Dodgers' Roberts Praises Hyeseong Kim, Wants to Keep Him in Lineup
Hyeseong Kim has arrived. After signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a three-year, $12.5 million deal this offseason, the Korean star was stashed away in Triple-A Oklahoma City to start 2025. However, Tommy Edman's and Teoscar Hernández's injuries have forced manager Dave Roberts to reconfigure his defensive alignment, paving the way for Kim's Big League debut. After starting each of the last three games, he is making the most of the opportunity and could become a fixture in this lineup. Advertisement Here is what Roberts told reporters after the game: Kim's savvy approach and bat-to-ball skills have already translated as he has five hits over 12 at-bats, including two multi-hit performances against the Miami Marlins. Kim has also scored one run in each of his starts. Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Hyeseong Kim (6) catches a ground ball but cannot throw out Miami Marlins second baseman Ronny Simon (not pictured) during the ninth inning at loanDepot Navarro-Imagn Images It is still far too small a sample size to make any definitive decisions, but Kim's .833 OPS and 140 OPS+ are encouraging. Perhaps the most valuable element of Kim's game is his defensive versatility. He has started two games at second base, one in center field, and seen reserve time as a shortstop. If he can continue to produce at the plate and provide Roberts with a Swiss Army Knife in the field, he may need to stay in the lineup even when the team is fully healthy. Advertisement Kim's most likely path to playing time will be in a platoon role. The left-handed hitter pairs nicely with righty utility men Kiké Hernández and Chris Taylor. The Dodgers could also opt to send Kim back down to the minors once Edman and Teoscar return and ensure him regular at-bats. Kim's progress at the Major League level over the next week will be an interesting development to monitor. Red Sox Make Liam Hendriks Announcement, Other Roster Moves
It's been a peculiar start to Hunter Dobbins' MLB career. The Boston Red Sox's rookie right-hander was nowhere near the group of expected starting pitchers in spring training, but it is not yet May, and he has made two starts, both of which were impressive. Through 11 innings of work, Dobbins has a 2.45 ERA, a 3.03 FIP, and 11 strikeouts to two walks in two victorious outings. Advertisement However, with relief pitcher Liam Hendriks expected back on Saturday, Dobbins has been sent back to Triple-A Worcester, according to Chris Cotillo of Mass Live: Regular starter Brayan Bello is also expected back soon as he has progressed through his rehab stint and should rejoin the rotation. This is a tough blow for Dobbins, who has made the most of his limited opportunities, but should have earned the trust of manager Alex Cora and could find himself atop the injury replacements list. Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins (73) pitches against the Chicago White Canha-Imagn Images The Red Sox, when fully healthy, boast a staff of Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito. They also have Sean Newcomb, Kutter Crawford, and Richard Fitts, who are eligible and worthy of starts. Advertisement But, if Dobbins' performances have been any indicator, he should be in this mix. Oddly enough, Dobbins has a 10.80 ERA as a reliever for Triple-A Worcester, but his Big League success warrants more starting chances. Meanwhile, Hendriks will make his first appearance since 2023, when he was limited to five games. After overcoming non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hendriks suffered a UCL injury and needed Tommy John surgery, knocking him out for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024. He is one of the most triumphant and inspiring stories of perseverance in baseball, and hopefully, he can rediscover his form from 2019-2022 for Boston. Who will fill the open spot in the Rangers' rotation?
SURPRISE, Ariz. (KFDX/KJTL) — We are two weeks away from opening day at Globe Life Field. And that means manager Bruce Bochy has some decisions to make as far as who will make the team. Decisions, such as nailing down a starting rotation. Texas Rangers set sights on World Series with high hopes Jacob Degrom was scratched from his start Thursday, March 13, as he is battling some sort of stomach bug. Tyler Mahle was scratched from his start Tuesday, but he returned to throwing on the backfields Wednesday. Cody Bradford was scratched from his start Tuesday with elbow soreness. Bochy said Wednesday morning that Bradford would start the season on the injured list. That opens a spot in the rotation. Bochy won't commit, but he's hinting Jack Leiter will get the opportunity. Fans can be impatient, but managers — at least good ones — have learned sometimes you just have to play the waiting game. 'Growth happens in different ways. You know the speed of it with players,' Bochy said, referring to players like Leiter, the 24-year-old pitcher who was taken second overall in the 2021 draft. Leiter's major league debut didn't go well in 2024. He had six starts in nine appearances, three losses, zero wins and an 8.83 earned run average with the Big League club. But his success at the minor league level was prominent. 'We've seen that a lot of times, but you look at the body of work at the PCL and Triple-A level, how well he threw the ball, and you know, pitcher of the year,' Bochy said. 'So, he just continues to improve. And that's what we think we'll see this spring.' As 2024 pitcher of the year in the Pacific Coast League, Leiter struck out 110 batters in 77 innings for the Round Rock Express. Opponents hit just .217 against him. Now it's just a matter of getting his minor league performance to translate in the big leagues. His dad, Al Leiter, won 162 games in the majors. He didn't hit his stride until he was 30. Dad had to learn to control, something Jack is now experiencing. Now, it's just a matter of when it will all come together. 