Assembly By-Election 2025 LIVE Updates: Voting begins for bypolls in Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal and Ludhiana West
Ludhiana, Kaliganj, Visavadar, Kadi, Nilambur Bypolls 2025 LIVE: Five assembly seats across four states —Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab— will undergo bypoll elections today (Thursday). While in Gujarat, the Visavadar and Kadi seats will go to the polls, three other states will see one seat each hold voting: Nilambur in Kerala, Kaliganj in West Bengal, and Ludhiana West in Punjab. The results for the bypolls will be declared on June 23. Punjab and Gujarat bypolls: The BJP aims to regain an old bastion in Gujarat, but it is also hoping to clinch another seat in Punjab, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is growing steadily. Visavadar in Gujarat's Junagadh district fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani joined the ruling BJP. In Ludhiana, the seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. Kerala and West Bengal bypolls: In Kerala and West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPI(M) are viewing the bypolls as precursors to the Assembly polls slated for next year in their respective states. In Kerala's Nilambur, the bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of CPI(M)-backed Independent legislator P. V. Anvar. In West Bengal's Kaliganj, the bypolls were triggered by the death of TMC leader Nasiruddin Ahmed.

Gujarat: Bypolls In Visavadar, Kadi Assembly Constituencies To Be Held Today
Ahmedabad: Bypolls to the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats in Gujarat will be held on Thursday, where the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have put up their candidates. Votes will be counted on June 23. Eligible voters will be allowed to cast their ballots between 7 am and 8 pm, election officials said on Wednesday. The state government has declared a public holiday in both constituencies on the voting day, said the office of Gujarat's Chief Electoral Officer. It said votes would be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 294 polling stations in each constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. While the BJP has nominated Kirit Patel for the bypoll in Visavadar, Congress has fielded Nitin Ranpariya. AAP's former Gujarat president Gopal Italia is also in the fray. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP hasn't won the Vasavadar seat since 2007. Party leaders said they are hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx here. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani had defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Kadi seat in Mehsana district, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been lying vacant since February 4, following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda from Kadi, while Congress has given the ticket to Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA. Ramesh Chavda had won the seat in 2012, but lost it to BJP's Karsanbhai Solanki in 2017. Like the Visavadar, the Kadi seat will also witness a three-way fight, with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP fielding Jagdish Chavda. In the 182-member Gujarat assembly, the BJP has 161 legislators, Congress 12 and AAP four. While one seat is with the Samajwadi Party, two are with independents.

Battle lines drawn for Visavadar, Kadi assembly bypolls
Gandhinagar: With Monday as the last day to file nominations for the Visavadar and Kadi assembly bypolls, battle lines have been drawn for the June 19 contest in Gujarat. The Visavadar seat will witness a triangular fight between three Patidars nominated by the BJP, Congress and AAP in the Patidar-dominated constituency. The SC-reserved Kadi byelection will also witness a three-way contest between the BJP, Congress and AAP. Bypolls were necessitated in these two assembly constituencies after Bhupendra Bhayani of AAP resigned and joined the BJP, while sitting Kadi MLA Karshan Solanki of the BJP passed away this year. A three-way contest between Patidar candidates is on the cards for the Visavadar seat, as the BJP nominated Kanti Patel, chairman of the Junagadh district central cooperative bank (DCCB), Congress nominated Nitin Patel (Ranpariya), Bhesan taluka president of the party, and AAP nominated former state unit president Gopal Italia as its candidate. The BJP last won the Visavadar seat in 2007. In 2012, former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel won the seat on a GPP ticket; in 2017, Harshad Ribadiya of the Congress won; and in 2022, Bhupendra Bhayani of AAP won the seat. For the Kadi seat, the BJP nominated Rajendrakumar Chavda, who has held various posts in the Mehsana district unit of the party, while the Congress nominated Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA who won the seat in the 2012 assembly election. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo Jagdish Chavda, a local leader, has been fielded by AAP from the seat.
