Jefferson depot continues to improve, develop

JEFFERSON — Jefferson Depot Village structures have been improved in many ways during the last year, board President Bretteny Berrier said. A major project is nearing completion, as the roofing project on a historic house brought to the village from Andover several years ago is almost finished. She said it was a major priority, so the inside of the building could be protected. The house took two years to dismantle and transport to the depot, with the project starting in 2020 and ending in 2022. JDV board members have been working on it for many years as fundraising was conducted, volunteers were found and grants secured. The depot itself has seen positive changes in the last year as well, with both the inside and outside of the building getting a paint job, and new flooring inside the building, Berrier said. 'Last year, we saw a huge increase in our grants,' she said. 'We had five or six grants.' She said total income for the year, including grants, donations and income from programs tallied $54,323. She said village leaders will continue to seek donations and apply for grants to complete the house, and continue to maintain the many buildings on the campus. 'We are excited we have a lot of fun things happening,' Berrier said. She said there will be several major fundraisers coming this summer, with the annual strawberry festival planned for June 7 and 8. She said Early America Live, a re-enactment of the 1890s, is back on the schedule for 2025. The entire village is open for area residents and out-of-town visitors to tour the buildings and get a feel for life in the 1800s. Berrier said the board of directors is looking for sponsors for the festival. She is expecting work at the village in April and May, as volunteers will be working on the exterior of buildings and keeping the grounds in tip-top shape. She said people interested in assisting or donating can find more information on the Jefferson Depot Village Facebook page.

US intelligence needs overhaul to stop Beijing forcibly taking Taiwan: report

Published: 5:05pm, 14 Feb 2025 A Washington-based think tank has proposed a major overhaul of the US Intelligence Community's early-warning capabilities to deter the People's Liberation Army from forcibly taking Taiwan. The proposal written by Scott Berrier, a retired US Army lieutenant-general, and published on Thursday by the Atlantic Council, advocates for a real-time, integrated intelligence system that spans all domains – space, cyber, air, sea and land. 'The side that sees first decides first, and the one that acts first will have the advantage,' Berrier asserts in the brief, emphasising the need for speed and integration in modern warfare. The proposal suggests a fundamental shift in how intelligence is collected, analysed and shared. It urged the 18 independent agencies within the community – which includes the intelligence arms of each branch of the US military as well as bodies such as the CIA, FBI, National Security Agency , Treasury and Department of Energy – to 'overcome silos that hinder national security'. 02:47 Trump won't let Europe turn Uncle Sam into 'Uncle Sucker', US defence chief says Trump won't let Europe turn Uncle Sam into 'Uncle Sucker', US defence chief says Berrier, who is a senior fellow at the think tank's Indo-Pacific Security Initiative, highlights the critical need for a unified, agile approach to intelligence that uses advanced technologies such as AI to enable faster, more accurate decision making. This was crucial because the People's Liberation Army (PLA) used cyber power rather than traditional firepower to pressure Taiwan, the report said.
