The army of dog owners continues to grow, with 221 different breeds of pedigree dog to choose from, alongside numerous crossbreeds . One thing to take into consideration is whether you are an experienced or new dog owner, with certain breeds far more challenging than others for newcomers to the canine club. Of course, depending on your lifestyle and circumstances there's no one size fits all approach – but first time owners should consider breeds that tend to be easy to train, eager to please, and friendly. Here are 16 of the best breeds for first-time dog owners. 1 . Labrador Retriever The most popular dog in the Britain is also a pretty good choice for a first time owner. The Labrador Retriever has the perfect combination of brains, beauty and friendliness. It should be noted though that they need regular exercise and don't like being left alone for long periods of time. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Shih Tzu A perfect first pet for somebody looking for a house dog, the Shih Tzu is a friendly breed that needs little in the way of space or exercise. They are also highly intelligent and easy to train. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Bernese Mountain Dog If you are a first time owner keen to go 'extra large' then the Berenese Mountain Dog is probably your best option. Easy-going, eager-to-please and gentle, their intelligence makles them relatively easy to train. They are good with kids too, and surprisingly lazy. Their hair is the only part of thme that's fairly high maintenance - there's a lot of it and they need regular brushing (while your carpet will need regular hoovering). | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Small, affectionate, and adaptable, Cavaliers are easygoing lap dogs. They're great with kids, enjoy cuddling, and don't require intense exercise, making them perfect for first-time or flat dwellers. | Canva/Getty Images Photo Sales

Tacoma police rescue dog from precarious place at Chinese Reconciliation Park
The Tacoma Police Department rescued a dog from a precarious place at Chinese Reconciliation Park. It happened last week. The department says the Bernese Mountain Dog wandered from its yard, over to the park, and somehow ended up in some wet rocks and couldn't get out. 'I barked for help (politely, of course), and before I knew it, these amazing humans in uniforms showed up,' the department jokingly narrated for the dog in a social media post. Police say someone walking nearby heard barking. When they realized what happened, they called police. Officers first tried using a leash to coerce the dog out of the rocks, but it was no use. As a second option, they carefully hoisted the pup onto a tarp with handles and carried it to safety. The department took the dog to the humane society, where it was reunited with its humans again. Mass. nonprofit covers cost of emergency c-section for struggling dog
BOSTON (WPRI) — The Angell Animal Medical Center celebrated a major milestone earlier this year. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) announced Tuesday that the Angell Animal Medical Center has saved more than 1,000 dogs thanks to KodiakCare, a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to pet owners struggling with high veterinary costs. The 1,000th dog saved by Angell Animal Medical Center was a 7-year-old mixed-breed named Kamali, who needed emergency care while giving birth to five puppies back in February. Angella Pucillo-Driscoll, Kamali's owner, had originally planned for her to give birth at their New Hampshire home. 'Kamali labored for a full day,' Pucillo-Driscoll recalled. 'After hours of panting with no progress, we tried to move Kamali, but then the first puppy got stuck in the birth canal, and it was really scary.' 'That's when we knew we needed the kind of advanced care we could only get at Angell, so we packed up the car and headed to Boston,' she continued. Dr. Kiko Bracker, director of Angell Animal Medical Center's Emergency and Critical Care Department, said he knew as soon as Kamali came in that she would need an emergency c-section. 'There's a big risk of infection with cases like Kamali's,' Bracker explained. 'Unfortunately, these [procedures] can be really expensive.' Pucillo-Driscoll applied for financial assistance through MSPCA's Pet Care Assistance fund. It was then that KodiakCare stepped up and covered the remaining costs of Kamali's treatment. 'As doctors, we want to do everything that we can to save patients like Kamali who come through our doors in distress,' Bracker said. 'We're really grateful for funds like these that allow us to focus on getting pets the care they need, instead of having difficult conversations about possible surrender or euthanasia.' Angell's veterinary staff assisted Kamali in giving birth to five health puppies in the early hours of Feb. 8, according to the MSPCA. 'We founded this organization in honor of our late Bernese Mountain Dog, Kodiak,' said Glenn Shapiro, who launched KodiakCare with his wife, Nancy. 'Kodiak received the best possible care at Angell and ended up living nine years longer than expected.' 'All pet parents should have that chance, regardless of their position in life, and that's why we started this organization,' he added. The MSPCA said Pucillo-Drisoll has already found adopters for four of Kamali's puppies and plans to keep the fifth. Anyone interested in donating to KodiakCare can do so online.
