This longshot from North Jersey has a chance to impress the New York Giants at rookie camp

EAST RUTHERFORD - Christian Dremel is embracing this life as an NFL long shot. The wide receiver and punt returner spent last weekend in Kansas City, one of 60 rookie tryouts - yes, you read that correctly - fighting for reps and a chance to impress Andy Reid and Chiefs' brass. Advertisement Despite a good showing, the quest for a contract was an empty one. That sets the stage for another audition plenty closer to home. From a walk-on at Rutgers from Don Bosco to a shot at the NFL, Dremel hopes to make the most of his tryout at the New York Giants' rookie camp this weekend. "I guess I'm not supposed to be here, but I feel like I've been through this my whole career," Dremel said. "This is obviously a dream come true just to have this opportunity, to have this chance and compete to be on one of the 32 teams in the NFL. Had a chance to put on a Chiefs helmet and run around and play football last week, and now I'm excited to try and make the Giants. Something I've learned, when you're fighting for everything, you've got to take it one day at a time by focusing on one thing at a time. Every play, every day, adapt to that mindset." Rebilas-Imagn Images Rookies across the league are reporting for their first pro workouts. For some, their names were called in the draft. This will be the first time for potential franchise cornerstones like Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart to step on the field as Giants. Advertisement For others, undrafted free agents signed as the festivities finished up two weeks ago. Then there are those like Dremel, determined to forge ahead in spite of the odds against them. St Joseph At Don Bosco Hs Football 'From when he was at Don Bosco, I coached against him, and at the time, it was like, 'Who's this little runt, all of 115 pounds or so, making every play,' he made you notice him,' former Bergen Catholic coach and current Syracuse quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile told and The Record. 'I ended up going to Rutgers, and was involved in recruiting, we wanted to build up the walk-on pool, and to me, [Dremel] was one of those guys, he has such a strong will and great work ethic, he could handle that challenge. I remember telling him, 'You have to make it so we can't not give you a scholarship,' and that was the mindset.' Advertisement It's not an easy road to travel, but Dremel knows it is possible. Elijah Chatman arrived for Giants rookie camp a year ago with promise of untapped potential and a promise from renowned defensive line coach Andre Patterson that he would get a fair look. He wound up earning a contract, then a spot on the 53-man roster and played in all 17 games with three starts. Giants coach Brian Daboll showed highlight plays from Chatman and Ryder Anderson, who made the team as an undrafted rookie three years ago, to the rookies in a team meeting Friday morning. Could Dremel impress the Giants enough? Maybe. The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder had a strong performance at the team's local pro day as a punt returner and Big Blue did not draft a wide receiver, so for depth purposes, general manager Joe Schoen may be open to bringing in receivers to challenge the back end of the position. Advertisement Two seasons ago, Dremel took a significant step forward in production at Rutgers, as he started all 12 games and finished as the team's leading receiver with 34 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns. He had just one catch during the 2022 season before his breakout. Then, after deciding to return to Rutgers for one final year, Dremel ended up spending much of the season doing whatever he could to maximize his opportunities. Eat Rutherford, NJ -- May 9, 2025 -- Wide receiver, Christian Dremel during practice at Giants Rookie Minicamp. "Preparation - that's the way I'm gonna impress," Dremel said. "I'm not going to walk out there, and people are going to look at me and say, 'Oh wow, who's this guy?' My approach to meetings, how I carry myself with the other guys, that's going to matter. Football wise, it's about running routes, catching the ball, showing great fundamentals and not making the moment bigger than it needs to be." Like countless others across the league, that's what this comes down to: Dremel just wants a chance. Advertisement "This is a big deal in its own right, I know that," he said. "But I've prepared my whole life for this. I'm ready to give it my best shot and see where it takes me." 2026 four-star cornerback Jordan Thomas commits to Ohio State

Class of 2026 four-star cornerback Jordan Thomas has made his commitment decision. Thomas pledged to Ohio State on Monday at a ceremony at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey. Thomas garnered more than 40 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment. He choose the Buckeyes over fellow finalists Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas A&M. Advertisement He took unofficial visits to each of his finalists. He was most recently at Ohio State on April 6. He also took a visit to Columbus in March. The only official visit Thomas will take is to Ohio State, according to his agent Latish Kinsler. At Ohio State, Thomas will reunite with his former teammate at Bergen Catholic, Quincy Porter, a four-star signee for the Buckeyes in the 2025 class. Thomas currently ranks as the No. 3 prospect in the state of New Jersey and the No. 24 cornerback in the 2026 cycle. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound has the ideal frame for the cornerback position and likely projects as outside corner, but with the versatility to play on the inside as a nickel back or safety as well. Thomas is physical, possesses impressive ball skills, has sound technique in pass coverage, is a willing tackler in run support and delivers strong hits. He also plays wide receiver for the Crusaders. Advertisement He is a Navy All-American Bowl selection. Thomas has won three state championships with Bergen Catholic, including most recently in 2024, as he helped lead the Crusaders to the program's fourth consecutive championship with a win over Don Bosco Prep in the Non-Public A state title game. In addition to his finalists, Thomas received scholarship offers from Alabama, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Illinois, Maryland, Miami (FL.), Michigan State, Minnesota, North Carolina, Northwestern, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, South Carolina, Stanford, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin and others. Thomas is represented by Kinsler, who is the president of football for LifeStyle Sports Agency. With Thomas now in the fold, Ohio State's 2026 recruiting class now includes 13 total commitments. The Buckeyes currently rank as the third team team nationally.

