2025 NBA Draft scouting report: Payton Sandfort, F, Iowa

Payton Sandfort #20 of the Iowa Hawkeyes brings the ball up court during the game against the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Second Round at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on March 13, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by) For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my NBA Draft Guide. Payton Sandfort, F, Iowa Height: 6-8 • Weight: 215 • Class: Senior • Age: 22 Summary: Sandfort is a beautiful shooter off the catch capable of knocking down shots from anywhere. Even though his numbers dipped as a senior at Iowa, he played through a fractured wrist and torn labrums on both of his shoulders! But when he's healthy, he could provide a spark as a member of the Clippers bench. Advertisement Comparisons: Sam Hauser Strengths Shooting: Elite spot-up shooter who relocates into open space and hits from deep with quick, confident mechanics. Defenses can't lose track of him. He's also capable of hitting side-step jumpers and midrange pull-ups with a smooth release. Passing: Never plays outside of himself as a good decision-maker with the ball in his hands. But with a growing role each season, he showed he's more than just a basic decision-maker with his feel for passing to open teammates off of drives. Effort: Brings consistent intensity on defense and rebounds well for his position. Concerns Shot creation: Not a primary creator and can struggle generating clean looks against length. Advertisement Defense: He has limitations defending in space and doesn't change direction too well. He could be hunted in switches at the next level. For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my NBA Draft Guide.

Purdue basketball gets rival Indiana twice. How does rest of Big Ten schedule shake out?

WEST LAFAYETTE ― Purdue basketball's quest for a third Big Ten regular season title in four years now has its path. On paper, the Boilermakers' 20-game league schedule for 2025-26 appears to be favorable. Advertisement Purdue faces rival Indiana, as well as Iowa and Wisconsin twice each, once on the road and once at Mackey Arena. Other Purdue Big Ten home games: Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oregon, Penn State and Washington. Other Purdue Big Ten road games: Maryland, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers, UCLA and USC. Purdue's west coast trip, after traveling to Washington and Oregon last season, will be the double dip in Los Angeles, marking its first appearance at USC's Galen Center and its first game at Pauley Pavilion since 1999 when former Purdue coach Gene Keady faced former Boilermaker assistant Steve Lavin. Advertisement More: Oscar Cluff was destined to be a boilermaker. His world tour found Purdue's 'basketball heaven' The dates and times for Purdue's Big Ten contests will be finalized at a later date. Purdue is expected to be one of the favorites to win the conference, returning Big Ten Player of the Year Braden Smith along with seniors Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn, a first-team all-Big Ten selection in 2025. Purdue also returns pivotal pieces Gicarri Harris and CJ Cox and gets center Daniel Jacobsen back from a fractured tibia suffered last season. The Boilermakers also add incoming freshmen Omer Mayer and Antione West to package with transfers Oscar Cluff and Liam Murphy. Old News: COVID closes everything

On this day five years ago, Marion County residents got their first dose of the gathering restrictions, school closures and major event cancellations that would define their lives for years to come. Why it matters: Half a decade later, Hoosiers are still feeling the effects of the pandemic, and life has yet to completely return to the way it was prior to March 2020. Driving the (old) news: By March 12, 2020, the state's count of confirmed COVID-19 cases had climbed to 12 and, before the day was out, we'd see the first dominos fall in a cascade of decisions that would quickly and dramatically change how we lived. Just after midnight, newly-elected House Speaker Todd Huston told reporters that lawmakers were watching their phones throughout the previous day as the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The House adjourned for the 2020 session just as the clocks switched to March 12 and Huston said "I think we just have to see what happens." He also told reporters he had "total confidence" in then-Gov. Eric Holcomb and that he trusted him to make the right decision about limiting public gatherings — something other states had started doing but Indiana had yet to do at the time. Holcomb issued a directive to limit non-essential gatherings to no more than 250 people later that day. Just like this year, Indy was hosting the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament. Rutgers and Michigan were pulled from the floor during pregame warm-ups for the second day of play. About 15 minutes before their noon tip-off, the conference announced the remainder of the tournament was canceled. Zoom out: That same day, the NCAA confirmed that the Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments had been canceled. Following Holcomb's afternoon announcement restricting gatherings, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett held an evening press conference, announcing city employees would begin working remotely, suspending all senior Parks Department programming, and granting IMPD the permission to issue summonses instead of arrests for nonviolent misdemeanors. Local hospitals and nursing facilities began restricting visitors to immediate family members over the age of 18. Hogsett also announced that all of Marion County's public and private schools would close from March 16 to April 5. They didn't reopen until the following school year.

