LI man arrested for arson after Memorial Day house fire draws 100 firefighters

A Long Island man was arrested late Monday night following a house fire that killed three pets and mobilized dozens of firefighters in Plainview, authorities said. The Memorial Day blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. at a home on Eileen Avenue, News 12 Long Island reported, citing the Nassau County fire marshal. Nearly 100 firefighters from six different departments battled the fire, which was mainly concentrated in the back portion of the residence, according to Bethpage Fire Department Chief Francis DeBobes. 'We had a fire out the rear of the house, the entire rear of the house, and coming out the front door,' DeBobes said. Later on Monday, the Nassau County Police Department arrested 40-year-old Jahan Kia in connection with the fire. Kia, who's described as a tenant of the residence, is charged with arson, criminal mischief and animal cruelty, online court records show. He's believed to have started the fire in the basement stairwell. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes, officials said. While no residents were injured during the blaze, two dogs and one cat were reportedly killed. Two firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation and burns to their hands. Kia is scheduled to be arraigned in Nassau District Court on Tuesday. Under New York law, a person convicted of third-degree arson — defined as 'intentionally [damaging] a building or motor vehicle by starting a fire or causing an explosion' — can face up to 15 years in prison.

Mercedes smashes through Long Island home, leaving trail of damage in its wake

A dark-colored Mercedes-Benz crashed into the side of a home in Hicksville on Long Island Saturday, smashing a wall, breaking a gas line and coming to rest in a living room. First responders, including members of the Bethpage Fire Department, were summoned to a West Street home at around 4:30 p.m. They arrived to find the luxury automobile had come to rest halfway into the home. Photos taken at the scene showed the car's driver's side door removed. Inside the damaged home, the Mercedes could be seen surrounded by, and covered in, splintering debris. The name of the female driver was not available at press time. The Post could not confirm a woman inside the home at the time of the crash sustained injuries. She was, however, taken away in an ambulance. 'This car came passed me and startled me because it was so close,' explained witness Wayne Burke. 'She accelerated through, bounced across the road and went through two properties, and fully went into the house. 'It was almost like a video game,' Burke added. 'The car hit the curb, went in the air, bounced two or three times, and entered the house and disappeared. It was surreal.' Neighbors reported detecting a strong gas odor in the area soon after the crash. Burke told The Post he could hear screaming coming from inside the home, but wasn't sure if it was the driver or someone else in the home. It was unclear what caused the crash. The Mercedes also clipped a trailer and two jet skis parked in the driveway before crashing through the wall. A Suffolk County Police spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