Down to 2: Notre Dame football loses QB Steve Angeli to transfer portal

SOUTH BEND —And then there were two. Notre Dame football saw its three-way quarterback battle for the 2025 starting job reduced by one with Thursday's news that fourth-year junior Steve Angeli is headed to the transfer portal. Advertisement Angeli confirmed the decision with a social media post on Saturday evening. Angeli finished 8-of-11 passing for 108 yards and one sack in the Blue-Gold Game on April 12. Angeli hit freshman wideout Scrap Richardson for a 16-yard score on his fourth and final series, but redshirt freshman CJ Carr and third-year backup Kenny Minchey apparently did enough to this spring to close the experience gap with Angeli. A three-star recruit from Bergen Catholic in northern New Jersey, Angeli learned under three different offensive coordinators during his time in South Bend. He also won the Sun Bowl against Oregon State in 2023 with quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli calling plays as the interim OC. Advertisement Marcus Freeman: Notre Dame football coach talks current transfer rules: 'That's not real life' When Riley Leonard was briefly sidelined due to concussion protocol in the Jan. 9 Orange Bowl win over Penn State, it was Angeli who led the Irish downfield for their first points of the game. Irish coach Marcus Freeman suggested after the spring game that there had been little separation between the three starting candidates through 12 spring practices. 'It's crazy to think this, but you've got three guys that all could lead your program to a victory and be your starting quarterback,' Freeman said. 'You would like to go into fall with a two-quarterback battle. It's really hard truly having a three-quarterback battle.' Advertisement With practice repetitions at a premium, Freeman added there would be 'conversations about what's best for our program, what's best for our quarterbacks, and we'll make those decisions in the future.' Comparing QB candidates by the numbers For the Irish and their first true quarterback derby since 2022 (Tyler Buchner vs. Drew Pyne), the next phase of that future started Wednesday. Kenny Minchey: Don't overlook rocket-armed Minchey in Notre Dame football's QB battle Kennedy Urlacher: Safety reportedly headed to transfer portal after one year at Notre Dame football A top-50 recruit from Saline, Mich., Carr has four game snaps to his credit, all in last year's blowout win at Purdue. After suffering an injury to his throwing elbow in practice in late September, Carr spent the rest of his redshirt season rehabbing. Advertisement In this year's spring game, Carr went 14-of-19 passing for 170 yards and two touchdowns. The grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr also threw an interception. Minchey, the Hendersonville, Tenn., product with the most dual-threat capability of the trio, went 7-of-15 passing for 106 yards and added a 4-yard touchdown run in the scrimmage. Minchey, who dealt with a minor shoulder injury in his senior year at Pope John Paul II High School, also took two sacks and finished with 11 rushing yards on six attempts. Minchey has appeared in four games (17 total snaps) and is 3-for-3 passing for 16 yards. In an indoor scrimmage on April 5, Angeli struggled to a 1-for-7 showing in the team portion with his lone completion going for 7 yards to freshman Elijah Burress. Angeli's last five pass attempts fell incomplete, although a short pass to Jadarian Price was wiped out by a defensive penalty for roughing the quarterback. Advertisement Unofficially in that same scrimmage, Carr went 2-of-3 passing for 29 yards and a sack, courtesy of Bryce Young. Carr finished the session with a 25-yard scoring strike to Burress on a seam route. Minchey went 5-for-10 passing for 63 yards and interception (Isaiah Dunn). Minchey ran twice for 16 yards in the team portion. Mike Berardino covers Notre Dame football for the South Bend Tribune and Follow him on social media @MikeBerardino. Former Bergen Catholic quarterback Steve Angeli transfers to Syracuse football

Former state-champion Bergen Catholic quarterback Steve Angeli is transferring to Syracuse, where he'll be reunited with another prominent Bergen Catholic name. Nunzio Campanile, who coached the Bergen Catholic program from 2010-17 and won a state title in his final season at the helm, is the Orange's quarterbacks coach. The head coach is Fran Brown, a former Camden High School star who coached at Paul VI in 2010 before jumping to the college ranks. Advertisement Angeli, who led the Crusaders to the Non-Public A state championship back in 2021, spent the first three years of his college career as the backup QB at Notre Dame. He announced last week that he was entering the transfer portal. Angeli announced his transfer to Syracuse on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday night. His most notable moment at Notre Dame came in last year's Orange Bowl when he completed 6 of 7 passes for 44 yards, leading the Fighting Irish into the red zone to kick a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Those were the first points of the game for Notre Dame, which came back in the second half to beat Penn State, 27-24, and advance to the national championship game. Advertisement Angeli's only college start came in the 2023 Sun Bowl, when he completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns as Notre Dame beat Oregon State, 40-8. Angeli should contend for the starting job at Syracuse. Last year's starter, Kyle McCord, is expected to be selected in the NFL Draft later this week.
