28 heritage trees identified in 5 dists for preservation

Patna: Bihar State Biodiversity Board, under the department of environment, forest and climate change has identified 28 heritage trees over 100 years old in five districts – Buxar, Aurangabad, Munger, Jamui and Bhagalpur. Of the total 32 trees selected, 28 are over a century old while four are between 70 and 90 years old. The oldest among them, estimated to be around 500 years old, is a banyan tree located in southern Umga panchayat of Madanpur block in Aurangabad district. These trees were identified as part of a major initiative by the board to preserve the state's natural heritage by recognising and protecting trees of significant age and ecological value. The board has recently developed and circulated detailed guidelines for the identification of heritage trees, which were sent to district magistrates and forest division officers across Bihar, according to a statement issued by the department on Monday. Banyan trees account for the largest share (12), followed by peepal (6), pakad (3), mahua (2), neem (2), semal (2) and one each of khirni, gular, tamarind, kalpavriksha and kanak champa. The initiative is seen as a tribute to Bihar's rich biological heritage. Rashmi Kumar, member secretary of the Bihar State Biodiversity Board, said, "Initially, around 1,500 trees were identified across the state. After physical verification and assessment, 32 trees were finally selected for the 'Biodiversity Heritage Tree' designation." The board has also implemented protective measures for these heritage trees, including regular monitoring and maintenance protocols.
