Dublin trike enthusiast spearheads charity bike run for kids with rare condition

A Dublin trike lover is spearheading a massive bike and trike run to rally funds for Debra, the charity aiding those affected by a rare skin condition.
Over 100 two and three-wheeled enthusiasts will cruise through Wicklow on June 29, in an effort to bolster support for the 300 individuals in Ireland battling epidermolysis bullosa (EB), inviting friends to join in. EB is a genetic disorder characterised by the lack of connecting proteins between skin layers, causing severe blistering from the slightest friction.
Those with serious cases of EB have to undergo agonising daily bandaging to manage their blistered skin. Teaming up for this charitable cause are Bikers 4 St Catherine's Special School in Newtownmountkennedy and Irish Trikes, with backing from the military biker club Green Knights Ireland.
Clondalkin man Sean Meyler from Irish Trikes is a co-organiser of the event. He said: "On our runs, we go off for a spin before heading to a venue to show the bikes and trikes to children and adults and make an event of it. Personally, I have encountered a few children with EB and it always struck a chord with me."
The local enthusiast added: "It just leapt out that maybe there was something we as a biking/triking community of Ireland could do. We are very heavily involved in supporting charities, we go for a spin and we turn up for people in need. We're not looking for medals, if we can do something to highlight a charity in need, we'll do it."
The run is perfect for both learner riders and families, starting from Circle K in Citywest, Dublin at 10am sharp on June 29. It's then heads heads south towards Blessington and Hollywood, before rolling into Laragh with a pit stop at Lynhams.
The journey revs on to Rathdrum, Glenealy and Rathnew, eventually cruising towards Newcastle Community Centre. At this juncture, it's all about going the extra mile for Debra, promising participants prizes, raffles, grub, and the king of rock 'n' roll himself through an Elvis tribute act.
"We're not political or religious," Mr Meyler, 61, said. "We're about watching out for each other and the community and we support other's charity runs."
