Celebrating Mother's Day: unexpected joys with my mom-in-law

To share your views email Tracy on Image: File Mother's Day was this past Sunday, and it came with its own kind of unexpected beauty. It wasn't the usual kind of celebration – no big family gathering with my mom, no hugs (this was the most difficult part), no time spent in her presence like we're used to – because, sadly, she came down with the flu just days before. Being the ever-thoughtful person she is, she insisted we stay away so the boys wouldn't catch it. Even while she wasn't feeling well, she was more worried about everyone else. That's just who she is. It was strange not seeing her. There's something about being with your mom on Mother's Day that just anchors the whole day. But life happens, and health comes first. Usually we would spend half the day with my mom and half with mom-in-law, but this year we headed over to my mother-in-law's for the day. And honestly? Girl delivered! She went above and beyond to make the most beautiful lunch, packed with all the foods us moms love. It was such a thoughtful gesture – the kind that speaks louder than words. I brought along a pot of akni (because it's basically tradition at this point), and of course, Big Boy's favourite meat. He takes his food very seriously, and I wasn't about to risk showing up without it! The reason I am called mommy, mama Image: Selfie by mom Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Now, let me tell you about Big Boy's reaction to Mother's Day. Let's just say he had questions. Mostly about why he didn't get a gift. He did make me the sweetest card – a real masterpiece complete with a drawing of a braai and the words, 'You I love mom.' My heart melted. I asked him, 'But are you a mother?' to which he confidently replied, 'No, I'm a brother.' Then, after a second of thinking, he hit me with: 'When is Brother's Day? Because I also want gifts.' I couldn't help but laugh. Kids are the best kind of chaos. After the meal, we sat around chatting – and naturally, the past came up. My mother-in-law and I both acknowledged how, just a few years ago, this kind of peaceful, lighthearted day together wouldn't have seemed possible. We've had our rough patches, no denying that. There were times when things felt tense, complicated, maybe even a little hopeless. But here we are now – having grown, healed, and found our way into something that feels steady and real. A mother-and-daughter bond that I honestly never expected to be so strong. Who would have thought we'd come this far? I was a bit sad that I couldn't spend the day with my mom, but my mother-in-law made up for that. Image: Throwback We cleaned up together, did the dishes (a little milestone of its own), and said our goodbyes with genuine warmth. The day already felt full in the best way – but the real gift came after we got home. I was just about to kick into mom-mode again when my husband gently suggested something I didn't even know I needed. He said, 'Why don't you go lie down with baby for a nap? I'll take Big Boy to the park for a bike ride.' I didn't argue. I just smiled (maybe cried a little on the inside) and headed straight for the bed. A peaceful, uninterrupted afternoon nap? On Mother's Day? That is what I call a spoil. Honestly, I think it's what every mom secretly dreams of – a moment of stillness, rest, and quiet. And I got it. So no, this Mother's Day didn't go exactly the way I'd planned. But it surprised me with joy in all the places I didn't expect – through family, healing, laughter, and a really, really good nap. And honestly, that sounds like the perfect way to celebrate motherhood. Weekend Argus

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Work is underway to demolish the Big Boy in downtown Grand Rapids to make way for the new soccer stadium. Big Boy closed back in December of 2023 after serving up burgers on Pearl Street near US-131 since 1964. The property was later donated to the Downtown Development Authority, to be used for the soccer stadium project. When a News 8 crew stopped by Friday afternoon, crews had knocked down about half of the former restaurant's exterior. A bulldozer was working to clear out the wreckage. It's being built on an 8-acre site along US-131 near Pearl Street, which includes the land Big Boy is sitting on. It will host games for the yet-to-be-named team in the Major League Soccer Next Pro league, plus other community events like concerts and potentially other sports. The development is expected to draw some 160,000 people downtown each year and have a $408 million economic impact for the city in its first 30 years. Inside Building West Michigan Construction is expected to take about two years, with the goal of having the stadium ready for the soccer team in the spring of 2027. The development also includes an 18-story Stadium District Tower with restaurants, shops, apartments and offices, and a pedestrian skybridge at the intersection of Lake Michigan Drive and Winter Avenue that would connect the downtown YMCA and the Grand Valley State University Seward Parking Lot. The Crowd: Exhibit recalls when Bob's was big on Balboa Island's Marine Avenue