'When you have a father that's had the career that he's had in the major leagues, that's a wealth of knowledge; he's helped his growth, ' Bochy said. 'I mean, he said he was a number one pick. You know, not just because of talent, but probably because of, you know, being coached by his father. That's invaluable.' Also invaluable is adding a new pitcher to your repertoire. 'I really think we're going to see some good things from Jack this spring,' Bochy said. 'He has come up with a Two Seam he's working on, you know, that's in the early stages. And that's a pitch that you know he wants he wants to be able to use and run in on righties. That's another weapon for him.' Whether that weapon is on display in Round Rock or in Arlington, be patient. Something great lies ahead. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. MLB Spring Training weekend guide: How to watch Blue Jays, Phillies, Cubs and more
Spring Training games can assume so many different identities and purposes. For some, it's an exercise in unfettered optimism. Others use it as the magnifying glass for baseball's rookie hopefuls and the fringe players scrapping for a Big League dream. It can be blissful background noise or a weekend nap backdrop. Three weeks from Opening Day, it's really whatever we want it to be. Here is our forthcoming national TV Spring Training slate. Other games will be broadcast locally on regional sports networks. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Anthony Santander, George Springer and Andrés Giménez all played for Toronto in Thursday's warmup. Nineteen-year-old top prospect Arjun Nimmala crushed a two-run homer on Wednesday. The Phillies trotted out a full lineup of regular starters on Thursday, with Aaron Nola on the bump and Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber atop the batting order. Seattle had to appreciate seeing Julio Rodríguez swat two long balls into the desert air Wednesday, and the Cubs helped themselves to 16 runs Tuesday afternoon. Advertisement Tampa's Junior Caminero has three home runs in his first seven exhibitions, and Curtis Mead leads all batters in Spring Training hits thus far. The Rays have intriguing young talents, but they're once again hindered by a lack of investment (third-lowest payroll in MLB). Sunday's MLB Network offering of Brewers and Royals is a low-stakes wind-down for the weekend. Milwaukee added José Quintana this week; the veteran lefty was 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA for the 2024 breakout Mets. William Contreras was the designated hitter in Thursday's game. Seven-year Brewer Freddy Peralta struck out four batters in three scoreless innings on Wednesday. K.C. stalwart and former World Series MVP Salvador Pérez left Wednesday's tune-up with an eye injury. The Royals averaged just 65 wins from 2021-23, but notched an impressive 86 Ws last year and upset the Orioles in their Wild Card series. The Athletic's offseason grades Toronto Blue Jays (B) 'The Blue Jays addressed their biggest needs — a big bat, a mid-rotation starter and a late-inning reliever — but did so in less-than-thrilling fashion. They tried to get Juan Soto but settled for Anthony Santander. They were linked to Pete Alonso but didn't get him. They improved their infield, but with glove-first Andrés Giménez. They got a late-inning arm, but only after Jeff Hoffman's medicals spooked other teams. They were finalists for young phenom Roki Sasaki, but instead signed 40-year-old Max Scherzer.' Philadelphia Phillies (B) 'The Phillies did not have massive holes to fill, and their biggest move was to strengthen a rotation that was already awfully good. Their trade for Jesús Luzardo raises the ceiling of their back-end starters, lengthening the rotation even before top prospect Andrew Painter is called up to the majors. They also completed their outfield with Max Kepler and got a new closer in Jordan Romano, but they've had the same core of players for a few years now, and they'll continue to lean on that group.' Jim Bowden's 2025 report cards Seattle Mariners (D) 'Seattle hitters led the majors in strikeouts in 2024, and the Mariners did nothing to address it in the offseason. They have arguably the best five-man rotation in the AL but haven't been able to match the offense of the rest of the league's playoff teams. Despite their needs at both infield corners, they weren't able to trade for a first baseman such as Josh Naylor or sign a free agent like Christian Walker or Pete Alonso, and they didn't even make a play for star third baseman Alex Bregman. The lack of moves to improve the offense sealed the Mariners' bad grade.' Chicago Cubs (A-) 'Their high grade wasn't just because of the moves for Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly. It was aided by building strong depth in their bullpen and bench this offseason.' Milwaukee Brewers (C) 'They lost Willy Adames to the Giants in free agency and impact closer Devin Williams to the Yankees in the Nestor Cortes trade. Those departures hurt their grade. The comeback attempts of Christian Yelich, who is trying to return from back surgery, and former ace Brandon Woodruff, who is attempting to make it back from shoulder surgery, will be key to whether the Brewers finish anywhere from first to third place.' Kansas City Royals (B) 'Their best move was the trade for Jonathan India, who gives them a leadoff hitter who can get on base and create traffic for the middle of their lineup, including Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez and Vinnie Pasquantino. The Royals struck out the least of any AL team last season and should repeat that feat again this year. The signing of closer Carlos Estévez allows them to move Lucas Erceg to the set-up role, his best spot. The Royals have done an excellent job of rebuilding their bullpen over the past couple of years.'
