Man accused of stealing police truck

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man came to the police station to turn himself in, did not have a warrant out for his arrest, then stole a police truck. According to the Schuylkill Haven Borough Police Department, Richard Weiss, 49, of Schuylkill Haven, came to the station around 2:20 a.m. Monday morning to turn himself in on a warrant. Police say there was not a warrant for his arrest, and Weiss was advised to go home. Search for missing ATV riders finds two women dead Later in the morning around 3:40 a.m., the officer on duty was told by county dispatch to check if all the trucks were in the parking lot, and one was missing, according to the affidavit. Police say the truck was idling with the spare key in the ignition, and the regular key was with the officer on duty. According to court records, the officer checked the security cameras which showed Weiss entering the vehicle and driving it out of the parking lot. A 'be on the lookout' (BOLO) was issued for the missing police vehicle. Around 3:30 a.m., police were contacted by the Bern Township Police Department in Leesport, Berks County, where Weiss allegedly entered a store and told the manager he was an off duty police officer. Weiss left the store before police were able to arrive, according to the affidavit. Around 6:00 a.m., they were contacted by Philadelphia Police who told them the Wilmington Amtrak Police Department in Delaware had Weiss and the police vehicle in their custody. Police also noted that a Benelli semi-automatic shotgun was in the vehicle but it appeared it hadn't been tampered with. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
