House Bill 111: Drivers could face extra $200 fine for speeding
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A new bill has been introduced at the Ohio Statehouse that would increase speeding fines for drivers in Ohio.
Ohio House Bill 111 aims to have drivers who travel at least 30 mph over the speed limit to face an extra fine described as an extra $200 more than the typical amount.
State Reps. Rodney Creech (R-West Alexandria) and Kevin Miller (R-Newark) are listed as the bill's primary sponsors.
If the bill becomes law, some accused drivers could have the fine waived, but only if they file in court before they are sentenced that they can't afford the extra fine and the court makes that determination.
'No court shall impose the additional fine specified in this division upon an offender if the offender alleges, in an affidavit filed with the court prior to the offender's sentencing, that the offender is indigent and unable to pay the fine imposed pursuant to this division and if the courtdetermines that the offender is an indigent person and unable to pay the fine,' said the bill.
Sean Brennan (D-Parma) is listed as the only state lawmaker from across the aisle to cosponsor the bill.
The bill is currently in the Ohio House Public Safety Committee.
