Proposed SC bills could halt construction of Silfab Solar Plant in Fort Mill
FORT MILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Silfab Solar's $150 million plant in Fort Mill might hit a major roadblock. Two bills, House Bill 4293 and Senate Bill 530, are moving through the South Carolina legislature. If passed, they'd give local governments the power to stop construction if a project doesn't meet zoning rules, even after permits have been issued and work has started.
The Senate version could take effect immediately if signed by Gov. Henry McMaster.
The Silfab project has drawn pushback from residents concerned about its location near schools and potential environmental risks. Despite the company's promises about safety and compliance, many locals say they still have unanswered questions.
If the bills pass and the facility is found out of zoning compliance, construction could be halted until issues are resolved, possibly through rezoning, a variance, or the courts.
Officials and developers across the state are watching closely, as the outcome could reshape how zoning laws are enforced in South Carolina.