The main gallery of Balboa Island Museum welcomed the community to an opening reception viewing the local history of the 'Bob's… Home of the Big Boy' eatery present on Balboa Island and serving enthusiastic crowds in mid-century America. Lines of locals and tourists alike stepped up to the street-front counter to order their prized Bob's burger and an 'extra thick' shake. Add hot fries (perhaps with blue cheese dressing on the side for dipping purposes) and it was the ideal treat for strolling Marine Avenue and then finding a bench or cement wall on the bayfront to take in the view and share burgers. All of those memories come rushing back as museum curator and executive director of Balboa Island Museum, Tiffany Pepys Hoey, collected and assembled a photo display along with narration on the history of the fast-food business on Balboa Island before all the big chains such as McDonald's became American fast-food phenomena. Bob's, (originally called Bob's Pantry) founded by Bob Wian and his team in 1936, first opened in Glendale. It was built by Bob Peterson (father of Balboa Island local Judy Tucker); the business eventually expanded to more than 240 locations. The Wian family lived in the Los Angeles area and also had a beach home in Newport and loved life on Balboa Island. Bob's was located in the orange-colored building in the 300 block of Marine Avenue in the 1960s. Bob Wian was often in the Island store greeting visiting customers and neighbors alike. The business was sold in 1967 to Marriott Corporation. Today, four Bob's locations still serve customers in Southern California: Burbank, Downey, Norco and Northridge. Credited with creating the three-decker hamburger, Wian's sandwich quickly became a hit, but it had yet to be named. According to restaurant lore, a chubby 6-year-old named Richard Woodruff had been doing chores at Bob's Pantry in exchange for free burgers. When Wian called him 'Big Boy,' the name stuck, and the rest is hamburger history. Another regular customer, Ben Washam, a movie studio animator for Warner Bros., sketched the now famous character on a napkin. The Big Boy burger craze that ensued prompted Bob Wian to change the diner's name to Bob's Big Boy and to introduce the now-iconic Big Boy mascot. Among the special items on display in the museum gallery is an original statue of 'Bob' on loan to the museum from a local collector on Balboa Island. Balboa Island Museum staff produced a lively hamburger-themed open house as museum members and guests poured in for the recent mid-week opening catered by museum board member Cynthia Shafer, talented restaurateur and proprietor of the Royal Hen on the Island. Burgers, fries, and ice cream treats delighted the crowd sharing memories. Checking out the photographic and memorabilia display in the main Gallery were Museum chief executive Shirley Pepys, John Conners, president of the museum board and his wife, Diana; Sue Sibley, Renee Pepys Lowe and Christine Tillet. Also there were John Scudder, Jim and Erin Moloney, Andrea and Tom McElroy, Bob and Kim Miller and Jack Callahan. The exhibit will run through June and into July, open free to the public daily. Legal battle brews between Big Boy and Frisch's; And, Who's Dolly?

For years, Frisch's has been a staple in the Miami Valley, but then the restaurant got behind on rent and closed dozens of locations. Now, Frisch's is in a big legal battle with Big Boy, and Dolly's Burgers and Shakes are popping up in the former Frisch's restaurants. Dolly's recently opened in Hamilton, and Richard Shroeder was there for breakfast and returned. 'I'm here for dinner and I'll be coming as many times as I feel like it.' Shroeder is comfortable at the restaurant. He and his wife, Carol, of 58 years, often came to this place when it was Frisch's. 'They had good coconut cream pie. Good fish sandwich, too,' Schroeder said. News Center 7's Gabrielle Enright sat down with Tamer Afr, who is the CEO of Big Boy Restaurant Group and owns Dolly's Burgers and Shakes. He said, 'At the time, seeing what was really happening to the brand in this market was really sad.' Afr's company owns the rights and trademark rights for the Big Boy brand everywhere in the world except Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee. Those four states are Frisch's territory. When Frisch's got behind on rent, its landlord evicted dozens of restaurants. The company announced that two long-time Frisch's managers have acquired multiple locations. The Frisch's website shows that there are 31 locations, including three in the Miami Valley. Those restaurants are located in Sidney, Springfield, and Richmond, Indiana. Afr said Big Boy Restaurant Group terminated Frisch's brand and brand image rights. However, a judge granted Frisch's a temporary restraining order, allowing it to keep using the name for now. According to Afr, Big Boy wanted to come to the Miami Valley but needed a new name. 'So, that's why there are Big Boys in some places, and Dolly's in others. Some people may be wondering who Dolly is. 'She is a character in the Big Boy comics,' Afr said. First published in 1956, The Adventures of Big Boy often featured the bubbly blonde alongside Big Boy. Some have called Dolly, Big Boy's girlfriend and if they are a couple, are they still together, did they break up, or did the breakup? News Center 7 found a poster calling Dolly more than a sidekick and a character who could stand on her own. 'I think we're going to learn a lot more about Dolly in the near future. There's more to Dolly than we know,' Afr said. Hoping for a love story, customers like Shroeder hope Dolly and Big Boy are a couple. 'Oh, I love love. I had the best love of all,' he said. Shroader's wife, Carol, died in 2020. 'When we got married, I knew I would take care of her as long as I could. And that's what I did until we both got sick,' he said. Shroeder now comes to Dolly's for comfort food, and that reminds him of Carol. 'I think we have some similarities because again, the initial license and recipes came from us,' Afr said. News Center 7 reached out to Frisch's, and a spokesperson said they could not talk about the ongoing court battle. As for Dolly's Burgers and Shakes, Afr said we should expect to see more restaurants. 'The goal was originally to save the brand from being tarnished, and that's why we signed originally for the 55ish locations, 'Afr said. He wants to add more, and that the blonde is here to stay. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter] Dolly's is hiring now for these Dayton area locations: Kettering, Huber Heights, Wilmington Pike, Fairborn, Xenia, and Englewood. Of those, Englewood will be the first to open but no timeline has been set. Our priority continues to be serving our communities with the quality, hospitality and value they expect from Frisch's.'
