the side. 'Maa I am not a thief. I did not steal. Uncle (shopkeeper) was not around as I waited. While returning I spotted a kurkure packet lying on the road and picked it up. I love Kurkure,' said the note. Krishnendu further said, 'These are my final words before leaving'. He was taken to Tamluk Hospital and admitted to ICU but died soon afterwards. The shopowner, also a civic volunteer associated with Bengal Police to assist in traffic management, initially claimed he did not assault the child. But after the incident became known he could not be traced as a crowd assembled before his closed shop.
