Mikel Arteta left red-faced as Arsenal transfer blunder comes into sharp focus

Arsenal are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window as they look for attacking reinforcements but Mikel Arteta may live to regret letting one player leave the club Former Arsenal striker Mika Biereth is now worth nearly 10 times what the Gunners sold him for, it has been claimed. The Danish frontman wasn't able to break into the first team in North London, but his form on the continent has seen his value shoot up. The Gunners accepted a £4million bid from Sturm Graz after Biereth impressed on loan last season. He only lasted a few more months there, though, before interest from Monaco allowed the Austrian club to treble their money. ‌ Biereth hasn't slowed down in the principality, where his goals have secured a return to the Champions League for Monaco. They sit third in the table with just one game to go, and can't be caught by the chasing pack. ‌ Much of that is down to Biereth's goals, leaving Mikel Arteta - and Arsenal fans - to wonder what might have been. He has scored 13 times in just 16 league appearances, with PSG's Ousmane Dembele the only player among the league's top scorers to boast a better goals-per-90 record. According to L'Equipe (via GFFN), an unnamed club is ready to fork out just under £30m for the 22-year-old off the back of those performances, leaving Monaco with a decision to make. He isn't the only Monaco star attracting interest, with Premier League clubs linked with playmaker Maghnes Akliouche and Barcelona eyeing Eliesse Ben Seghir. "Yeah, there are loads of situations... not just from Arsenal but other academies where you leave at a younger age when people don't feel like you're quite ready for the first team and you go get experiences elsewhere," Biereth told The Athletic during his Sturm Graz spell. "Then you show a couple of years later that you probably were ready. 'Making it at Arsenal isn't the be-all and end-all of someone's career. There are many ways of having a successful career outside of Arsenal.' Arsenal legend Ian Wright spoke to GFFN in March about his conversations with Biereth and recognised the Gunners' injury crisis might have ended up offering him an opportunity in North London this term. "If I'm honest it must've been something with the plans Arsenal had. Mika should've been in and around it at the moment," he said. ‌ "One of our chats early on was about him showing himself in the preseason for Arsenal and giving it his best go. But he had the bravery to go to Scotland, then Austria and now France and that is what shows he wants to be the best! "He has to be playing to prove that. His record speaks for itself. It's disappointing for Arsenal but on a human level, I'm delighted for him." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Everton Face Tough Negotiation in Pursuit of Monaco Striker

Everton Face Tough Negotiation in Pursuit of Monaco Striker Everton Consider Biereth as Forward Search Intensifies Everton's recruitment plans are already in motion ahead of what promises to be one of their busiest transfer windows in years. With contracts expiring, loanees returning, and a forward line in need of revitalisation, the Toffees are casting their net wide—and one name on the shortlist is Monaco's Mika Biereth. Advertisement According to TEAMtalk, 'Everton have shortlisted prolific Monaco star Biereth as a potential target for the summer, but it won't be a straightforward deal to negotiate.' Striker Options Running Thin Dominic Calvert-Lewin's uncertain contract situation and Armando Broja's likely return to Chelsea leaves Everton worryingly light in attack. Broja's £30m option to buy is considered too steep for Everton's current financial model. With a lack of permanent options, the club is being forced to look for alternatives with long-term upside. Enter Mika Biereth. A former Arsenal academy graduate, the 22-year-old has forged a promising career since leaving north London. Stints in the Netherlands with RKC Waalwijk, in Scotland with Motherwell, and most recently in Austria with Sturm Graz showcased a forward on the rise. But it's his recent spell in Ligue 1 that's catching the eye. Photo IMAGO 'Biereth has long been touted to become a top player in the future and is living up to his potential with Monaco, where he's notched 12 goals in 12 league games so far,' says TEAMtalk. For Everton, that sort of output—especially at a reasonable age—offers the sort of profile they desperately need. Complexities Around Monaco Deal Despite the clear interest, this won't be a simple transaction. Biereth only joined Monaco in January for €15 million and is contracted until 2029. As the report notes, 'The fact that Biereth has been with Monaco for less than half a season and is contracted until 2029 could make things difficult for Everton.' Advertisement Everton would need to submit a convincing proposal to prise him away from Ligue 1, likely exceeding what Monaco paid just months ago. It's an ambitious move, and perhaps a signal that the Friedkin Group's backing of David Moyes will come with some financial clout. Wider Transfer Options Considered Biereth isn't the only name on Everton's list. TEAMtalk reports that the club is 'keeping tabs on Genoa forward Albert Gudmundsson, who is currently on loan with Fiorentina.' The Icelandic international could offer versatility—capable of playing as a second striker or in the No.10 role, potentially filling Abdoulaye Doucouré's boots if needed. Fiorentina have first refusal at £14 million with a possible £3 million in add-ons, but Inter Milan's interest could complicate matters further if Gudmundsson becomes available. Advertisement Evan Ferguson also remains on Everton's radar, with Brighton needing to decide his future after a disappointing loan at West Ham. 'TEAMtalk understands that Everton remain admirers and still believe he has top-class potential.' Photo IMAGO Rebuild Already Underway With eight players out of contract and five loanees under review, Moyes is preparing for sweeping changes. Biereth may not be the finished article, but he represents a forward-looking addition—young, proven in multiple leagues, and hungry to take the next step. If Everton can convince Monaco to sell, and if they can present a project that entices Biereth to Merseyside, it may yet prove to be one of their shrewdest signings in recent years. Our View – EPL Index Analysis Biereth is exactly the kind of signing Everton should be targeting. He's got a great scoring record, he's young, and there's a bit of hunger in him after moving around Europe and proving himself. A dozen goals in a dozen Ligue 1 games? That's not to be ignored. Advertisement Yes, Monaco only just signed him, and yes, getting him out of a contract until 2029 won't be cheap. But this is where smart recruitment makes a difference. We can't afford to splash £30m on Broja, who hasn't shown much in his time with us, so why not take a swing on someone like Biereth who's still on the up? I'm less sure about Ferguson after his spell at West Ham. There's talent there, but he's struggled to get going. Gudmundsson could be interesting, but only if we can fit him into the system properly. Ultimately, we need goals. Calvert-Lewin is constantly touch-and-go with fitness. If Moyes wants to reshape this squad, he'll need players like Biereth—hungry, mobile, and with something to prove. Let's just hope we don't miss out again.

Biereth scores again as Monaco climb to third in France

Prolific striker Mika Biereth scored again as Monaco won 2-0 at Angers to move into third place in Ligue 1 in France. Biereth controlled Caio Henrique's pass on his chest and guided the ball home in the 77th minute on Saturday (Sunday EDT) for his 11th league goal in 11 games since joining from Austrian side Sturm Graz in January. Midfielder Maghnes Akliouche struck with a late penalty for Monaco, who overtook fourth-placed Nice on goal difference with eight rounds left after this weekend's games. The Riviera rivals meet in the next round on March 29, with the top four earning a place in the Champions League next season. After being eliminated from the last 16 of the Champions League in midweek, fifth-placed Lille lost 1-0 at Nantes despite having an extra player for the closing stages. The defeat could prove costly in the race for a Champions League spot, because Lille would drop to sixth if Lyon beat struggling Le Havre at home on Sunday. Nantes hit the crossbar three times before having defender Jean-Charles Castelletto sent off in the 74th minute for fouling forward Chuba Akpom. Persistence paid off when Mostafa Mohamed headed in Moses Simon's cross in the 83rd minute. The win means Antoine Kombouare's Nantes side move clear of the relegation zone and into 13th place. On Sunday, unbeaten PSG could move closer to another title with a home win against bitter rivals Marseille.
