Bhubaneswar: Odisha's Vigilance department on Friday set up a special investigating team (SIT) to probe into alleged illegal mining at Hemagiri and Koida in Sundargarh district. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the department to initiate the probe in Sundargarh, 'adopting a zero-tolerance policy against corruption', a release issued by the CMO said. The State government's action came after Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena submitted a report to the Chief Minister in this regard. 'It was alleged that more than 9,843 metric tonnes of coal have been illegally extracted from 22 mines in Hemagiri tehsil of Sundargarh district. The estimated value of illegal mining was more than Rs 2 crore,' the release stated. Extraction of manganese and iron ore has been detected from '50 illegal manganese and iron ore mines in Malda, Pataweda, Sanputuli, Kolmang and Rusivenua under Koida tehsil of Sundargarh district', it said. 'More than 20,000 metric tonnes of manganese ore and more than 1,200 metric tonnes of iron ore have been illegally extracted from these mines. The estimated value of the minerals is more than Rs 37 crore,' the release added.

BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a Vigilance probe into illegal mining operations worth Rs 39 crore in Sundargarh district's Hemagiri and Koida tehsils. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the matter. The action follows Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena's recent site inspection and subsequent report to the chief minister. "We will ensure all culprits face legal consequences, regardless of their position," Minister Jena told reporters. Initial investigations reveal unauthorized extraction of 9,843 metric tonnes of coal, valued at ₹2 crore, from 22 mines in Hemagiri tehsil. The illegal mining operations span across three villages: Gopalpur (14 mines), Ratnasora (3 mines), and Bhogarakachhar (5 mines). Officials have also discovered illegal coal storage facilities in Jamakhani reserved forest. In Koida tehsil, authorities uncovered illegal extraction of manganese and iron ore from 50 mines across five villages. The operation involved removal of 20,000 metric tons of manganese ore and 1,200 metric tons of iron ore, estimated at Rs 37 crore. Bhubaneswar: At least 15 of the 30 districts will have heliports, while a greenfield airport will come up at Paradip, according to a discussion of chief minister Mohan Chanarn Majhi with his ministerial colleagues and senior officials on augmentation of civil aviation Friday. He also discussed ways to expedite work on Shree Jagannath International Airport , Puri and upgradation of the existing airport in Rourkela. "Emphasis was laid on enhancing regional connectivity by improving key state airports, including those in Jeypore, Dandabosh, Rangeilunda, Gotama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road and Utkela," a govt officer privy to the meeting said. Also, the meeting covered development of Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre (BPAC) at Birashal airstrip in Dhenkanal. The works department was asked to expedite these development activities as the nodal agency, official sources said. The CM discussed establishing world-class aviation infrastructure for airports, helipads, and drone hubs. He emphasized improving the operational efficiency and modernization of existing airports. He directed department officers to enhance development of state-run airports, increase flight connectivity, and improve efficiency of aviation units as part of infrastructure development. The meeting discussed the reorganisation of the aviation directorate with proposals for modern infrastructure and enhanced human resources to strengthen the growing aviation sector in the state.
