Tickets available for annual memorial fund BBQ
(WKBN) — Tickets are still available for the annual Strimbu Memorial Fund Barbeque.
Crews were working to set up tents outside Yankee Lake Ballroom for Wednesday's Texas-style BBQ. Organizers expect about 900 people to attend.
It's the 36th year for the event, which typically raises at least $175,000 for the Memorial Fund.
The fund has given about $5 million back to the community in 'hand-ups' since its inception.
'We're really into educational things,' said Bill Strimbus, with the Fund. 'We give a lot of scholarships away and we've gotten into a lot of vocational training in the last few years. We also build wheelchair ramps for the elderly. We give to a lot of agencies that help people.'
Tickets for the event are $175 each and can be purchased at the Nick Strimbu trucking company in Brookfield.
'Our Community Foundation exists so that we can connect donors with the impact they want to have in the community,' said Kyle English. 'This is one arm of it, the Strimbu Memorial Fund, and the annual BBQ, but what they turn around and do with the money is where the real impact happens.'
