18-year-old charged with attempted murder of 71-year-old family member after biting sheriff's deputy

BIG ROCK TOWNSHIP, Ill. (WGN) — An 18-year-old man was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery of a peace officer after he allegedly bit a sheriff's deputy and physically beat an elderly family member, according to a press release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). Koda Uebel, an 18-year-old man from Waterman, was charged with six felony counts and four misdeamonors counts, which included: Attempted first-degree murder (Class M felony) Aggravated domestic battery (Class 2 felony) Aggravated domestic battery – strangulation (Class 2 felony) Aggravated battery – cause great bodily harm to person 60 years or older (Class 2 felony) Two counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer (Class 2 felony) Domestic battery – physical contact (Class A misdemeanor) Domestic battery – bodily harm (Class A misdemeanor) Resisting a peace officer (Class A misdemeanor) Possession/consumption of alcohol by a minor (Class A misdemeanor) Deputies said they were called to the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue in Big Rock Township around 12:05 a.m. early Saturday morning involving a domestic disturbance between two family members. When deputies arrived, they said they saw a male subject, later identified as Uebel, actively punching, slapping and kicking a female. After deputies said they heard Uebel threaten to kill the victim, they forced entry into the residence. As deputies intervened, they said Uebel attacked the deputies. According to the KCSO, deputies used a stun gun on Uebel to try and get him under control, but he remained combative and bit one of the deputies during the arrest before being restrained and taken into custody. The victim, later identified as 71-year-old Deborah Uebel, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital with serious injuries, where she remains hospitalized in stable condition. The injured deputy and Uebel were also taken to Delnor Hospital and released later the same day. Uebel was released back into KCSO custody after being medically cleared. Uebel's next scheduled court date is Thursday morning for a pretrial release or detention hearing. No other information is available at this time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
