Ludhiana: Gunshots fired at realtor's SUV, probe initiated

Panic spread in a village near Ladhowal after unidentified bike-borne assailants opened fire outside the house of a property dealer. The assailants fired twice, and both bullets struck the trunk of a Ford Endeavour SUV parked inside the premises. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident came to light only after the property dealer, Bhagwant Singh, reported it to the police on Saturday, two days after the incident, raising questions about the delay. The Ladhowal police, currently investigating the case, have described the situation as suspicious and are examining it from all possible angles. According to Bhagwant Singh's statement, the incident occurred around 12.35 am on May 29. He claimed that he was alerted by a neighbour who heard gunshots in the village. Upon checking from the rooftop, Bhagwant Singh said he didn't see anyone and went back inside. It was only the next morning that he noticed bullet marks on his car and informed the police. Inspector Gurshinder Kaur, SHO at Ladhowal police station, along with a police team, reached the site and began an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby houses is being reviewed. According to preliminary findings, the same two men on a motorcycle fired the first shot at the property dealer's gate and returned four minutes later to fire a second round before fleeing. The police have also started examining the call details of the property dealer and have involved a forensic team to inspect the bullet trajectory and impact on the vehicle. 'While no threat has been reported by the complainant, we are not ruling out any possibility. The timing of the complaint makes the case unusual,' said SHO Gurshinder Kaur. The SHO added that an FIR under sections 125 of BNS, sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms act has been lodged against unidentified accused.

Amritsar temple attack: NIA arrests two terror operatives

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said it has arrested an important associate of the two Khalistan Liberation Force-linked terror operatives who had carried out a grenade attack on a temple in Punjab's Amritsar district in March. Absconder Bhagwant Singh, alias Manna Bhatti, was nabbed on Wednesday from Akalgarh village in Amritsar district, taking the total arrests in the case to four. The attack was carried out by Gursidak Singh and Vishal, alias Chuchi, who had hurled a hand grenade at Thakurdwara Sanatan Mandir in Amritsar on March 15, as per the NIA investigation. The attack was claimed by the proscribed terror organisation, KLF. While Gursidak Singh was killed in a shootout with police following the temple attack, Vishal was arrested. Two other men, identified as Diwan Singh, alias Sunny, and Sahib Singh, alias Saba, were also arrested in the case. As per the NIA investigation, Bhagwant Singh, who was absconding since the incident, had knowingly provided shelter to Gursidak Singh and Vishal. The duo had stayed with him during the planning of the terror attack and also thereafter. The grenade used in the attack was also concealed behind Bhagwan's house with his knowledge. As per further investigations in the case RC-08/2025/NIA/DLI, Bhagwant Singh had even received terror funds in his bank account. The NIA is continuing its investigation in the case as part of its crackdown against the KLF associates in India and the terror outfit's foreign-based nodes. In a 'first attack' on a religious place in Amritsar city, close to the border with Pakistan, two assailants hurled an explosive at the Thakurdwara Temple complex, damaging its walls and shattering its window panes. The CCTV footage showed the attackers arriving at the location on a bike with a flag mounted on it. After waiting for a few seconds, one of them threw a grenade, and both fled the spot. Police believe the attack was carried out as part of a planned strategy to trigger fear amid the Holi festivities.

While the temple's wall was damaged in the explosion, a priest and his family, who were residing on the upper floor of the temple, were unharmed. The temple grenade attack came a day after three motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead Mangat Rai Manga, the district president of Shiv Sena, in Punjab's Moga district, owing to "personal rivalry".

India-Pakistan tensions hit tourism industry hard in Amritsar

India's one of the most prominent tourist and spiritual destinations, Amritsar is witnessing a sharp decline in tourist footfall amid the Indo-Pak flare-up, rendering scores of people associated with the hospitality industry jobless and without income. According to Darbar Sahib authorities, devotee footfall at the Sikh shrine has decreased by 25 per cent, while hospitality industry representatives see a dip of 80-90 per cent in hotel occupancy. Due to its proximity to the International Border with Pakistan, Amritsar finds itself at the heart of disruption, not just facing security concerns, but also experiencing an economic jolt. The hospitality industry in Amritsar has been witnessing a tourism boom for the past few years, becoming one of the most visited cities in the country. This is evident from air passengers doubling to over 20 lakh in 2022 from about 10 lakh in 2015, and the fact that hotels in the city have always remained booked. Tensions escalated after Indian armed forces early Wednesday carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke, in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam. Following this, the Amritsar airport was shut down indefinitely, halting all flight operations and leaving several passengers stranded. The airport closure entirely cut off air connectivity to the city for both domestic and international tourists. Adding to the blow is the suspension of the popular daily retreat ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border, a major draw for thousands of tourists. With no timeline for its resumption, tour operators, guides and transport service providers find themselves jobless and without income. Darbar Sahib manager Bhagwant Singh said, 'Since the escalation, the footfall at the Darbar Sahib has dropped by around 25 per cent. Tourists and even devotees from other states and abroad are unable to visit here due to the suspension of flights and affected transport services.' On Wednesday night, the Darbar Sahib, too, observed a rare blackout as a security measure. Jatinderpal Singh Moti Bhatia, a representative of the hotel industry, said, 'Hotel occupancy in Amritsar has decelerated by 80 to 90 per cent. Tourism in Amritsar has suffered a major setback. This city's economy is deeply tied to tourism.' 'This is the biggest drop we have seen in two decades. Even during the farmers' agitation at Shambhu, we didn't experience such a steep fall,' Bhatia said. 'Besides, the suspension of the retreat ceremony has affected the livelihoods of many auto and taxi drivers ferrying tourists to the border. The situation is not only alarming for security reasons but also disastrous for thousands who survive on tourism here, from hotel staff and food vendors to local transport operators,' Bhatia added.
