Rocker Says Tribute to Late Guitar Legend Came ‘Straight from the Heart'

took to Instagram on Monday, May 27 to share a video of himself discussing his recent tribute song to his former band mate . Hagar has previously said that he wrote the song 'Encore, Thank You, Goodnight' with the late guitarist in a dream. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 In the new video clip, which Hagar explained in the caption of his post was shot on the last day of his band's rehearsals for their recently completed Las Vegas residency, he spoke about the inspiration for the song. 'I just thought, I want to say this from the bottom of my heart, that I wanted to do something about Eddie,' he explained. 'From the second I heard he passed, I was waiting for the family and everybody to get together and do the tribute. I mean, hey, I'm alive. I can sing the songs. We got bands. We can all play. And it never happened.' Hagar, however, noted that other members of Van Halen did do their own tributes of sorts, including Eddie's son with , , who played bass in the latter incarnation of the band before he eventually formed his own band, Mammoth WVH. 'I just love what Wolfie did, how he held his record and then came with the 'Distance,' which is the most soulful thing. I mean, it breaks my heart still today when I hear it. It's wonderful. So beautiful,' Hagar added. He also praised the band's former drummer, , although he still holds a grudge against Hagar.'Even Al, even though he left me out of the book, I'm OK with that,' Hagar added. 'Go read my book if you want to know what happened in my era, but you know, [Alex's book Brothers] was a tribute to his brother… It was like a love letter to Eddie.' Hagar then explained how he came up with his new song. 'It's been a long time coming for me. I've been thinking I have to do something someday. So this came, you know, from the dream a couple years ago.' He added that his current guitarist on his Best of All Worlds tour, Joe Satriani, helped him finish the song. 'I just love the way the fans are really understanding it. It's a love letter, too. It's a thank you. It's a tribute. It's a praise. It's everything. It's straight from the heart and it's to kind of close that chapter a little bit,' he explained. Hagar added that he'll 'go out and play the songs for the rest of my life,' but wanted to say it again, 'Eddie, thank you. Thank you for everything. Love you, miss you.' Grateful Dead legend reunites with Sammy Hagar in Las Vegas

Two Bay Area rock icons reunited for a surprise performance in Nevada this week. Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir joined former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar during a Las Vegas concert on Wednesday, May 7. The two performed the 1973 song 'Bad Motor Scooter,' which Hagar performed in his pre-Van Halen days with his former band, Montrose. The Salinas-born singer then took to social media to thank Weir for his time. 'Bob is fearless. He's always willing to take chances with music of any kind,' Hagar wrote in an Instagram post shared on Thursday, May 8. 'This was a blast.' The post was accompanied by videos and photos of the two rockers rehearsing backstage and then performing together in front of the crowd. It ends with a clip of them backstage after the show, where Hagar says, 'I hope he makes it to rehearsal tomorrow,' referring to Weir who is right beside him laughing. The Red Rocker also shared a separate post containing two photos of them onstage, explaining in the caption that 'Bad Motor Scooter' was the first song he ever wrote. Hagar is currently wrapping up his Best of All Worlds residency at the Park MGM, which began on April 30 and is set to run through May 17. Meanwhile, Weir was in the desert city to resume his Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company's residency at the Sphere, which is scheduled to conclude on the same day as Hagar's stint. Weir and Hagar previously performed together in 2023 for the Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco alongside guests such as folk singer and longtime San Mateo County resident Joan Baez, blues guitarist Taj Mahal, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and singer-songwriter Chirs Isaak. The two were photographed together backstage at the Pollstar Awards, hosted at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Weir was in attendance with his Dead & Company bandmate John Mayer to accept the award for residency of the year for their stint at the Sphere, while Nicks was inducted into Pollstar's Live Hall of Fame.

