Ashley Hatch's goal the difference as Spirit defeat Reign
Ashley Hatch scored her sixth goal of the season as the Washington Spirit defeated the host Seattle Reign 2-1 Friday night in a National Women's Soccer League match. Croix Bethune also scored for the Spirit , who improved to 5-0-0 on the road. Shae Holmes tallied for Seattle , which was outshot 17-7, including a 4-2 edge in attempts on target. Hatch's goal off a counterattack in the 35th minute broke a 1-all tie. Gift Monday took a long pass down the left wing and dribbled into the penalty area before sending a cross to Hatch, who redirected the ball into the net from 3 yards out. Hatch is third in the NWSL in goals, trailing Orlando's Barbra Banda and Gotham FC's Esther Gonzalez. Bethune opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a similar play. Casey Krueger's cross from outside the top left corner of the 18-yard box took one bounce off the turf before Bethune outmuscled a defender to poke the ball into the net from close range. The Reign tied the score in the 17th minute. Madison Curry's cross from the right wing pinballed off three Washington defenders before falling to Holmes at the top of the 6-yard box near the far post. Holmes lifted a left-footed shot over charging goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury. Seattle nearly tied it in the 85th minute on Jess Fishlock's header off a corner kick, but Kingsbury got a hand on the ball and it deflected off defender Tara McKeown along the goal line. The Spirit had a goal called back in the seventh minute after Monday tapped a rebound into the net following a leaping, one-handed save by Seattle goalie Claudia Dickey. A video review determined Monday was offside on the play. Field Level Media

Myrtle Beach mayor, challenger say ending year-round paid parking worth another look
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Two candidates for Myrtle Beach mayor say they're willing to take another look at whether continuing year-round paid parking in the city is viable. After years of free parking during the so-called offseason for tourism, the city made the switch to charging year-round in November 2023, even though some businesses predicted it would keep nonresidents away. The issue returned to the forefront recently when Mark Kruea, the city's longtime public information director, announced his campaign for mayor. Kruea said he would take a look at year-round paid parking and whether 'it is a disincentive for people to go downtown.' News13 asked Mayor Brenda Bethune about the topic Thursday night as she kicked off her re-election campaign at The Hangout at Broadway at the Beach. She is seeking a third consecutive term in office. 'We've actually already talked about that with council, and with management and staff,' Bethune said. 'So we've already talked about that. We are looking at that, yes. We all agree that we need to do what we can to help our businesses.' On Friday, Bethune went into more detail on the topic in a statement to News13, saying the discussions have focused on returning 'free parking in the core commercial and boulevard areas' from November to February. 'It would require a change in our current ordinance to give the manager the authority to make a change without council's approval,' she said. 'This is something that is being actively worked on by staff and management. It will be discussed in our May workshop if not sooner.' The city's nonpartisan election is set for Nov. 4. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. Incumbent Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune announced during an event on Thursday night her plans to run for mayor in November. Craft brewers see opportunity to encourage buying local over U.S. tariff threat
There's a thirst brewing for truly Canadian goods following the threat of 25% tariffs coming from south of the border. And that includes beverages like craft beers. Tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump on Canadian goods entering the U.S. and an immediate response by the federal government with reciprocal import tariffs on American goods would have a negative effect on local craft brewers. For now, there is a reprieve until March, although Trump's tariff threat remains. The last few days have awoken Canadians to think more about buying local and that our economy needs further support, said Scott Simmons, the CEO of Ontario Craft Brewers. 'As Ontarians and Canadians, there are so many ways by supporting — in our case — Ontario-owned businesses,' he said. 'Those dollars stay in our communities, in our towns and in our province. They create jobs.' From Musk to mushrooms, Canadian buyers let money do the talking amid tariff turmoil Ministers call on Washington lawmakers to scrap tariff threat completely Tariffs threaten integrated Canada-U.S. food supply chains: Industry groups Simmons pointed out that about 11% of Ontario's beer market is produced by craft breweries, which also account for 80% of the province's jobs in the industry. 'Imagine if by supporting local we could double that number from 11% to 22%, what would happen to the jobs? Not to mention, hundreds of millions of dollars in economic benefit to our province,' he said. 'Our industry is just one example. I think all of us as Ontario citizens can do a much better job to look at the products we're purchasing and make sure that they're manufactured by an Ontario-owned business.' Bromlyn Bethune, president of Steam Whistle Brewery, said the company is set to mark 25 years in business next month as a craft brewer and sources most of its product inputs in Canada. She said craft brewers in general are likely to be hit hard if tariffs are imposed. 'In the world of brewing, there are so many key inputs that would impact all of us, big and small, whether that's paper pulp, aluminum, chemicals, just ingredients for brewing,' she said. 'I think everyone in the brewing industry is going to be impacted.' However, there's no time like now to celebrate Canadian beers, Bethune said. 'I have never seen truly such nationalism in my career, certainly for beer brands,' she said. 'I think the movement is really real. For us, we're celebrating what has been on our packaging for years and what we've been doing as a brewery in Canada.' Bethune said Steam Whistle, Toronto's largest independent craft brewery, only serves the Canadian market and has no plans to expand into the U.S. 'I love seeing Canadians supporting Canadians. We have world-class brands and companies that need to be celebrated,' she said. However, the CEO of Junction Craft Beverage Co. in the city's west end said his business would be affected as tariffs would be slapped on products as it crosses the border. 'Although we are a craft brewery and we have our own brands in Ontario, over half of our business is actually export,' Stuart Wheldon said. 'We are one of the top non-alcoholic beer producers and we have a lot of American customers.' Wheldon explained that the only product input that is imported from the U.S. is aluminum cans, so he considers Junction lucky in that respect. However, he said one of the top strategic goals of the company is to expand its business through a partner network in the U.S., while also increasing its Canadian brands here, which is already underway.
