The initiative is taking place on social media platforms, inviting citizens, entities, and tourist attractions to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances and light candles for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 22, 2025. This aims to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive energy consumption and its negative impact on the planet, including its role in climate change and global warming. It also aims to encourage positive behaviors aimed at preserving the environment and planet to ensure a sustainable future. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, pointed out that the increasing impacts of climate change on various regions and countries, regardless of whether they are developed or developing. These impacts are clearly evident in extreme weather events, floods, and fires, as well as the impact on biodiversity and land degradation, necessitate a different approach this year to participate in Earth Hour. The goal is to achieve the largest global participation in Earth Hour, reflecting increased awareness and a desire to participate positively in addressing environmental challenges. This is especially true after Earth Hour last year saw the participation of more than 180 countries and regions worldwide, with a total of 1.4 million hours of active participation. This is followed by more than 410,000 hours in 2023. The world is therefore striving to achieve a new milestone by 2025. The global initiative "Earth Hour" was launched in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has rapidly grown to become the world's largest grassroots environmental movement, inspiring individuals, communities, companies, and organizations in more than 188 countries and territories to take concrete action to address the impacts of climate change. Participation in Earth Hour is one of the mechanisms for integrating individuals into the movement. Combating climate change and harnessing the collective power of millions of people around the world to highlight the climate issue. Earth Hour is the oldest form of awareness-raising and the oldest global environmental event. The reason for choosing the date of the event is that it falls on the last Saturday of March each year, close to the vernal equinox, when day and night are of equal length. This is to ensure that most cities around the world participate at a similar time of day, as Earth Hour moves across time zones.
