2,000 4th graders attend free Japanese drum show at Coronado Theatre
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — More than 2,000 local 4th grade students were treated to a free performance of 'Yamato: The Drummers of Japan' at the Coronado Performing Arts Center.
The show was part of the Friends of the Coronado's 'Reach for the Stars' project, which aims to bring cultural arts performing acts to the theater each year, for children to see.
It has been an initiative since 2001.
Friends of the Coronado Director Beth Howard said, 'It's a chance for the children to not only be in this beautiful Coronado and see a world-class, fully staged performance. It's to experience a different culture. And taiko drumming has a deep history in Japan… It dates back to the 5th century. It's about celebration. It's about rejuvination. It's about building spirit for the Japanese people over hundreds of years.'
The Coronado is hosting a free performance of 'Yamato' tonight at 6:30 pm. that is open to the general public.
