A Mountain Escape to Big Bear

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, Big Bear Lake remains a year-round destination offering scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and small-town charm. We visited this mountain community in advance of Big Bear Restaurant Week — a culinary celebration running March 23-30 that highlights local eateries and invites both residents and visitors to explore the town's diverse dining scene. STAY An unforgettable trip begins with accommodations, and Loro's Lookout delivers the perfect balance of comfort and seclusion. Situated among towering pines, this cabin provides a peaceful retreat while remaining conveniently close to Big Bear Lake, Snow Summit, and the Village. The stunning A-frame features magnificent views, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private hot tub—the ideal spot to unwind after a day on the slopes. DO Big Bear offers a blend of adventure and relaxation, making it suitable for various types of travelers. In winter, the town transforms into a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Families can enjoy tubing at Big Bear Snow Play, ride Southern California's only authentic year-round bobsled at The Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, or visit Mineshaft Coaster where riders can take in panoramic views on the ascent before navigating the mile-long track at their preferred pace on the descent. A quintessential Big Bear experience involves hitting the slopes. Whether you're new to skiing or snowboarding or returning as an expert, both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit provide runs matching all skill levels. With over 400 acres of terrain, 17 lifts, and diverse groomed and park runs, Big Bear accommodates every skier and boarder. If you prefer exploring the town during daylight hours, you can postpone your mountain adventure until Snow Summit's Night Sessions. DINE To begin our exploration of Big Bear's culinary landscape, we visited Fire Rock Burgers & Brews, where we were welcomed by an energetic atmosphere and rock 'n' roll ambiance. We sampled a flight of their craft beers and their remarkable Birria Quesadilla, but the standout was their Freak on a Leash burger. This substantial creation features cheddar cheese, fried onions, applewood smoked bacon, and mac 'n' cheese, finished with beer-infused BBQ sauce—the perfect meal while absorbing the mountain town's vibrant spirit. The following morning, we started at Moonridge Coffee where we were pleasantly surprised by live music. Located in Big Bear's Moonridge neighborhood, this inviting café provided exactly what we needed before a day of skiing. We tried two seasonal offerings—Buttercup Latte (peanut butter & chocolate) and Strawberry Fields Latte (strawberry & shortbread)—both excellent. This noteworthy establishment offers numerous specialty beverages and a comprehensive food menu featuring pastries, breakfast burritos, and additional options. After skiing, we went over to Barrel 33, which provided precisely what we needed following a day on the mountain—wine. We sampled several varieties, but the highlight was their authentic Glühwein. Served warm in a comfortable mug, this German mulled wine was the ideal remedy for the cold, particularly when paired with their Pesto Chicken Flatbread. Whether visiting with friends or on a date, the relaxed environment, attentive staff, and elegant décor make Barrel 33 an essential destination in Big Bear. We concluded our culinary journey at Sweet Basil Bistro, where the hospitable staff, extensive menu, and flavorful drinks distinguished this establishment. The setting is intimate and welcoming, with menu options to satisfy everyone in your group. We tried the Blushing Martini (their interpretation of a Raspberry Lemon Drop Martini) before ordering the Lasagna Bolognese and Caesar Salad. Both the cocktail and entrées were exceptional. Fortunately, we reserved room for dessert and sampled their Tiramisu, which was so delicious we considered ordering a second serving. Don't miss the opportunity to experience these restaurants during Big Bear Restaurant Week, occurring March 23-30. This culinary event allows locals and visitors to explore special prix-fixe menus, discounts, and exclusive dishes. Whether craving hearty comfort food, fresh seafood, or international cuisine, Big Bear Restaurant Week presents the perfect occasion to indulge in the area's dining scene. Beyond excellent food, the event fosters community connection, providing an ideal reason to discover new establishments and support local businesses.
