Organiser of A.R. Rahman 2023 Marakuma Nenjam concert ordered to pay ₹50,000 compensation by Chennai consumer court
The Chennai North District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered ACTC Events to pay ₹50,000 as compensation for the mismanagement of A.R. Rahman's Marakkuma Nenjam concert held in the capital city in September 2023. In his petition filed by K.R. Arjun, he claimed that ACTC Events, Big Tree Entertainment and Mr. Rahman adopted negligent and unfair practices for the event, which was originally to be held on August 12, 2023, but was later postponed to September 10, 2023. He alleged that the event management company had failed miserably in organising the event, causing hardships to customers. He had also purchased a 'diamond category' ticket, which guaranteed a parking space at the venue. However, this wasn't the case and, hence, he had to miss the event. However, ACTC Events contended that adverse weather conditions and unprecedented rainfall had caused damage to the venue and equipment. Taking weather reports into consideration, it had cancelled the event. Further, the cancellation of the concert was communicated to all the ticket buyers and information was posted on social media, the company stated. In its order, the Commission president D. Gopinath and members Kavitha Kannan and V. Ramamurthy said since the event was organised on a large scale by giving wide publicity, it was the duty of the event management company to provide or inform the participants much earlier to avoid unnecessary hardship and suffering and also overcrowding resulting in stampede. 'Thus, we hold that there is clear negligence on the event management company for cancelling the scheduled event on August 12 citing weather conditions at the last minute, causing monetary loss, serious mental hardships, and suffering for people…,' the order said. The commission directed ACTC Events to pay ₹50,000 as compensation to the complainant for mismanagement and mental agony and another ₹5,000 for litigation cost within two months. The complaint against Big Tree Entertainment and Mr. Rahman was dismissed as the forum did not find merit in the complaint against them as they are formal parties.
