Is Turkey's Tourism Getting Too Expensive? Man Shocked By McDonald's Meal Price At Antalya Airport

Turkey is known for its beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and bustling cities. However, one issue has been leaving many travellers shocked - the rising cost of everyday goods. A recent revelation has sparked a flurry of online discussion, with one man's experience at a McDonald's in Antalya Airport highlighting just how steep prices have become for visitors. Craig, a British citizen who recently passed through the busy airport, shared a TikTok video that quickly went viral, as viewers struggled to comprehend the eye-watering cost of fast food at the terminal. The price of a simple McDonald's meal in one of Turkey's most popular airports left many in disbelief. In the video, Craig said that after wandering through the airport, he found himself scanning the McDonald's menu, expecting typical fast-food prices. Instead, he was met with what he described as "mad" prices. The cost of a Big Mac Meal? A staggering $20.90 - which converts to around Rs 2,000. Even a Double Cheeseburger Meal came in at an eye-popping $20.50 (around Rs 1,964). And for those craving something even more indulgent, a Big Tasty Classic Meal would set them back $21.90 (around Rs 2,100). Craig's video quickly gained traction, with many fast-food fans expressing their shock in the comments. The footage has now been viewed by thousands, and it's not just the prices that have raised eyebrows - it's the fact that such rates are being charged at a popular tourist destination. One user said that Antalya and Istanbul airports were among the most expensive in the world. Another traveller, who had just returned from Turkey, mentioned that they refused to pay the high prices at the airport and instead stopped at a McDonald's on their way home. Many other commenters shared their disbelief, questioning why anyone would pay such inflated rates. So, why are places like Antalya Airport becoming so costly? According to economic data, Turkey's inflation has played a key role. A report by Statista states that in November 2024, Turkey's inflation rate stood at 47.1%. The highest recorded inflation during the period was 85.51% in October 2022. By June 2023, the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) had dropped to 38.21%, marking the lowest figure since January 2022. Since the second half of 2019, Turkey has experienced double-digit inflation, with the steepest rise occurring in 2022. The report also noted that domestic prices have been rising steadily, with the CPI - particularly in the food sector - seeing drastic increases since 2022. As Statista further explained, inflation has hit food prices especially hard, with an increase of 48.6% in the 12 months leading to November 2024. For travellers planning a trip to Turkey, it's important to be aware of the changing economic landscape. While the country offers many incredible experiences, it's clear that the cost of living - especially in popular tourist hubs like airports - has risen significantly in recent years. So, when planning your next trip to Turkey, it might be wise to pack a few extra snacks for the journey - or consider grabbing a bite outside the airport - to avoid these high-stakes fast-food prices.

Man left floored by price of McDonald's meal at popular airport

A man has shared how much it costs to buy a meal at McDonald's in a popular airport and people are gobsmacked at the price. People can't get over how much it is A bloke has left Brits utterly flabbergasted after revealing the eye-watering cost of a McDonald's meal at a well-known airport. Craig took to TikTok to show his followers the hefty price tag of grabbing a bite at Antalya Airport in Turkey, and viewers are absolutely staggered. In his revealing video, he explained that while at Antalya Airport, he was looking at what was on offer at the eatery. But, as he perused the menu, the prices struck him as "mad", prompting him to share the cost of some fan-favourite meals at this location. ‌ The footage shows a Big Mac Meal ringing in at a whopping €20,90 – that's about £16. And, if you're hankering for a Big Tasty Classic Meal, be prepared to fork out even more, with a price tag of €21,90. ‌ Even a Double Cheeseburger Meal isn't spared, costing an eye-popping €20,50. Since Craig posted the video, it's been viewed thousands of times, leaving customers gobsmacked by the exorbitant prices. The clip has racked up thousands of views, sparking a frenzy of comments from shocked fast- food lovers. One person questioned: "Antalya and Istanbul Airports are the most expensive airports in the world. Tell me the reason why?" Another shared their recent experience: "Literally just got home from Turkey a couple of hours ago, refused to pay at the airport, so now have a McDonald's en route to the house." A third chimed in with disbelief, writing: "Why do people pay those ridiculous prices?" And, yet another commenter echoed the sentiment, saying: "Antalya prices are a massive rip-off." Some commentators noted that prices in Turkey have been on the rise for some time, while others argued that not all areas of Turkey are pricey to visit. Additionally, a few people expressed puzzlement over why tourists opt to pay the steep prices. ‌ Why has Turkey become so expensive? According to Statista, there are several factors at play. The website states: "Domestic producer price indices have been continuously rising, which has directly resulted in a price increase in all consumer goods and services. Accordingly, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in all commodity groups increased extremely since 2022. "In the same year, the food and non-alcoholic beverages category had one of the highest inflation rates in the CPI. This particularly affected Turkish consumers, as these products accounted for the highest share of household expenditure in 2023. "Since 2020, food prices have increased significantly around the world, and Turkey is no exception. Although inflation has started to slow down recently, food prices in Turkey continue to go up steadily, increasing by 48.6 percent in November 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year. "It is not surprising that food inflation has not simmered down, as the producer price index (PPI) of agricultural products followed a constant increasing trend in the country over the past few years." However, it's reported that Turkey is making strides to bolster tourism, including tackling rising costs, diversifying tourist attractions and pumping money into infrastructure. The Government is reportedly striving to curb inflation, with some individuals also pushing niche tourism sectors like spas and health care.

Hey @McDonalds Since it's the season of good will to all men, can you please consider bringing the Big Tasty stateside? I've never ever seen it over here since living in NY… and I miss it dearly from back home in the UK. I think it's a smart move to run it as a trial. 😏 — Nick - 𝕏  🛸 (@nickyducky) November 29, 2024 In fifth place is the Big Breakfast, which receives 3,583 monthly searches as fans continue to call for its return after being discontinued in 2016. First introduced in the 1990s, the meal featured a hash brown, scrambled egg, sausage patty, and a toasted muffin, containing just over 1,000 calories. While it remains unavailable in the UK, it can still be found on US menus, with online petitions pushing for its comeback. Other menu items missed by customers include: Steakhouse Stack Chicken Legend Skittles McFlurry Chilli Cheese Bites Breakfast Bagel Halloumi Fries Kit Kat McFlurry Creme Egg McFlurry Toffee Sundae McArabia Recommended reading: Discontinued chocolates still available in UK stores Cadbury issues update on return of Spira chocolate bar The cheapest supermarket for pancake ingredients may come as a surprise Max Dahlquist from Plejmo said of the research: "Since opening its first UK restaurant in the 1970s, McDonald's has offered a variety of limited-edition items, from fan favourites like the Chicken Fajita wrap, Galaxy McFlurry, and McRib to more unique choices such as the forgotten Onion Nuggets. 'Despite being discontinued, many of these items still spark significant online search interest years after their removal. This continued demand highlights the emotional connection people have with these nostalgic foods. "It also shows the power of consumer desire, proving that with the right touch, McDonald's can bring these beloved items back and reignite excitement.'
