Trophy kings JDT plot big shake-up despite domestic dominance

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are preparing for a major squad overhaul ahead of the new season, despite completing a clean sweep of four domestic trophies for the third consecutive year. Since their rebranding in 2013, the Southern Tigers have clinched 30 titles — 29 domestic and the 2015 AFC Cup. However, with their Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite campaign ending in the last 16, change is in the air at the club. A total of 10 players and head coach Hector Bidoglio are rumoured to be on their way out, although no official announcements have been made. The players reportedly set to leave are former Real Madrid star Jese Rodriguez, Alvaro Gonzalez, Jonathan Viera, Jordi Amat, Shane Lowry, Jorge Obregon, Anselmo Moraes, Murilo Henrique, Jalil Elias, and Enzo Lombardo. Club owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim revealed that the team's future direction will centre around youth and long-term planning. "Our plan moving forward is to bring in younger players," said Tunku Mahkota Ismail at an event in March. "The recent signings were due to injuries to existing players, and some were brought in specifically for the ACL. We wanted to see how far the team could go." He added that the squad's age profile would be adjusted to enhance competitiveness. "The new way for next year is to focus on players aged 25 to 27 and younger. The maximum age would be 31 or 32, but only if the player is outstanding," he said. He acknowledged Bidoglio's contributions but hinted at a possible change in the dugout. "Bidoglio is a good coach and very 'old school', but he's best suited to maintaining harmony in the dressing room." The Argentine coach spoke after the Malaysia Cup final last week, reflecting on the team's achievements and confirming that changes are on the horizon. "We have built something special at JDT and must continue to improve," said Bidoglio. "Changes are part of this evolution. We are always looking for new talent to strengthen the team. "The future is about adaptability, ensuring we are competitive, and continuing to raise the bar."

‘Proud and happy': Bidoglio hails JDT's fighting spirit after Malaysia Cup triumph

KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) head coach Hector Bidoglio expressed pride and satisfaction with his players' commitment after they lifted the Malaysia Cup by defeating Sri Pahang FC 2-1 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here tonight. Bidoglio said the players had shown great character throughout what had been a long and challenging season for the Southern Tigers squad. 'The players were great. I'm very happy. We had a tough and long season, working until now, and the players always played with good personalities. I'm proud and happy the players worked well,' the Argentine coach told a post-match press conference here. In tonight's final, which saw both teams reduced to 10 men after referee Razlan Joffri Ali issued two red cards, Sri Pahang stunned JDT by taking the lead through T. Saravanan's goal in the 14th minute. However, drawing on their experience, JDT managed to equalise through a penalty converted by prolific striker Bergson Da Silva in the 54th minute before sensational star Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi struck the winning goal for the Southern Tigers in the 74th minute. The victory completed JDT's historic triple treble, making them the only team to achieve the feat since Kedah's double treble success in 2007 and 2008. Meanwhile, Sri Pahang head coach Fandi Ahmad remained satisfied with his team's performance throughout the game despite ultimately having to accept the result of being crowned runners-up. He said the Tok Gajah squad was confident that they could spring a surprise tonight, especially after leading 1-0 at the start, but the loss of a player who was red-carded in the first half left them a bit shaken. 'We just told them to focus even when one man is down. They gave their 200 per cent in the first half of the match, but things just turned bad in the second half. 'JDT have quality all over, but as I said before, winning or losing is not everything for us, but we manage to show character and determination in the gameplay,' said the former player of Pahang and the Singapore national squad. — Bernama

Fandi fumes over 'questionable' decisions after Sri Pahang fall to JDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Sri Pahang coach Fandi Ahmad was left frustrated by several "questionable" decisions following their 2-1 defeat to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final on Saturday. In front of more than 56,000 fans at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Fandi refrained from openly criticising referee Razlan Joffri Ali, instead repeatedly telling the media: "You can watch it yourself." One major point of contention was Arif Aiman Hanapi's 74th-minute winner, with Fandi suggesting a possible offside. "I'm not sure. We just saw the video, and it looked like he was in an offside position. "I think so, but we're not sure. It didn't show the VAR replay, and it really upset us," he said. Fandi also highlighted another incident where Sri Pahang were preparing two substitutions, but play continued, leading to JDT's second goal. "We had two substitutes waiting, but the referee didn't stop the game. Syazwan Andik was still inside if I'm not mistaken." The Singaporean also criticised the VAR system, claiming only certain individuals were allowed to view it. However, he refused to elaborate further to avoid disciplinary action. Fandi's future at Sri Pahang remains uncertain, with his contract expiring at the end of the month. "My contract ends at the end of this month. Even the players aren't too sure what's going to happen," he said. Meanwhile, JDT coach Hector Bidoglio praised his side's hunger and winning mentality after clinching a third consecutive Malaysia Cup title. Asked about the refereeing decisions, Bidoglio was quick to dismiss the controversy. "In every final, I tell the players not to analyse. We need to win, so I don't analyse the final. "We must play with personality, character and technique. "Today, JDT were champions, and it was really amazing," said the Argentine. Bidoglio admitted it had been a tough match, pointing to the long and tough season. "We knew it would be difficult. After working for about 15-16 months, the last game is always hard. "Our players have played in the M-League, the Asian Champions League, the national team, and international friendlies. "It's been a tough season but an excellent and amazing one," he said. JDT secured victory through Bergson da Silva's penalty in the 54th minute and Arif's decisive strike after T. Saravanan had given Sri Pahang a surprise early lead in the 14th minute. The triumph sealed the Southern Tigers' historic triple quadruple, completing another clean sweep of the 2024-2025 M-League season with the Super League, FA Cup, Charity Shield, and Malaysia Cup.

Hector expects to see victors each time they've got the JDT shirt on

JDT's coach Hector Bidoglio. PETALING JAYA: Hector Bidoglio has reminded his players that wearing the red and blue jersey of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) comes with great responsibility. The Venezuelan coach said that the badge on their shirts had inspired them to win everything on the domestic stage. And they are now just a step away from making more history - completing a third straight quadruple by winning the Malaysia Cup final against Pahang tonight. 'Wearing the jersey is the greatest motivation. It makes the players give their 100 per cent every time,'' said Bidoglio. 'JDT have been great domestically and even in the region. Now we have another 90 minutes or maybe even more to complete our last mission this season.'' Bidoglio, though, is aware of the challenge Pahang can provide but he wants to focus more on what his players can do in the final. 'This will be a difficult game. Pahang are a good side and I've analysed them and how they play, but I am more concerned about my players - I want them to be at their best.''
