Newton moves forward on bike path extension along Sand Creek

NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) – The City of Newton is moving forward with a planned bike path extension along Sand Creek. On Tuesday, the Newton City Commission approved issuing a request for qualifications to engineering firms for the project design. The project will extend the bike path from the Sand Creek dam to SW 14th Street, creating a continuous trail from Sand Creek Station Golf Course to Bethel College and providing access to Rhoades Wetland Park. Community steps up to create pep band with no band teacher In January, the Commission accepted $3 million in grant funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The federal Carbon Reduction Program will cover 80% of the $3.6 million project cost, with the City of Newton funding 20% ($728,000). The design will likely take several months due to creek crossings, right-of-way acquisition, and coordination with BNSF Railway, the city said in a newsletter. KDOT expects to bid the project by September 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Newton comes together for teen with blood cancer

NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) — A community is coming together to support a Newton teen diagnosed with blood cancer. Bethel College athletes hosted a cheek swab drive Wednesday and continued Thursday evening. It's all to find a bone marrow match for Johnna Hulett. Abby Koontz is a freshman at Bethel College and graduated from Newton High, just like Hulett, who has acute myeloid leukemia. That's why it's important for her to help people register to be donors. 'She's younger than us, and she's going through this terrible thing that no one should ever have to face, and so we should just do whatever we possible can,' said Koontz. One hundred swabs were passed out, and as of Thursday night, all were completed. The kits are put in envelopes and sent to DKMS, an international nonprofit bone marrow center, in hopes that Hulett can be a match. Missy Green has sons who attend the same school as Hulett. Ava Jones: I'm going to beat Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma 'It was super simple, three swabs for 60 seconds, and then off and away it goes easy on my side,' said Green. 'Just supporting local residence, obviously someone who's local from a high school that my kids are from, so I'm hopeful that they find a match, man; if you could help somebody out like that, why wouldn't you?' The only cure for Johnna is a stem cell transplant. 'The goal would be for someone that swabbed at Bethel College to be the donor. That would be amazing so that she could recover and find a cure,' said Koontz. A simple process that Abby hopes can make all the difference. 'The ultimate goal is to save someone's life.' Hulett's volleyball coach, Jamie Dibbens, urges continuous prayers and support. The Newton community, she says, has done great with that so far. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
