5 Home Renovation Projects That Are Most Tariff-Proof
Even home renovation projects aren't immune to global politics. President Donald Trump's tariffs have shaken up the world economic order, and according to Better Homes and Gardens, they could cause the prices of construction and renovation materials to rise. But not every project is equally affected. 'When thinking about projects that aren't going to be as impacted by tariffs, you'll want to think about projects where the materials are typically sourced in the U.S.,' Angie Hicks, co-founder of home services website Angi (formerly Angie's List), wrote in an email. 'Many maintenance and repair projects are tariff-proof in that they are unavoidable,' explained Marine Sargsyan, staff economist at Houzz, an online platform for home remodeling and design. 'Considering that more than half of U.S. homes were built before 1980 (51%), it's no surprise that dated exterior features and core systems require attention.' Unlike elective renovations, these projects are driven by necessity. Homeowners are more likely to prioritize them regardless of rising material costs. 'We always recommend tackling maintenance projects first to help prevent surprise expenses later,' Hicks said. 'This means making sure your roof is in good shape, getting an HVAC tune-up or taking care of any plumbing issues.' 'While tariffs may impact some of the materials required to complete these projects, labor has a more significant implication on project budgets and timelines,' Sargsyan said. According to the 2025 U.S. Houzz & Home Study, some system upgrades, such as plumbing and electrical, have consistently been the second-most-frequent type of project for the past few years. 'Median spend for home system projects remained relatively stable year over year across almost all categories, with the exception of plumbing systems, for which spend jumped by 25%, to $1,500,' she added. Hicks wrote that a great example of a home renovation project that uses locally sourced materials is painting. While many American manufacturers of paint import ingredients, not all do. For example, Benjamin Moore's website states that the company makes all of its own resins and pigments in the U.S. Miller Paint is another American paint company that makes premium paints in the U.S. formulated specifically for the Pacific Northwest. 'You could also consider projects that are using locally sourced lumber for building things like shelves, cabinets and flooring,' Hicks explained. The U.S. obtains most of its lumber domestically, but it also imports a significant portion from Canada. 'The Q2 2025 Houzz U.S. Renovation Barometer found that construction professionals are most concerned about tariffs on lumber (83%),' Sargsyan explained. 'While a proposed additional 25% tariff on Canadian lumber was delayed and ultimately exempted, the dust hasn't settled and policy direction remains uncertain.' You can check where the lumber was sourced by its grading stamp, shelf tag at the store or lumberyard, or request the supplier or contractor to provide a certificate of origin. Some wood species are predominantly U.S.-grown, such as Southern Yellow Pine (SYP). You can also verify lumber origin using the FSC Search tool. 'Landscaping could be a great project as long as you're using plants and trees that are sourced in the U.S.,' Hicks recommended. Houzz found that more than half of renovating homeowners (53%) improved their outdoor spaces and typically completed nearly two outdoor projects on average. 'As we enter the summer season, it's a great time to invest in outdoor areas to extend the livable space of your home,' Sargsyan said. Ditch fabric softener for common pantry item that makes clothes 'soft and fresh'
A cleaning enthusiast has hailed a pantry staple for leaving her laundry feeling soft and smelling wonderful, all while giving commercial cleaners with their harsh chemicals the boot. Carolina McCauley let her social media followers in on her secret ingredient, which many will already have in their kitchen cupboards. Carolina has pointed out that using off-the-shelf fabric softeners can lead to residue accumulation inside your washing machine, which could end up spoiling your garb. However, by swapping it out for this everyday household staple, you're able to get snug, soft togs minus the unfriendly additives. In a fresh TikTok tutorial, she disclosed that she opts against ordinary fabric softeners when it comes to cleaning her clothes, opting instead for white vinegar to achieve that desired snuggly touch from her laundry. When it's laundry time, Carolina goes for white vinegar rather than the usual fabric softeners to keep her delicate pieces out of harm's way. Simply carry out your regular wash routine but swap out your fabric softener for a mere half cup of white vinegar, reports the Mirror. The cleaning aficionado is confident that your clothes will come out "soft and fresh" post-wash. White vinegar is touted as a natural fabric softener because it excels at dissolving residual detergent, mineral deposits, or 'body soil' such as sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells, which can otherwise make fabric feel rough and inflexible. By mixing vinegar into the washing machine's dispenser, it addresses all the issues that can make clothes uncomfortable to wear. Using vinegar in your laundry can do wonders, making whites brighter and eliminating those stubborn mildew smells along with intense sweat or other odours. It's also great at preventing pet hair and lint from sticking to your clothes. However, a word of caution – too much vinegar can cause chaos for both your washing machine and garments; overuse or incorrect use may harm fabrics or lead to corrosion. Indeed, frequent douses of vinegar could damage the rubber parts and seals of your faithful washing machine. Jennifer Kaminshi, from Affresh appliance care, warned Better Homes and Gardens: "White vinegar is an acid that can break down the rubber gaskets and hoses in your washing machine, leading to costly damage." The home advice experts at Better Homes and Gardens have also offered their advice, recommending reining in vinegar use particularly when washing different colours together. They've given a particularly strict caution against mixing vinegar with any kind of chlorine bleach. These substances combined create harmful fumes that are anything but fun at a party. Plus, stretchy materials don't take kindly to white vinegar - its acidic nature can destroy the elasticity in your fitness gear, leaving your stretchable attire disappointingly loose. The different regional foodways have always intrigued Allrecipes Allstar Sarah Kornbrek, especially after she moved from Michigan to Virginia in her 20s. How West Aussie gardeners can meet Charlie Albone
Keen Perth gardeners will have the chance to learn expert tips from leading landscaper Charlie Albone when he features as a special guest at the Perth Garden Show next weekend. The Sunday Times columnist and Better Homes and Gardens star will be at the event from Friday to Sunday and will be offering up all his green thumb and landscaping advice on the Richgro Knowledge Centre stage. The presenter said the people of Perth were very keen gardeners, one the of the key reasons he enjoys visiting. 'You know they have a real passion for it, and I love sharing what knowledge I have with them and hearing their gardening stories, and it's such a great event to come out to,' he said. 'One of my talks will be with Deryn Thorpe — a local gardener who runs a very good podcast (All The Dirt). Clarissa Feildel and Charlie Albone visit Uluru for a Better Homes and Gardens special. Credit: Supplied 'Then I'm gonna be doing a talk on gardening trends and how to keep your garden healthy and just a few things you need to be doing in the garden that make a big difference to the success of the garden.' Albone also invited readers and viewers to ask burning gardening questions in person and the expo provided a chance to meet them face to face. He is fresh from a trip to Uluru for Better Homes and Gardens, set to air on Friday next week. Joined by cooking presenter Clarissa Fieldel, the pair sampled First Nations cuisine and culture. Albone last visited the red centre 25 years ago as a backpacker. 'I think about what's happened in the last 25 years of my life since that's happened and then you think how long Uluru has been there for and it certainly does make you feel like just a small speck in time,' he said. 'It's an amazing place to go to.' Albone said many people might be surprised to know just how much plant life can grow in harsh environments like the middle of the desert. For those wanting to add a touch of the Northern Territory bush to their gardens at home, Albone recommended saltbush, native berries and coastal rosemary.
