'Josh over hosh': Bengaluru man booked after viral video shows him cutting cake with machete

Bengaluru man booked for cutting birthday cake with machete BENGALURU: When 'josh' (fervour) got the better of 'hosh' (common sense), or so one thought. It was a birthday celebration like any other — complete with cake-cutting. Except that the cake wasn't like any other. It was shaped like a cartridge and what was used to cut it wasn't the average knife, but a machete. Result: The 'birthday boy' — in this case an autorickshaw driver named Anil Kumar — was arrested and produced in court. Police said he admitted having "acted in josh". As video clips of the cake-cutting were passed around, someone forwarded those to the jurisdictional cops at Gudibande police station in Chikkaballapur, prompting the law-keepers to sit up, take note and crack down on Kumar, a resident of Vychukurahalli. The birthday party was held on the night of May 31 at Gudibande, and Kumar was arrested Monday. Surrounded by friends, colleagues and relatives, Kumar, who had no criminal record, pulled out the machete and cut the cake, even as the guests clapped. This was followed by a cocktail party. Later, Kumar took the machete home. "Immediately after receiving the video, we booked Kumar under Section 126 of Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and produced him in court, where he was fined Rs 1,000. He will be produced before the tahsildar Tuesday, where he will have to execute a security bond, promising he will never repeat such an act or indulge in any anti-social activity," Kushal Choukesy, superintendent of police, Chikkaballapur, told TOI. What is BNSS Section 126? When an executive magistrate receives information that a person is likely to commit a breach of law, the person concerned may be slapped with a show-cause notice as to why he or she should not be ordered to execute a bond or bail bond to maintain peace for a period not exceeding one year, or as the magistrate deems fit.

Man who accused Sharmishta Panoli goes ‘missing' after multiple cases against him: Report

Wajahat Khan, the man whose police complaint led to the arrest of social media influencer and law student Sharmishta Panoli in Gurugram, has allegedly gone missing, India Today reported. Panoli, 22, was arrested by Kolkata Police on May 30 from Haryana's Gurugram based on a complaint filed by Wajahat Khan at the Garden Reach police station. She was accused of spreading communal hatred through a now-deleted video in which she used abusive language and criticised Bollywood celebrities for remaining silent on Operation Sindoor. Following her arrest, Panoli was produced before a Kolkata court and remanded in judicial custody till June 13. The incident triggered a political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticising the arrest, noting that Panoli had already deleted the video and apologised. Reports of Khan's disappearance have surfaced after multiple complaints were lodged against him in various locations, including Kolkata. Kolkata Police has received a formal complaint against 30-year-old Wazahat Khan Qadri Rashidi, a resident of the city. According to India Today, the complaint was filed by the Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad, alleging that Khan posted derogatory and inflammatory remarks against the Hindu community on social media. The complaint, addressed to the Officer-in-Charge of the Garden Reach Police Station and dated June 2, requests the registration of an FIR under sections 196(1)(a), 299, 352, and 353(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections 66A and 67 of the IT Act. It accuses Khan of using terms such as 'rapist cultures' and 'urine drinkers' to refer to Hindus. The complaint also claims that Khan employed sexually explicit and vulgar language while insulting Hindu deities, traditions, temples, and festivals. According to the letter, Khan's remarks are aimed at provoking communal discord, disturbing public order, and promoting hostility among religious communities. It calls for swift police action to avoid any escalation of tensions. Separately, an advocate lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police and Cyber Crime Unit, accusing Khan of hate speech, religious defamation, and offensive content under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and IT Act. Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that a case has been filed in the state against a man from West Bengal for allegedly insulting several Hindu deities, including Goddess Kamakhya. The Assam government has approached West Bengal for his custody, and Sarma noted, "time alone will tell how they react to the request and cooperate with us." Wajahat Khan's father said that the complainant has not been seen since Sunday night, and the family has been receiving threatening phone calls ever since Sharmistha Panoli's arrest. 'My son is innocent and secular. He cannot insult Hinduism. We have been receiving threats since Sharmistha's arrest,' Saadat Khan said during an interview with Aaj Tak, a sister channel of India Today. When asked about the complaint accusing his son of insulting Hinduism, Saadat Khan suggested that Wajahat's social media account might have been hacked. He added that Wajahat had been extremely disturbed by the barrage of abusive and threatening phone calls in recent days, with people accusing him of having ruined Panoli's life. Saadat Khan said he, too, was targeted with similar threatening calls and verbal abuse.

