Abergavenny Food Festival named among best in Europe

The event, which began in 1999, was highlighted in a list by global travel site Big 7 Travel as one of the best summer food festivals. The festival, ranking 18th out of 25, is set to take place September 20 and 21 this year. Initially started by two local farmers affected by the BSE crisis (also known as mad cow disease), the festival has grown into a major celebration of the UK farming industry. With over 200 food and drink producers, attendees can look forward to talks with top chefs, cookery demonstrations, tastings, and live music. The festival aims to transform how people perceive food and its origins, while also questioning and pushing the boundaries of farming. The Big 7 Travel list aims to provide inspiration for foodie travellers looking for a taste of local cuisine, culture, and sunshine across Europe.

And one Scots fest makes the cut, taking a top 20 spot among places like Norway, France, Spain and Greece. A Big 7 expert says: "We pulled together tips from our readers and the Big 7 Travel team, looking at everything from must-try local dishes and good vibes to great locations and how popular each festival is." The Loch Lomond Summerfest, which is being held on July 5 and 6, takes spot number 14 on the global ranking. Taking place on the banks of the bonnie loch, there's loads for the whole family to enjoy. The Big 7 team says: "The event showcases the very best of Scottish produce, and no, we don't mean deep-fried Mars bars. "Instead, there is a bounty of fresh food to be enjoyed from the surrounding national park, including freshly caught wild salmon and venison. "Fill up on local and international foods, paired with local beers, whisky, and gins. There's plenty of kids' entertainment for the little ones, plus cooking demos, talks and live music." There's also a dedicated food and drink fest at the Lomond Shores location later in the year, in September. Taking top spot in Europe is the Sardine Festival, in Portimao in Portugal in August. Explore Algarve with The Sun's Best of Beaches Love them or hate them, there's no room for sardine slander at the Algarve's beloved Sardine Festival. The Big 7 experts said: "The Sardine Festival is held to commemorate the start of the sardine season while celebrating their long, salty, delicious history. "Enjoy them the Portuguese way – place a sardine on a chunk of fresh bread, peel off the skin, eat the meat of the fish, and then finish off with the bread that's soaked up all the juices. "Extra Portuguese points if it's washed down with a cold Sagres. While sardines are the star of the show here, there's something for everyone: a mix of food options, stalls selling local handicrafts, street artists, and live music. "When the sun sets, live music keeps the energy high."

It comes as Big 7 Travel crowned the 30 best beer gardens in the UK, be it 'a hidden gem in the city or something far out in the countryside with spectacular views'. Introducing its list, the popular website says: 'Nothing sums up British culture in the summertime better than enjoying a nice cold pint in a beer garden while the sun is shining. Whether you've found a hidden gem in the city or something far out in the countryside with spectacular views, the beer garden is as much a UK institution as fish and chips or a cup of tea. Coming in at No.25 on the list is Edinburgh's own Cold Town House, which recently partnered with Aperol to transform its iconic rooftop bar with castle views. In its description of the trendy Grassmarket watering hole, Big 7 Travel says: 'From the remote English countryside to the bustling capital of Scotland, you'd be forgiven for thinking that a beer garden in such a busy centre would be impossible. However, the views from the Cold Town House in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh's Old Town are nothing short of breathtaking. Mid Wales hotel near Dolgellau named one of UK's best

A Mid Wales beer garden has been named one of the best in the UK. Big 7 Travel featured the George III Hotel in Penmaenpool, near Dolgellau, in its annual list of The Best Beer Gardens in the UK, coming in at number 23. The list features travel company's top 30 beer gardens from up and down the country. Summing up the hotel, they said: "Found on the shoreline of the Mawddach Estuary, the George III Hotel has one of the best beer gardens in Wales. OTHER NEWS: "Ideal for escaping from the bustling city centres and into the country, this pub, on the border of Snowdonia National Park, offers the best of both worlds from its quiet beer garden: mountain views to your left and lakeside views to your right. "It's along the popular Mawddach Trail, which is a favourite of cyclists and walkers, so where better to stop for a well-earned pint and some food than at the George III Hotel?" The hotel is one of only two Welsh pubs in the list with Sailors' Safety in Newport also making the running in 12th place. It was noted for its history, as well it's fantastic range of food and the view looking out over Pwllgwaelod Beach. Sunsets here are pretty spectacular, and the pub dials up the cosy-ometer with twinkling fairy lights when it gets dark. The top three in the list were the Lake View Garden Bar in the Lake District, that overlooks Windermere; The Treehouse in Alnwick; and Fortune of War in Brighton.
