The iconic soap star, who dazzled in a cobalt blue suit, took to the stage to collect her award. But the TV favourite stunned fans and those in the audience with her cheeky speech. Patsy said: "Knock knock... "Listen I haven't prepared a speech because I thought Jack [P. Shepherd] was going to win," the camera then cut to the David Platt actor who pulled a surprised expression. Patsy continued: "To be able to be funny and all of what we've seen tonight, is nothing short of a miracle really. "I want to thank Shona McGarty for leaving, because if she hadn't have left, I wouldn't have come back. "I wasn't expecting that and I'm so glad I did because I stayed for the 40th and that was really where we celebrated a woman's vagina. "I think vaginas have always been funny." The star then burst out laughing, with Michelle Collins, who plays Cindy Beale, looking mortified. Ian Beale actor Adam Woodyatt also looked gobsmacked at his co-star's remark, while host Jane McDonald was left shell-shocked. The reference was clearly in relation to Sonia Fowler giving birth in the pub during the live 40th anniversary episode. Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy, welcomed baby daughter Julia during the Queen Vic's explosion. The scene saw her give birth with the help of Bianca and Lauren Branning, portrayed by Jacqueline Jossa. Despite leaving some stunned by her speech, the audience took it in good humour and were in hysterics. Patsy continued: "All jokes aside, coming back to EastEnders after quite some time has been the most amazing experience for me. "I'm beyond grateful, I'm not going to cry because it's a comedy award, but you have no idea what a gift it has been for me to come back." Following her speech, Jane returned to the stage. Lost for words, the host said: "I don't know quite what to say. How many times can you say vagina in one speech." EastEnders swept the board after collecting a total of eight gongs in its 40th anniversary year - more than double its nearest rival, Channel 4's Hollyoaks who got three awards. EastEnders was awarded Best Soap after its huge live episode and anniversary week which saw Anita Dobson return as Angie Watts and Martin Fowler killed off in the arms of his love, Stacey. It was certainly not the only award that they picked up with actress Lacey Turner receiving the trophy for Best Leading Performer ahead of her impending exit from the show. The 40th anniversary also managed to clutch the Scene of the Year thanks to Angie's shock return. Steve McFadden a won a trophy for Best Dramatic Performance as Phil Mitchell but did not attend the ceremony with Angela Wynter and Rudolph Walker also receiving prizes as Patrick and Yolande - beating Corrie fan favourites Lisa Swain and Carla Connor, affectionately known as Swarla, to the Best On-Screen Partnership award. The Walford based soap also collected the Comedy Performance gongs and Villain of the Year. In a major blow to Coronation Street, only David Neilson picked up the Outstanding Achievement Award as Roy Cropper which was presented to him by by his on-screen wife Julie Hesmondhalgh.

The message read: "We're sorry for the disruption." Fans were quick to take to social media with their complaints. One wrote: "What the hell is going on ? Will it ever come on?" Advertisement A second said: "Oh dear looks like we got major problems on ITV1." A third commented: "Well, I guess I am not watching The Soap Awards on ITVX. What's going on?" Despite the delay, the ceremony, which was filmed earlier this week, kicked off with Jane McDonald hosting for a second year. It comes after Coronation Street were brutally snubbed at the awards as they failed to pick up any of the previously announced awards at this year's ceremony. Coronation Street and Emmerdale humiliated at British Soap Awards as rival soap wins EIGHT gongs But it was bad news for Coronation Street as the programme suffered a devastating loss after managing to bag just the specially curated Outstanding Achievement Award which went to Roy Cropper star David Neilson. The show failed to secure wins in any of the main panel or viewer-voted categories amid ITV's ongoing cash crisis and the mass cast exodus at the soap over the past six months. Its ITV counterpart Emmerdale also faced a crushing blow ahead of the impending ITV schedule changes which will see 30 minutes worth of each programme cut a week from January 2026. EastEnders bags bittersweet win as best soap at BAFTA TV Awards after ITV rival Emmerdale forced to withdraw from nominations

EastEnders bagged a bittersweet win as Best Soap at the BAFTA TV Awards after ITV rival Emmerdale was forced to withdraw from nominations. The BBC drama beat Casualty and Coronation Street and scooped the prize at the prestigious ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday. Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw accepted the award and thanked fans for their support over the last 40 years, while cast members stood proudly beside him on stage. However, the win comes after ITV competitor Emmerdale withdrew its entry for the award back in March after one of the scriptwriters was found guilty of domestic abuse. Bosses at the channel pulled out of the nomination after writer Martin Fustes pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend. According to The Sun, ITV felt it was inappropriate to be included after the recent developments, as the soap has recently featured and won acclaim for a storyline about domestic abuse. A spokesperson for ITV and Emmerdale told MailOnline at the time: 'ITV and Emmerdale have taken the decision to withdraw from the Soap category from this year's awards. 'This is in consideration of recent news involving a member of the scriptwriting team.' The Sun reported how BAFTA members had been told that anyone who had voted for Emmerdale had to recast their votes following the withdrawal. The top writer for Emmerdale told his partner he wanted to kill her and chop up her face, a court heard. Martin Fustes, 47, assaulted the terrified woman and the made vile threats on January 27 after a late-night argument at their home in Beverley, East Yorkshire, where they lived with their children. She feared she was going to die after abusive boyfriend Fustes turned nasty and began suffocating her by putting his hands over her nose and mouth and told her he wished she could be set alight and hanged from a tree. Fustes admitted assaulting the woman, causing actual bodily harm, and an offence of intentional suffocation when he appeared before Hull Magistrates' Court on January 31. At his sentencing at Hull Crown Court on February 28, he was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, 150 hours unpaid work, 15 days rehabilitation and a 26-session probation service domestic abuse programme. He was also ordered to pay £2,000 compensation, £150 in costs and was given a ten-year restraining order. Fustes has been an Emmerdale writer for at least 10 years, according to a fan page of the ITV soap, and is understood to have even penned domestic violence storylines -a key focus in the soap over the last 12 months. An ITV spokesperson said at the time: 'We were shocked and appalled to learn about the recent court case involving Emmerdale writer Martin Fustes. Mr Fustes is a freelance writer and he has been informed that he will no longer be writing for Emmerdale. 'Everyone at ITV and Emmerdale abhors domestic abuse, which is why we have been highlighting the issue in a major storyline over the last 12 months. The Emmerdale production team were not aware of these charges against Mr Fustes until we were alerted over the weekend.' 2025 BAFTA TV AWARD WINNERS AT A GLANCE Drama Series - Blue Lights (BBC One) Limited Drama - Mr Bates vs the Post Office (ITV1) International - Shogun (Disney+) - WINNER Scripted Comedy - Alma's Not Normal (BBC Two) Entertainment - Would I Lie To You?
