Moroccan Activist Said Benjebli Dies at 46
Rabat – Morocco is mourning activist Said Benjebli, who died on Wednesday, April 2, at the age of 46.
Benjebli has been known for his online presence and his political views, and he has gone through radical shifts in his beliefs throughout his life.
He was a former active member of the Al Adl Wal Ihsan movement during his academic years at university, before a radical shift in his political views that promoted fierce criticism against Islamist movements.
While living in Boston, Benjebli wrote a letter that went viral among journalism groups and social media, in which he reportedly acknowledged that he suffered mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, over the years.
In this alleged letter, he apologized to his family, wife, and son months before his death.
'I turn to those closest to me. I deeply apologize to my small family for the great calamity that has befallen them, especially my wife and children. I extend my sincerest apologies to my son, whom I left behind in childhood, and to my mother, my siblings, and my extended family,' the reported letter said.
A group of journalists said the activist's body will be repatriated on Sunday for his funeral.