Sammy Hagar's New Song "Encore. Thank You. Goodnight." Was Inspired by a Dream About Eddie Van Halen

Sammy Hagar has been dreaming about his new single. The new song "Encore. Thank You. Goodnight." released on Friday, April 25, was inspired by a dream the legendary rocker had involving his Van Halen bandmate, the late Eddie Van Halen. "I can't wait for the world to hear this very special song Joe and I wrote as a long overdue thank you to Eddie Van Halen for the music, the good times, and the dream that inspired this track, 'Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,' " Hagar, 77, wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, April 22 — just days before the single's debut. 'About two months ago, I had this dream and Eddie came. We were in a room like this, [with] a bunch of people around. It was just like he'd been gone. It was not like he was passed, but he had just been out of my life and we hadn't seen each other for a while," Hagar said at the time. "He's going, 'Man, let's write some music!' I said, 'Yeah, f–-- it, man. Here, let's go!' " he continued. is now available in the Apple App Store! Hagar told the publication that in his dream, Van Halen showed him a guitar "lick" that he had last heard during the 2004 reunion tour. "He did this harmonic thing and he slid it up to a chord, like a slide guitar. We wrote a song with that lick," Hagar recalled. "I remembered it. I got up in the morning and I wrote the song. It's called, 'Thank You.' I used the f-----' lick that he showed me in the song. I told Jason [Bonham], 'I just really don't know what to say lyrically,' " he continued. At the time, Hagar had "goosebumps, head to toe," recalling the dream. "So I wrote it [about that experience], and we'll do that song someday." Fast-forward to 2025, and the song is here. He added, "It's not meant to be anything more than a thank-you — with love, with respect, and with one hell of a guitar solo. Joe brought in that big, emotional, guitar-driven energy that feels like Eddie's spirit but is entirely of Joe's creation." "With Michael Anthony's thundering bass and stellar Van Halen-esque background vocals and Kenny Aronoff's relentlessly powerful driving rhythms, the song really came together on all levels," Hagar continued. The new song, with its accompanying music video dropping on Sunday, April 27, comes days before Hagar kicks off his Best of All Worlds Las Vegas residency on April 30. "Encore. Thank You. Sammy Hagar says his new song was made during a dream visit from Eddie Van Halen

Sammy Hagar got some help from beyond the grave when writing his latest single. The Bay Area rocker claims that 'Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,' came to him in a dream that featured Eddie Van Halen, who died in 2020. It was written 'as a long overdue thank you to Eddie Van Halen for the music, the good times and the dream that inspired this track,' Hagar declared in an Instagram post about the song on Monday, April 21. The Mill Valley resident said the track has been in the making for roughly three years. 'About two months ago, I had this dream and Eddie came,' he told Ultimate Classic Rock in 2022. 'He's going, 'Man, let's write some music!' I said, 'Yeah, f— it, man. Here, let's go!' Hagar went on to describe that during the jam session in his dream, his former Van Halen bandmate 'did this harmonic thing and he slid it up to a chord, like a slide guitar. We wrote a song with that lick. 'I remembered it. I got up in the morning and I wrote the song. I used the f—in' lick that he showed me in the song,' he concluded. Now, the Red Rocker is finally ready to share the track with the world. The song is set for release on Friday, April 25. Eddie, who served as the rock band's guitarist, died during the pandemic due to ongoing complications from throat cancer. He and his brother Alex co-founded Van Halen in 1972, and Hagar served as lead singer for more than 10 years. Hagar was booted from the group in 1996 after a public fallout with Eddie, but the two made peace shortly before Eddie's death. Most of Hagar's Best of All Worlds band — Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Kenny Aronoff — have now come together to record the special track in honor of the late rocker. Last year, Hagar launched the Best of All Worlds tour — a nod to Van Halen's 2004 Best of Both Worlds Tour — to celebrate Van Halen's legacy. Hagar, who has lived in the Bay Area for nearly 50 years, has a plaque in his honor on San Francisco's Bammies Walk of Fame and owns a recording studio in San Rafael.