Man convicted in Anna University sexual assault case sentenced to life imprisonment

A Chennai court on Monday sentenced the man convicted of sexually assaulting a student on the campus of Anna University to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission, Live Law reported. The man, Gnanasekaran, has also been directed to pay a fine of Rs 90,000. On May 28, he was found guilty on all 11 charges filed against him and convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to rape and sexual harassment, in addition to sections of the Information Technology Act and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act. Gnanasekaran is accused of having filmed the student and her partner on the university campus and threatening to leak the footage to the dean and the couple's parents if they did not comply with his demands. The incident occurred on December 23, when Gnanasekaran allegedly took the complainant to a remote location where he first blackmailed her before sexually assaulting her. The first information report filed in the case stated that he had illegally detained the student for 40 minutes. Gnanasekaran, who ran a roadside eatery near the campus, was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police two days after the assault. The police had said that at least seven other cases were pending against him. The case had sparked a controversy after the FIR based on the complaint was leaked online, revealing the identity of the student. Stating that this had caused the student 'trauma and humiliation', the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government on December 28 to provide Rs 25 lakh in compensation to her. The bench also called it a serious failure on the part of the police. In addition, the High Court had constituted an all-woman Special Investigation Team to probe the case. The High Court had also expressed shock over the language used in the FIR, stating that it amounted to victim-shaming, and directed the Tamil Nadu Police to conduct a departmental inquiry into the leak. However, the Supreme Court in January stayed the High Court order on the inquiry. Advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra, representing the Tamil Nadu government, had attributed the leak to a technical glitch.

Chandigarh: High court orders FIR in case of missing law intern

Following directions from the Punjab and Haryana high court, the Chandigarh Police have registered an FIR into the disappearance of a 21-year-old law intern who went missing from the Punjab and Haryana high court premises on March 17. The order to register an FIR in the case was passed by justice Rajesh Bhardwaj on May 22, following a petition filed by Hardik Sharma's father, Inderjeet Kumar. Inderjeet Kumar, a New Chandigarh resident and professional photographer, reported his son's disappearance after Hardik, who was undergoing apprenticeship training at the high court, failed to return on the afternoon of March 17. A Daily Diary Report (DDR) was initially filed at Sector 3 police station on March 18, but no significant progress was made until the court intervened. In his complaint, Inderjeet shared details of a threatening call he received on the day of Hardik's disappearance. The caller, identifying himself as Sunil Kumar, claimed to be the father of a girl named Sania and accused Hardik of eloping with his daughter. The caller issued severe threats, saying he would 'kill him and drown him in a river'. Another individual, identified as Harvinder Singh alias Harry of Sector 127, Mohali, also allegedly threatened Hardik and warned him to stay away from Sania. Inderjeet believes that both Sunil Kumar, from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, and Harvinder Singh are involved in detaining his son at an undisclosed location. Upon the court's order, the Chandigarh Police have registered a case under Section 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities are actively pursuing leads and making efforts to locate Hardik and hold those responsible accountable.

Criminal justice system enters new era: Shah

Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that India's criminal justice system is undergoing a transformative shift towards a more secure, transparent, and evidence-based model. His remarks came during a two-day visit to West Bengal, where he inaugurated the new building of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Rajarhat, Kolkata. While addressing the gathering, Shah stated, 'The Indian government is creating a secure, transparent and evidence-based criminal justice system. It is necessary that those who stop crime should be two steps ahead of the criminals. Our criminal justice system is entering a new era.' He highlighted the essential role of forensic science in modern law enforcement and the need to continuously advance in this area to combat evolving criminal activities. Shah underscored the foresight of the central government in establishing the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in 2020, even before the introduction of three significant criminal laws – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