A basketball fan's guide to Indianapolis

Welcome to Indy, basketball fans! Driving the news: Indianapolis is hosting the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament Wednesday through Sunday. We're an easy drive, a relatively affordable place to visit and single-game ticket prices start at $40. Come on down! Why it matters: In 49 other states it's just basketball, but this is Indiana. We take the sport and our hosting duties very seriously. Here's your guide to having a great time in the Circle City. The big picture: All the games are being played at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers in the heart of downtown Indy. Games start at 3:30pm Wednesday and continue throughout the week until the final at 3:30pm Sunday. 🏨 Where to stay: Downtown is built around hosting big events, so there are plenty of hotels. Some are already sold out, but here are three with good vibes and, at our last check, still had rooms available during the tournament. The Residence Inn by Marriott on the Canal puts you directly on one of our favorite walking paths in town (see more below), connecting you to a state park, museums and more. At the Crowne Plaza Hotel inside Union Station, not only will you be just three blocks from the action — you can stay inside an old train car. Bottleworks is just outside the downtown core, but this newly restored art deco gem anchoring a bustling entertainment district is worth the quick Uber trip or longer walk. 🥞 Pregame: Fuel up with a solid brunch. Cafe Patachou at the Stutz will take you to one of the hippest little redevelopments, an old factory reborn into artist studios and shops — including another location of the city's favorite breakfast spot. Don't skip the cinnamon toast! Tupelo Honey is an import from Asheville, North Carolina. The biscuits don't miss and it's just two blocks from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. If you don't mind a wait, try your luck at Milktooth. There's a reason it's on every list of the best places to eat in Indianapolis. 🚶 Walk it off: After sitting through a game or two, stretch your legs with a stroll around our exceedingly walkable downtown. From Gainbridge Fieldhouse, you're only a mile from White River State Park and its walking trails along the eponymous river. The park also connects to the downtown canal walk, one of our favorite walking paths in the city — a unique manmade canal flanked with museums, pocket parks and apartments. Gainbridge is also just a few steps off the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which will connect you in just half a mile to the Fletcher Place neighborhood with its bars and restaurants. 🥩 Postgame: You could eat at one of the dozen steakhouses downtown… or you could check out a few of the neighborhoods surrounding downtown to get a feel for the city, the way we locals live it. Fountain Square is just a mile southeast of the fieldhouse and has tons of funky cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. Hit up Upland for our favorite local beer and great food, then stop by the Inferno Room, an over-the-top tiki bar, on your way back downtown for a nightcap. Mass Ave is a whole vibe, a mile-long stretch of road that starts just a half-mile north of the fieldhouse and ends at the Bottleworks entertainment district. Put your name on the waitlist for dinner at Bodhi, the best Thai food in town, and peruse the shelves of nearby Tomorrow Bookstore while you wait. Diehard basketball fans will want to make the trek a few miles north to Butler University. Walk around the picturesque campus, see historic Hinkle Fieldhouse — where one of the greatest basketball movies ever made was filmed — and then scoot on up the road for a hot slice of Byrne's Grilled Pizza. Pro tip: Skip Circle Centre Mall. I know — it's right there. But it's about to get a major makeover and there are only a handful of stores left inside, hanging on for dear life.
