‘Bows late push falls short against UC Irvine in Big West Conference Tournament

Hawaii baseball took to the diamond on Thursday against 1st seed UC Irvine in the 1st round of the double elimination bracket for the Big West Conference Tournament. The Rainbow Warriors came into the day 0-3 against UC Irvine on the season but trying to flip the script on Thursday. But the Anteaters started the game off on the right note as the 'Bows allowed 3 runs in the 1st inning. Hawaii in the 2nd inning added 2 runs from 2 RBI hits. But in the bottom of the inning, UCI scored another 3 to take a 6-2 lead. From the 3rd through the 6th inning, neither team managed to score a run as it was a defensive showing as UH held the Anteaters hitless through that stretch. In the top of the 7th with 2 runners on, Hawaii's Ben Zeigler-Namoa delivered. Zeigler-Namoa crushed a ball to centerfield for a 3 run homerun to pull the 'Bows within just 1 run. Hawaii allowed a run in the bottom of the 8th inning, and was unable to make it up. The 'Bows fall to UC Irvine 7 to 5. The Rainbow Warriors finish with 11 hits at the plate. But the 'Bows on the mound allow 7 hits. Hawaii heads to the elimination side of the bracket and will play on Friday at 4:00pm HT to keep their season alive. The Tritons moved up from Division II to join the conference in 2020 and won the regular season championship with 18 wins in 20 conference games. They have now won 15 straight and take a 30-4 record into the Big Dance in their first full year of Division I eligibility.

The Tritons moved up from Division II to join the conference in 2020 and won the regular season championship with 18 wins in 20 conference games. They have now won 15 straight and take a 30-4 record into the Big Dance in their first full year of Division I eligibility. UC Irvine took a 33-31 lead at intermission, but the Tritons took the lead in the third minute of the second half on a jumper by Tyler McGhie to start an 8-0 run for a seven-point advantage, 43-36. The Anteaters got within four, 58-54 with 4:26 left but Nordin Kapic and McGhie hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 9-0 run capped by Gray's driving layup for a 67-54 lead with 1:46 left. Gray finished 8 of 10 from the field to lead the Tritons with 22 points. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. McGhie had 11 points and Kapic 10. UC San Diego was 12 of 29 from beyond the 3-point arc and was 27 of 55 from the field (49.1%). Justin Hohn led UC Irvine (28-6) with 18 points. (AP) — Gracie Gallegos scored 24 points to spark fourth-seeded UC San Diego to a 75-66 win over third-seeded UC Davis to win the Big West Conference Tournament championship on Saturday. Playing in their first Division I postseason, the Tritons won their third straight tournament game to claim their first tournament title. UC San Diego knocked off Cal Poly in the quarterfinals and edged top-seeded Hawaii when Sumayah Sugapong hit a layup with 0.2 left for a 51-49 win. Gallegos opened the game with a three-point play and her free throw with 4:17 left in the first quarter gave the Tritons a 9-0 lead to start the game en route to a 16-9 lead heading into the second. UC San Diego (20-15) held a 34-21 lead at intermission. Gallegos was 6 of 12 from the field and converted 12 of 14 at the free-throw line to lead the Tritons, pulling down seven rebounds, dishing three assists with a steal and a blocked shot. Sabrina Ma added 15 points and pulled down six rebounds. Sugapong added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Erin Condron added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Ryann Bennett and Tova Sabel each scored 13 points to lead the Aggies (21-12).
