Nebraska advances to Big Ten Championship game following wins over Oregon and Penn State
Nebraska advances to Big Ten Championship game following wins over Oregon and Penn State The Nebraska baseball team (31-27) entered an unexpected doubleheader in the Big Ten Tournament, facing No. 4 Oregon (42-14) and Penn State (33-23) on Saturday. The Huskers defeated both teams to advance to the Big Ten Championship game for the second year in a row. Nebraska started the day with the Ducks in the final game of Pool A, after being rescheduled due to weather. The Huskers upset top-seed Oregon 7-3, following a strong offensive start. Nebraska scored in four of the first five innings of the game to take a 6-1 lead over the Ducks. The Huskers chalked up one more run in the eighth and managed to survive Oregon's comeback attempts. The Ducks got the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, looking to cut Nebraska's lead to two. But the Huskers stood their ground and left all three runners on base to retire the side. Oregon scored two runs in the ninth, but Nebraska's defense and its lead prevented a potential collapse, allowing for the upset win. The Huskers also survived a potential comeback attempt from Penn State later in the afternoon in the Big Ten semifinals. Nebraska jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the Nittany Lions after entering the bottom of the fourth down 3-2. Penn State got its tying runner at the plate in the ninth with two outs. But the Huskers secured the final out at the warning track to punch their ticket to the championship game. Riley Silva finished 4-for-9 with two RBIs on the day. Cayden Brumbaugh also hit 4-for-9 in the doubleheader, earning one RBI. Gabe Swansen struck 3-for-8 on the day, delivering two home runs, one in each game, to rack up four RBIs. Hogan Helligso hit 3-for-7 with three RBIs. Case Sanderson and Robby Bolin each finished 2-for-7 on the day, with Sanderson earning two RBIs and Bolin snatching one. Jackson Brockett (4-3) started against the Ducks and took the win. The southpaw held Oregon to just one run on six hits across six innings, striking out four batters and allowing two walks. Will Walsh earned the save after pitching the final three innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Drew Christo (3-2) grabbed the win against Penn State at the mound, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing three hits against three strikeouts. Tucker Timmerman started at pitcher for Nebraska, tossing two strikeouts and surrendering four hits and three runs. Luke Broderick earned his 12th save after pitching the final 2.2 innings, punching out three batters while coughing up three walks and two hits. Big Ten Network announces Iowa baseball vs. Oregon broadcast plan
Big Ten Network announces Iowa baseball vs. Oregon broadcast plan As the chase for the Big Ten baseball regular season crown becomes clearer with two weeks remaining, the Big Ten Network has announced its broadcast plans for next week's series between the first-place Iowa Hawkeyes (32-15, 21-6) and the No. 7-ranked Oregon Ducks (35-13, 18-8). While Iowa has a non-conference three-game series vs. No. 11-ranked Oregon State (34-12) this weekend from Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa, the Hawkeyes will enter the final homestand of the regular season vs. the Ducks with at least a one game lead atop the conference standings (currently lead the Big Ten with a 2 1/2 advantage). According to the Big Ten Network, it plans to broadcast the final two games of the series from Duane Banks Field on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. Game 2 is scheduled to start at 6:02 p.m. CT, while Game 3 is set to begin at 12:02 p.m. CT. As for Thursday's series opener, that will air on FS1 with a start time set for 6:02 p.m. CT. All three games will also be available via radio on the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans. Watch Iowa baseball vs. Oregon Due to the somewhat complex nature of all of the Hawkeyes' clinching scenarios, the easiest path to a regular-season title is by winning at least two of three against Oregon. If the Hawkeyes were to win their first regular-season title since 1990, Iowa would have a more straightforward path to the Big Ten Tournament title as the top seed out of the 12 qualifying programs. The winner of the Big Ten Tournament, which takes place at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., from May 20-25, receives the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Dan Lanning-coached team finished the season in the top 20 in both scoring offense and scoring defense. Heading into the offseason, Oregon will need to find its next quarterback. Dillon Gabriel had a strong season in Eugene but is off for the NFL now, leaving Dante Moore as the favorite to take over under center. The former UCLA passer brings several things to the table. Florida State transfer Malik Benson will look to impress in the receiving corps as the team tries to replace Tez Johnson. Will this new-look Oregon passing attack be able to replicate the recent success under Gabriel and, before him, Bo Nix? Tune in to the Big Ten Network on Saturday for the Oregon Spring Game.
