Nolan Brass' day was golden, Byron overpowers NIC-10 leader Freeport
FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Big Northern Conference champion Byron Tigers have been impressive all season. Saturday in Freeport they posted another impressive win by knocking off NIC-10 leader Freeport 15-2 in a five-inning Nolan Brass led the way for the Tigers. He had four hits in four at-bats including a home run. He drove in five runs. He also was the winning pitcher. He went four innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four Talbert, playing shortstop, had a pair of hits, a walk, a stolen base, he scored three runs, and he drove in two runs. Catcher Weston Auker had three hits, and he drove in a run. Dawson Criddle had a hit, a walk, and he drove in two Tigers also benefited from control issues by four Freeport pitchers. Seven Bryon batters were hit by pitches. Several of those happened with the bases loaded forcing in Knoll pitched the final inning for Byron. He did not allow a run or a hit. Knoll also had an RBI double at the plate. Byron extended its winning streak to 25 games in a row. The Tigers haven't lost a game since April 1. The Tigers' record is now 28-4. Freeport's record is now Pretzels will refocus on their main goal of winning a NIC-10 championship. They have a one game lead on Hononegah, and they lead Boylan by two games. The Pretzels have three conference games remaining. Stillman Valley and North Boone share the BNC softball championship after earning clutch wins Friday
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Big Northern Conference played in girls softball finished up Friday with co-champions. Stillman Valley and North Boone share the title after both teams picked up wins in their final Valley defeated Oregon 5-4, and North Boone defeated Byron the Stillman game in Davis Junction, the Cardinals put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead. The big blow was a two-run homerun by starting pitcher Makenzie tightened things up by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Shortstop Ella Dannhorn hit a two-run homerun. Stillman relief pitcher Kendal Noll prevented Oregon from doing any more worked 5 2/3 innings in the circle for Stillman allowing only four hits and three earned runs while striking out six batters. Addison Adler had three hits to lead Stillman's 11-hit attack. The Cardinals also stole six North Boone's win over Byron, third baseman Khloe Osborne had three hits including a homer, and she drove in five runs. Shortstop Hayden Staver and leftfielder Avarie Torres also had three hits apiece. Pitcher Courtney Troutt went all five innings before the run-rule kicked in. She allowed five hits while striking out seven Stillman Valley and North Boone finished Big Northern Conference play with 15-1 records. Stillman Valley's win against North Boone tightens up Big Northern Conference softball race
DAVIS JUNCTION, Ill. — The race for the Big Northern Conference softball championship couldn't be much tighter than it is right now. North Boone at 11-1 has a slight edge over 10-1 Stillman Valley after Stillman knocked off the Vikings Tuesday 12-2 in six innings North Boone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Vikings didn't score the rest of the game. Stillman pitcher Makenzie Shere was in control. She went all six innings allowing only the two runs. She didn't walk a batter, and she struck out seven. Stillman scored one run in the first inning and then took command with a four-run bottom of the second. The big blow was a two-run home run over the left field fence by catcher Mylee Hulstedt. The Cardinals broke the game open by scoring five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 0-2 lead. Abby Gilliam had a big two-run double that inning. Aubrey Adler had a big day at the plate for Stillman going 4-4 with two RBIs. Third baseman Aurora Lagerhausen had three hits, and she drove in a run. Shortstop Sydney Musial added a pair of hits, and she drove in three runs from the leadoff spot in the lineup. These two teams have now split their two games. ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Guilford clinched its third straight outright NIC-10 championship. Pecatonica clinched at least a share of its fourth straight NUIC North Championship, and Rockford Christian suffered its first loss in Big Northern Conference play. Those were just some of the big storylines in high school basketball Friday it all right here with 'Overtime.' Christian Cummings plays through pain; Rockford Christian wins at Byron
BYRON, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — It was a good night and a scary night for Rockford Christian's basketball team and their fans. The Royal Lions won a key Big Northern Conference game at Byron, but they also saw one of their star players go down with an guard Christian Cummings went down hard on a collision under the basket while driving to the hoop. He landed hard on his right hand, and he was in extreme pain. After a delay of a couple minutes Cummings walked off the court, and he was tended to by a the time of the injury, Cummings had 22 points and Rockford Christian led by eight with 4:51 remaining in the game. Cummings returned a couple minutes later. Flexing his right hand, he not only played through the pain, he scored another basket on a driving layup. He then assisted on a game-clinching basket by Chase told me after that game how his hand was feeling. 'Yeah, I'm in pain, but it comes down to it we finished through it. I mean, it's, it's hurting me right now, but we've battled through.' With the Royal Lions battling for a Big Northern Conference championship and a high seed in postseason play, Cummings told me he just had to return to the game. 'Man, it means a lot, man. Going into regionals, the seeding and everything, we want to be here. We wanted to have the top seed going into the regional. So, it means a lot. Just coming back in, I just want to be a motivation to my team that no matter what I'm about through, we all get better through this together.'Rockford Christian won 59-48 to improve to 23-2 overall and 7-0 in the Big Northern Conference. That clinches at least a tie for the Big Northern Championship for the Royal Lions because they have a two game lead with only two conference games remaining.
